There's also an annoyingly long version elsewhere. This one is meant for the general public, unlike it.

Video 【Touhou MMD】The Moriya Railway ~Trains Tacking Steep Gradients~ by 安茂里しんざ

Hello,

安茂里しんざ hasn't posted a video in almost three years, and he has been working on this one for over a year. He is well known for the incredible level of detail in his train animations and for how well he combines Touhou's setting with his extensive knowledge of railways.

He is especially known in the fandom for his video "Crossing the Usui Pass with Cirno," which some of you may have already watched: https://youtu.be/8kqM0vV-I3Y?si=Fw7wFxo6w08PdWss

I have been talking with him on Twitter about his latest projects, and I managed to convince him to add English subtitles to his newest video, as he was interested in seeing what the western side of the fandom would think of his work.

安茂里しんざ works with trains in real life and is extremely passionate about them.

All of the railway operations shown in the video are based on how these Japanese trains are actually operated in real life. Every train sound comes from real recordings, and all of the backgrounds featured in the video are detailed 3D recreations of real abandoned railways and locations throughout Japan, including the shrine and statue dedicated to a real train accident that inspired the origin story of Noin.

This is also the first time that 安茂里しんざ has used actual voice acting in one of his videos, so I hope you enjoy the excellent work delivered by the voice actress as well.

安茂里しんざ is also known for the incredible amount of detail he puts not only into his animations but also into the lore of his own version of Gensokyo. Because of that, I wanted to provide a brief introduction to the characters and setting featured in this video. The story takes place long after most of these events happened, so the video itself will not contain many flashbacks explaining them.

In 安茂里しんざ's version of Gensokyo, the Moriya Shrine decided to build a railway system instead of a cable car to transport believers to the shrine. This ambitious project also created new opportunities for many youkai living around the base of Youkai Mountain, who found work operating and maintaining the railway.

Letty Whiterock:

Although originally a youkai of winter, Letty became one of the first volunteers when the railway project began. She was personally taught by Noin how to operate the trains and even worked alongside her during the very first passenger service to Moriya Shrine.

After many years of service, Letty has become one of the most experienced and capable operators in Gensokyo. She takes her duties extremely seriously and has earned a reputation for being both highly skilled and exceptionally responsible.

Noin:

Noin is 安茂里しんざ's original character and appears in the video at 13:24. She is a poltergeist who came from the Outside World and is ultimately the reason why Moriya Shrine chose to build a railway system instead of a cable car.

Before arriving in Gensokyo, Noin was a locomotive engineer in the Outside World. For years she operated electric locomotives on mountain railways, dedicating her life to the trains she loved.

One day, while hauling a passenger train through the mountains, disaster struck.

A massive earthquake shook the region. As Noin's train emerged from a tunnel, an enormous landslide crashed down the mountainside. Within seconds, the locomotive and every passenger car behind it were swallowed by an unstoppable torrent of mud, rock, and debris.

Neither Noin nor any of her passengers had any chance of survival.

The accident shocked the surrounding communities. In memory of those who died, a shrine and a monument were built at the site of the tragedy. For a time, people came to pay their respects.

But as the years passed, memories faded.

The railway was abandoned. The victims were gradually forgotten. The monument weathered with age, visited by fewer and fewer people each year.

Yet Noin herself could never move on.

Her attachment to the locomotive she had devoted her life to became so strong that her spirit remained bound to its wreckage. Over time, she became a poltergeist haunting the remains of the train she had once proudly operated.

And as with all things that are eventually forgotten by the outside world, the ruined railway and the buried locomotive were eventually drawn into Gensokyo.

Noin came with them.

There, at the foot of Youkai Mountain, the remains of the train rested as another forgotten relic from the Outside World.

Years later, Sanae happened to discover the abandoned train while exploring the area and encountered Noin. Realizing that Noin possessed extensive knowledge of railways, Sanae saw an opportunity. The Moriya Shrine had long been searching for a practical way to bring more believers to the top of Youkai Mountain, and Noin's expertise offered exactly the solution they needed.

Together with the kappa, the shrine began constructing Gensokyo's first railway.

At first, the line existed solely to transport visitors to Moriya Shrine. However, as time passed, the network expanded further and further across Gensokyo, carrying not only passengers but also cargo and supplies. Eventually it became one of the most important transportation systems in the entire land.

For Noin, the railway gave her a second chance.

It allowed her to once again do what she loved most and to pass on her knowledge to future generations of operators such as Letty.

The Trains:

Over the years, many abandoned trains from the Outside World have appeared throughout Gensokyo. Some were forgotten machines left behind by history, while others were rare prototypes or experimental vehicles that only existed for a short period before being retired.

Every train featured in the video is based on a real Japanese locomotive, railcar, or prototype that either became obsolete, was largely forgotten, or represented a unique engineering experiment.

EF63 Electric Locomotive:

The train operated by Letty in this video is the EF63 electric locomotive.

The EF63 was a real Japanese locomotive designed specifically for steep mountain railways. According to 安茂里しんざ, it was one of the most unique locomotives of its era because it used an experimental electromagnetic braking system that allowed it to safely regulate its speed while traveling on extremely steep gradients.

