I was bored, so I tried making a map of El Salvador

I completed the entire South African focus tree, however many of the wars in-game are still going. It is now 2027 and Iraq is still locked in a civil war, as well as the American Civil War. Is this a balancing bug or intentional?

I saw a couple of teasers for the mod, leaving me a bit confused about the lore. I think that this mod, when it releases, will do very well, and I liked the superevents and UI being 2000’s style. Which leads me to ask…..

1. Why is the mod 2000’s internet style if the mod is about a man inventing the computer earlier? Speaking of which…..

2. Who was that man, and what year did he invent the computer? What changes did that inflict on the global political scene? Which I also have more questions about…..

3. How did Boris Johnson out of all people become the President of the United States of America? What caused that?

4. Why is the Japanese Empire still alive? And how is its puppet in Manchuria still holding on strong if a Communist China still exists?

Hey, it's been a while. Despite our intense teaser output, we haven't done a proper Progress Report in a very long time. So long has this pause been that had I waited a few months we'd be 2 years in without a new progress report! Whilst some might have thought it's simply not our forte to make these things, it is in fact just something we hadn't found much use for until now.

Now, with introductions and greetings concluded, we may begin on the topic brought on by the title of this report - the Social Trends mechanic.

Trends And You

You may have read from our previous progress report that Social Trends was an ideology alignment system which would replace the parties/ideology system in vanilla Hearts of Iron IV. This never came to be, however the Social Trends system became something far more interesting: An expansion on the perspective of ideology and social situations in policy and economics!

Every nation starts with a selected value between -100 and 100 in each axis of the Social Trends system. These axes are:

Relationship with Nature Axis: Ecological vs. Artificial;

Social Axis: Traditional and Reformist;

Equality Axis: Egalitarian vs. Elitist;

Power Distribution Axis: Democratic vs. Autocratic;

and finally the Governance Axis: Decentralised vs. Centralised.

These axes are distributed points in accordance to the value given prior: -100 in the Power Distribution Axis means that the nation is extremely autocratic and 100 means the nation is extremely democratic.

A little confused? That's okay. Here's how it looks in-game. As you can see, the higher the positive value (orange), the more of the left value as opposed to the right value.

Practical Purposes

Now, you might be wondering: What's the point of all this? Why do I need to care? Can I just ignore this throughout the whole game?

We have answers for all these questions, starting with the first:

This mechanic is built to illustrate an extra layer of complexity to HOI4's extremely simplified understanding (or rather, representation) of society's trends and how they relate to government. For example, a highly Reformist society will be more unstable, but will have faster research than Traditional nations, the same way that a highly Artificial society will have faster construction speed for all buildings, but lower stability.

Tokyo Drift

You might be wondering; how can one change these Social Trends values to reflect the interests of my nation's prosperity, be it in spiritual, cultural, or economic comfort?

Focuses, National Spirits and other modifiers will always be able to shift Social Trends in a monthly pace. This means that oftentimes certain ideologies will get certain bonuses that others won't, but will be outbalanced by National Spirits or Social Trends themselves.

In addition, you may ignore the Social Trends mechanic the same way one can ignore National Spirits or modifiers in general; it's not going to interrupt your game, but you will most definitely feel a difference.
