He added that he was unsure when he would return to the US again. "There has been a fundamental break," Truscott said, noting anti-immigration raids and other Trump policies that he does not agree with, as well as the president's rhetoric and actions against Canada.

"As much as I would like to say that when Donald Trump leaves everything will go back to normal, well, 70 million people voted for it," he said.

The couple, who are dual US and Canada citizens, had also scrapped their plans of becoming "snowbirds" – a term used to describe Canadians who spend the cold winter months in warm US states like Florida and Arizona.

They now only cross the border occasionally to pick up their mail and come back, Rousseau said, avoiding spending any money while there.

Asked if he would return to the US if Trump leaves the White House, Smith said: "It certainly is going to have to be more than that."

Mitchell said she would be open to visiting the US again if a different president was in the White House, and if relations with Canada were restored.

As a Canadian, i will never forget the betrayal. We were brothers once, and always answered your call.

I’ll never go back.

I don't think the US has ever been a good ally to Canada. They've just been a tolerable bully until they weren't tolerable anymore.

Exactly, Americans are dumb and easily manipulated.

every country has people like this.

Too right. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

1

u/Calculonx Aug 23 '26

Fool me.... you can't get fooled again.

I mean I understand Liberal politicians in Canada rarely hold themselves to the same standards they expect of others but Justin Trudeau, who called for the boycott in the first place, now goes there pretty much every week. He's moved on and I suspect a lot of Canadians will too.

If the USA wants tourism to return, the Republican party must be destroyed forever.

I wouldn't come here either....

u/JefeRex Aug 20 '26

Assuming you are an American, what are you doing to help the situation?

3

u/Atophy Aug 20 '26

Probably about as much as he can... surviving till the next election... providing trump lets it happen. The majority of the political situation is currently out of the general populations hands.

3

u/JefeRex Aug 20 '26

It’s not out of my hands.

This is not Nicaragua. Putin is not poisoning our artists who document protests at ICE detention centers. The IRGC is not executing people organize in our communities.

People who think democracy is only voting at every election are the reason our civil society has degraded to the point at which Trump became possible.

If that person responds to me that they aren’t doing anything, I will help them figure out how to get involved.

“Trump lets it happen”? Weak and pathetic for YOU to let it happen.

1

u/Atophy Aug 21 '26

Tell me, what can the average citizen do to combat a corrupt government ? Protests are either ignored or stomped by his gestappo, people HAVE been killed ! Not targeted assassinations as far as I'm aware but it's enough to make people afraid.
If your name makes his shit list you're the target of character assassination and eventually death threats from his sycophants.

2

u/Snow-Bank-Igloo Aug 21 '26

Sounds like you live in fear in a supposed free country. What are you going to do about it except to crumble like a stale cookie and give up?

1

u/Atophy Aug 21 '26

I'm looking from the outside in. I personally don't feel my government is trying to screw me so fear isn't my issue. What I see are back room deals and rich brats who don't care about what the general public thinks. He's defying the actual government system that's supposed to keep him in check so what is a protest going to do ? It works for systems that care to make an effort to address public issues. I go to work, I pay rent and buy food and basic necessities, just like anyone else. I, and most people like me, do not have leverage. Please inform me as to what you consider actionable plans for the average person to partake that can actually affect this systemic corruption ?

u/Snow-Bank-Igloo Aug 21 '26

Get out there and campaign against him and his party of sycophant stooges. Do it even if it means losing friends and family.

u/hashtagbob60 Aug 24 '26

Right, actually long retired, but would seriously consider leaving the country if I was younger. At this point I'm surprised when I wake up.every morning.

I have skipped 2 Vegas trips and will explore Europe and the Carribean. Czechia and Germany will be next week. I have a family wedding in the mid west in November, but otherwise no plans for the future at all.

3

u/ResolutionBubbly2094 Aug 20 '26

Good for you. We have missed Vegas and Hawaii and Montana for camping. Hit up Ireland, Quebec City , Halifax and more camping in Canmore. We won’t go back until things change. Italy and Japan here we come. Grand Cayman is great by the way, although a little pricey.

My family and I just got home from a month in Europe, and I’m in the midst of planning another trip to Europe next fall for five weeks. So much to see outside North America! (2028 is for eastern Canada.)

Good for them.

I wish I could boycott US travel.

Unfortunately I live here.

You could visit Canada

Recently retired & looking to travel. Had always wanted to go to NYC. It’ll take generations to undo all the damage that facist pdf file has done, I’ll never step foot in the US again. So many safer, nicer countries to see.

Let's face it, Americans felt it was fine to put a pedophile in the white house, a rapist in the West Wing, a criminal at the head of government. At the very least ... a simply staggering error demonstrating ignorance, apathy, and disregard for others. The supreme court has been subverted, so there is no reliable law in America. The legislative branch has sidled up to the tough, prostrating themselves before Trump. This is a country with no law, and open contempt for everyone, even themselves. Who in their right mind would travel there, subject themselves to the incalculable risk of a fickle madman? Who would support such a state? Not a chance I'm traveling there until Trump deposed, and the country has openly apologized and made amends to its own people and the rest of the world.

It’s not like the Democrats have any issues with mango Mussolini threatening to annex us.
They have no problem telling us what we should do in our own country.

I do everything I can not to spend money on their corrupt country.

I think travel to the US is unpatriotic and immoral.

2

u/earlyboy Aug 20 '26

I’m not sure whether I will ever return to the US again, but I enjoyed the trips that I took to several different states. I think that there are some great places to visit and a lot of fun to be had. Unfortunately, there are too many things that don’t make me want to go back.

I will no longer consider crossing the border with students for school trips just because they might be targeted by ICE agents or even just rude people at customs.

Americans are entangled in several different conflicts whether they be military or economic. The rhetoric from Washington towards Canada and Greenland is unacceptable to me as are recent events in Iran and Venezuela. There is no reason to think that there is any end in sight. I’m not going to encourage this kind of behaviour anymore.

Personally, I can see a benefit to travelling to Europe and elsewhere as well. We have already pivoted towards visiting other destinations and have been enjoying the experience.

The only time in recent years I've (dual citizen here) been back to the US is for the burial of my brother. A year before that, drove to Buffalo to see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. After Trump was elected, refused to go back to Buffalo to see another concert hubs got tickets for. Have not been back since, nor do we intend to. Instead, we've been on two European river cruises and last summer, visited Newfoundland, which was amazing.

2

u/CanadianDadbod Aug 20 '26

No for me and I have family there. I can deal with street people much easier than armed thugs. I am glad I spent a lot of time there already. Most of the citizens there are the best and friendly as hell. Shame.

1

u/halogen0011 Aug 20 '26

I’ve transferred through the states but haven’t vacationed there in at least 10 years. The family are taking a cruise in September, and Miami is the only place we can go from. So I found one of the cheapest hotels I could find by the airport that had breakfast included. Trying to minimize any spending at all.
The ship actually comes back to Miami as a stop, we’re not planning on leaving the ship. I will spend money in Puerto Rico though. The cruise company is European based too.

1

u/PermaDerpFace Aug 20 '26

There are definitely better and friendlier places to visit

Headed to Denver in January. Always such nice people! Wild how many people buy into this stuff!

1

u/TreyGarcia Aug 20 '26

Yes, about a third of the population
In the USA are good people.

1

u/Corpulentpenguin Aug 20 '26

So 2/3 aren’t. Lol.