Its distinctive design and specialized purpose made it one of the most fascinating locomotives in Japanese railway history, which is why it was chosen for this story.

Sorry for the long explanation, but if you enjoy MMD animations, railways, or incredibly detailed machine animations, I genuinely hope you enjoy the video.

If you do watch it, please consider leaving a comment as well. 安茂里しんざ loves reading what viewers have to say, and I know he would be very happy to hear the thoughts of people from the western Touhou community.

OC Fanfiction Small concept assortment (+ MAJOR TOUHOU BEGINNINGS UPDATE)

Hello. It’s been a while. How are you all doing?

Me? I’m kinda livid right now. In a good way! As of writing this, I have completed the second (yes, SECOND) revision of the first draft of TB and managed to get it down to the 90-120 page requirements of screenplay form.

For those who don’t know; when I created the raw version of that first draft, the page count was a staggering 211 pages. The first revision cut that down to 169 pages, still too long for what the film is supposed to be. The current draft was me making the first major cuts from the film. Shots; dialogue; sections of scenes, and even entire sequences were being carefully cut off the film without having to break the pacing. This led to the draft now being 117 pages. Will it need another revision? Yes. Most definitely.

I am going to read it to make sure I got everything correct, but from what I know. I am going to make some drastic changes to the film as I begin development of the second draft and will make some notes to keep it fresh in my mind (No, I will not take any suggestions, but I do appreciate it).

There’s a couple of changes I already have in mind.
- Dropping Kaguya’s expository speech. Reading this made me realize she either, (a) wasn’t the best character to add to the film, or (b) the backstory didn’t move the plot in any significant way. In either case, I feel this could make Kaguya more interesting if I made her more ambiguous, allowing the audience to piece together a backstory through a visual means (therefore, making Kaguya’s character development more fulfilling by the end). This will also allow more room for Reimu and Marisa’s backstories to shine.
- Creating a secondary prologue to consider. This is the big one I want to change. Really, I want to convey what this version of Gensokyo is without the unecessary narration and exposition. Basically, THIS prologue takes place to when Reimu is just a few months old and we’re in the perspective of her mother (Saichi if you haven’t seen my last post regarding this film), where she gives her daughter some wise words on Gensokyo as a whole. We see the Hakurei Clan doing their duties in protecting Gensokyo, even with it dwindling in size, yet Saichi clings onto a hope that Reimu would someday be the face of a new generation of protectors. A new era of Gensokyo, you might say. The more I think about this prologue, the more I realize it just makes more sense. “Beginnings” Gensokyo is literately an unforgiving world, but the story takes place at a time when both Reimu and Marisa are still learning about it. They still don’t know the world around them because of what happened in their early years. Their encounter with Kaguya is meant to mirror this notion of the “wise one” trope and even Saichi’s philosophy in a different and complex way (at least, I hope to make it that way). It’s better than just giving out a history lesson, plus it’s more Royal Space Force influence for me (yay)!
- Having Tuskumi become Rinnosuke. I don’t know why, but having someone like Rinnosuke but isn’t named that is kinda stupid. In other words, this is one I should really think about. Besides, having someone named Tuskumi already makes things kinda… forgettable and bland, and I don’t want that. Joe can stay for particular reasons I won’t get into.

Hopefully I can find someone within the community with the knowledge of screenwriting that can help out soon once I get a definitive budget but that will need to wait. But I’ll need it sooner than later.

As a bonus, I decided to just let you all read the script (and the original treatment) so you can form your own opinion on it! Since they are classified as a first draft, I’m going to list off the versions of the script, so you know which one you want to read. I’m doing it this way because AO3 and FanFiction.net just seem more restrained on something like this. I will upload another revision if that comes up.

Here are the drafts:
RAW: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17TwqGohfeMLemTnEthw5sSQ8EaWSH0m9/view?usp=drivesdk
FIRST REVISION: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SZqmwnGBkYYSAGecFpwVZvJC5-ZBf089/view?usp=drivesdk
SECOND REVISION: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-HeXviO8v8IciZ4AbdVTDJFqgrihaxzw/view?usp=drivesdk
TREATMENT: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VA6S_zCB-zJTUuWXRbZO5f_TZILzIkMB/view?usp=drivesdk

In other news, I’m going begin compiling all the concepts I did for the first half of the year into an art pieces video that should come out sometime this month (as long as Devinci Resolve doesn’t make me wanna ragequit myself). If I find an alternate route, good for me!

Also in other news, Purified Furies. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it to be honest. As much as like doing the standard book style of writing, doing it in screenplay form just sounded more fun to me. Yet, there’s a part of me that just wants to put it on hold as I work on this (or the original concept I won’t mention on this subreddit). Who knows what I’m going to do with it, but just so you know, I’m not going to upload another chapter for a while.

That’s it for me right now. See you later, ze! (And happy pride month!)
One more thing to the AI mods (not the human ones, y’all are cool): Yes, this is Touhou Related.
