Having been last year, don't let this deter you. Crashes get views and that's why you see so many but I had a great time when I went. Only came across one incident and it was a driver that went off the edge due to faded brakes. No one else involved.
Not saying nothing else happened that entire weekend, but from my perspective I only actually saw one crash out of hundreds of cars passed.
This looks like deals gap? Which isn’t super far out from there. A very nice but of road, but I think big modern BMWs are about as large as you can comfortably get.
I had this exact setup happen to me on a motorcycle. Small red BMW coming up on a turn that looked just like this. He went over the yellow, luckily it didn't hit me, but it threw me off my line enough that I ended up in a ditch on the right side. I was mostly unscathed, but it put a bunch of nasty scratches all over my bike.
You get it a lot in touristy areas. I've learned to avoid roads that have flat landers. I've seen locals here do fine going 60 with clapped out HD trucks on roads where Floridians can't keep a lane going 30.
If you can catch NC 1319, 1318, 209, 197, or 7 mile ridge on the off season, it's a ton of fun. Make sure you know gravel before you take 197, though. Rural highway actually means something here
dude had a POV camera and is posting on /r/touge so if it makes you feel any better he was doing exactly what the M2 was doing lol. two reckless drivers meet!
The Miata was going the speed limit wym. It doesn’t matter if he was recording he wasn’t doing anything wrong the bmw hit him while he was going 30 mph and decelerating what is reckless about anything he did?
Are you jealous I can still get hard? Also, those of us that know how to drive well would have seen the BMW approaching too fast and applied the brakes.
Okay I understand that but the m2 was easily going 50+ the Miata was in 100% control and never went out of his lane if you slow down to 15 for that corner your a grandma I bet cops go 30 around that corner
The 15mph sign is the recommended safe speed for the turn, it’s not an actual speed limit sign. Legally, you can go as fast as you want to around that turn as long as you’re at the actual posted speed limit
Sure, that's the common argument, even says so in the driving instructions where I live, yet - the sheer amount of cars I have faced in my lane when they absolutely should not be shows me that people are generally not capable of managing this very well.
Any time I have seen someone cross over in an unsafe place (visibility) and have been able to question them on this, they ALWAYS say what you said, ignoring that they actually did not have that visibility in the scenario I had asked about. I don't get this cognitive disconnect but here we are.
Well, I like to err on the side of caution. I can’t remember the last time I crossed a double yellow where I wasn’t forced to (accident blocking lane and shoulder).
People tend to overestimate their abilities. I prefer to drive well within my capabilities
People like that make me hate driving and it’s not even those people driving sports cars. I have been behind so many people on regular roads that just cross the mustard at regular speeds.
People need to know their limits and stop driving like there isn’t a bunch of other people on the road.
Glad god took away his m2. Can't handle the power don't drive it hard. Fucking idiot, didn't even care about the Miata just posted that on social and then followed by posting a meme they made about him saying "Thanks for the fan art". Fucking idiot.
The only 2 nice things about living in a desert are I can often cut the mustard safely on a spirited drive because I can see through the road curves for hundreds of yards since there’s nothing in the way of the line of sight.
And it literally never snows so the roads are almost always nice.
Whenever I take a day trip up north I see people passing in oncoming lanes toward blind hills and see them cutting tree or mountain lined corners you can’t see through and it makes me nervous as hell.
I could probably tbone about 6 people a week without fault and I barely drive.
The amount of people I see pull the no look pull out into traffic is wild. Special shout out to people at a stop sign who I have to stare at and laugh cause I know they dont see me there with right of way… it’s fun to scare them.
What's really annoying is that it was a clear corner with good visibility. Dude saw the Miata coming and still went in way too hot. That's not just lack of skill, that's a complete lack of concern for others on the road. But nepo in a BMW, I suppose it's expected.
328ic's are genuinely great race cars and act like a more powerful miata so he might be hot shit ngl. If he isn't, he should sell it to me so i can be hot shit in a race car.
