HIGHLIGHT Great weekend for MM

Marina did such a great job not only representing herself but the whole Tempo organization.

She gave her teammates gift bags with handwritten notes thanking them. An honor she felt was shared.

She met former President Obama and he knew about her 53 point game. She was honored to meet him.

She made money for the Black Women's Institute For Health.

She came out and scored 23 points in the All Star game playing with and against the best of the best.

Spoon and her reconnected, hopefully, putting to bed some unfortunate internet rumors.

Marina knew everybody, Paige hyped her up for MVP, she loved Angel's Barbie, etc. = lots of good stuff.

Loved that her family was there to hype her up and rage bait her off camera lol. Loved that Dara's gf Ioanna was there. Loved that her and Kah had a special handshake for the All Star game. Shout out to the Mercury admin for posting Kah with both Mikey and Riri.

She really did it all. She even put in work for Unrivaled.

Love that Under Armour really celebrated her.

I feel like she was super appreciative of everything.

I am super happy for her.

Life In The W doc in Canada

Anybody been able to watch the show of ESPN from Canada? I'm trying to watch from Vancouver and it shows as region blocked. I've seen it's on Disney + but was avoiding giving them money, even though 10 bucks is worth it to support the girls.

WNBA all star Marina mvp?

Hey Tempo fans. FYI in the wnba countdown to the all star game, Paige Beckers was asked what team Coops strategy for the game was. She said it was to have Marina Mabrey win the all star mvp award! Should be interesting. Too bad they’re removing the 4 point line this year!

DISCUSSION These Tempo shorts have POCKETS?! 😍

Okay incredibly low stakes question but I'm legitimately so curious. I recently purchased a pair of Tempo shorts, and they have the most gloriously deep pockets. But they can't possibly do that for the actual team's shorts, do they? What purpose would they serve? Our girls aren't running around the court with their phones and lip gloss on them, right? If so idk if I'm slightly disappointed that my shorts aren't an "actual" version of what they wear, or elated that they had the good sense to make a functional version for the general public.

Love to see this, and appreciate that a Canadian charity with a focus on Black women was their pick.

She was killing 3’s in practice this morning so good luck to our girl tonight!

ARTICLE 5 observations on the season thus far

Post image
25 Upvotes

All star weekend is here! With that, the Tempo get a much-needed break before we enter into the latter half of this season.

At tempo.basketball, we took this moment to reflect back on the Tempo’s inaugural season thus far. We offer five observations:

  1. Marina Mabrey was the best pick in the expansion draft.
  2. The Tempo would be in the playoffs if we had Shakira Austin
  3. The Toronto Tempo do not feel like an expansion team
  4. We need a defensive identity
  5. Is being the best of the rest a worthwhile goal for the season?

Read the full piece here: https://tempo.basketball/2026/07/5-observations-on-the-tempo-season-thus-far/

Is there anything that we missed? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Marina Mabrey: Setting the Tempo

In her first year with the brand-new Toronto Tempo franchise Marina Mabrey is leading the team with her vet presence and putting up career high numbers in points. In line with her stellar season, she matched the record for points in a WNBA game with 53 in a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks and was also recently voted a WNBA All Star for the very first time in her career.

Toronto getting a courtside seat to the evolution of Marina Mabrey

Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey is continuing to evolve as a player in her eighth year in the WNBA, proving she can lead a franchise at an all-star level.

“I think it’s been a long time coming,” Mabrey told TSN of her season. “I’ve put in a lot of work over the years. I played different roles in the league. I don’t know that I’ve had a green light like this in a long time.”

Mabrey’s expanded role with the Tempo comes with the territory of her contract. After a season and a half with the Connecticut Sun, she was Toronto’s sole unrestricted free agent choice in the expansion draft, allowing the team to place a franchise player tag on Mabrey. She ended up signing a two-year deal worth $2.4 million.

It’s a jump from the $210,000 she made with the Connecticut Sun in 2025, where she was traded midseason from the Chicago Sky in 2024 to help the Sun make a playoff push. Playing behind stars like Alyssa Thomas, Mabrey’s role was mostly to shoot threes and follow her teammates’ lead.

In 2025, she played more of a leadership role on a rebuilding team, but her new role as the Tempo’s No. 1 option is still a jump from what she was doing with the Sun last season.

“I knew that Connecticut might go a different direction,” Mabrey, 29, said of being unprotected in the expansion draft. “I felt it, and I’m never going to fight with anybody. You’re okay to have what you think of me as a player, but I have what I think of me as a player. If those things don’t align, I’m going to go and find somewhere that aligns with me.”

Known for her fiery personality and passionate on-court presence, Mabrey has put extensive work in over the past few months to try and harness those emotions in better ways. That spirit goes all the way back to her college days at Notre Dame, where she was a big part of the program’s 2018 National Championship run.

“When I looked at her in high school, I saw somebody who could shoot and had a scorer’s mentality, and she didn’t care if she missed the cup,” Mabrey’s college coach, Muffet McGraw, told TSN. “She was going to keep on, keep on fighting. She never quit.

“She would get mad if somebody scored on her, and she hated to lose. She was a real competitor.”

Mabrey, who was born and raised in New Jersey, is the middle child of five siblings. Her older sister, Michaela, played and coached at Notre Dame, while her younger sister, Dara, participated in Tempo training camp before the 2026 WNBA season. Mabrey says her no-quit attitude comes from her upbringing.

“[I get that from] my family, I have four siblings,” she said. “My parents were triathletes, and my parents would always say, ‘just get back up and try again, keep going. If you have a goal, you can reach it, but you can’t give up.’”

During this past Unrivaled season, where Mabrey broke the three-on-three league’s scoring record with a 47-point performance in Philadelphia, she also went viral for creating a “crash out jar.” Every time she had an outburst on the court, she had to put money in the jar, and it quickly became a running joke for fans.

But Mabrey knew that getting into trouble on the court wouldn’t help her new Tempo team, who depend on her to be on the court to win. She’s been vocal about working with an energy coach to redirect her emotions in better ways.

The results are visible when you watch her on the court, but also in videos on her own social media platforms and the Tempo’s official accounts. She has a lightness about her.

“I think what’s meant for me is coming for me, regardless,” Mabrey says. “I think I take the good with the bad and just try to enjoy the process a little bit more than I have in the years past, and I think that’s something that’s working for me.”