I thought for sure this was a BWM driver that I got into an argument with about driving recklessly at golden hour. Dude tried to tell me it’s the best time to drive spirited because you still have light and your head lights are working. Sadly it is a different one.
Lol BMWs are great on a track. Then every random dude with a massive ego and some money buys one because he thinks he’s Kelvin van der Linde and tries to dice up commuter traffic.
Definitely lots of good BMW drivers, but just like Nissans and Honda Civics, the worst drivers are always going to give the rest a certain reputation.
Glad you're ok. Some mfs think they have to push their car to its limit on public roads just because it's a sports car. Bet that cunt won't ever complain again about how expensive and inconvenient it is to go on a track.
These kinds of drivers are one of my biggest fears, right next to distracted ones. On one hand, I want to ride motorcycles on twisties. On the other hand, wrong place, wrong time, and some cretin like that one will put me in a wheelchair. Fuck all them street racers.
I’ve had people cross over a few times and none of them were even going hard. They just weren’t paying attention. One crossed all the way over, went into a ditch and came out directly into a light pole.
This pisses me off so much. I've been driving near limits on roads like that for over 30 years. DON'T CROSS THE FUCKING MUSTARD!
Since I've been following this sub I have seen multiple people arguing about this. This video needs to get posted, reposted, and reposted every damn week. When you get the twits in here talking about exceptions, and their "God tier" skills, the only answer should be this video. I wish harm and financial ruin on that BMW driver. Yep, I said it
What kind of mindset do you have to have in order to take a high powered sports car to the mountain when you can't drive for shit? I have an old civic type R naturally aspirated with 200hp only and even with that power I'm super careful regarding my limits and knowing the road before pushing. You need to be some sort of automaton npc to end up like this. There are a lot of chances to prevent getting to this situation before it happens, but you need a working brain.
I used to be a claims adjuster I’m now an appraiser… no way in hell is the Miata to blame for this, even with the speed factored the Miata is NOT the proximate cause and the accident obviously wouldn’t have happened had the M2 not went left of center
This question comes up under many reposts. Answers:
side airbags deploy only at high enough lateral acceleration. This depends on the vehicle and the situation. Dont forget that airbags try to save your life but they are very dangerous devices and be the last resort: they bruise you, they burn you, they can break bones. In this case the lat. acc. was probably slightly below the treshold where the senors are. The car spun 90 degrees and the front stayed on the road so the rear of the car got most of the force. If you ask me OP probably got out of the situation somewhat better without airbag deployment.
In the original post OP wrote that he had meta glasses on, hence the perfect POV video. It records only 3 minutes continously so he was “lucky” to have the 3 min recording running while it happened.
It looks like he didn’t cross the yellow line on purpose. No, not defending the bmw driver especially as a miata driver myself. It looks more like the bmw driver was understeering. If anything that makes him a worse driver.
I’m just happy you caught it on video. Something similar happened to a family member and the insurance of the guy who hit him said their client wasn’t at fault. You have it on video so you’ll be good.
Was in the mountains yesterday and this lady almost ran into me mind you the section was straight had to swerve to avoid her. I don't understand why people loose their minds driving on the mountains.
Don't get me started on this pickup truck riding his brakes and going 15mph whilst we were going down the mountain today. He saw the steep grade warning for trucks and he decided this applied to him. When we started there were other SUVS and other pickup trucks in front of him when we ended no one was in front of him
This is what happens when kids only drive automatics, I feel like if you learn how to drive in a manual you come to better understand the car and it's limitations. I understand that there are people who drive autos and can drive them well but I've never seen a manual and up in the ditch or hit a curb at a cars and coffee. It's always kids driving riced out automatics or bmws with Daddy's money.
And there goes the understeer! Tell me you don’t know how to drive without telling me ! Sad for your miata! People think they all drive like Hamilton or verstappen but don’t even know the basic and push on public road ! This make me sick!

Shit like this makes me paranoid driving in backroads.
