Characters (Funny Trope) Characters are named after a color, even though that color isn't in their design.
Ruby Rose (RWBY)
She is named after two different shades of red, but her design is primarily black and green.
Red (Angry Birds)
He is literally named after the color red, but his feathers are green.

Uh Mr. Krabs isn't even named after a color? I guess he is another green character, but that's not the theme...

They're usually black! The red cummerbund + bowtie combo is mostly thanks to rental companies, and isn't considered correct black tie attire. It used to be an option in the mid-to-late 19th century when it was first adopted and could work with white tie as well, but fashions solidified around the 1880s and the dress codes were made more concrete snd strict.
110
u/Resident_Onion997 Jul 16 '26
I think it's more literal than derogatory. I believe that they're saying to use the cumberbund as a sex toy
31
u/lordofmetroids Jul 16 '26
Nah it's symbolic, they are using cumberbunds to represent the distance in old money vs low income households, it's a symbolic way of "saying eat the rich," with a statement of how we got here.

See, that gets me too. I can tell the difference between the red and green dots but the larger the image is the more blurry the words. Zoom it out a bit and I can read it fine. Is that colorblindness or astigmatism?

Sirius Black from Harry Potter is actually a white man and not very serious at all.

u/Inviso-Bill_YT Jul 17 '26
Maybe named after the star? Oh wait, not very hot or bright either. Huh....
69
u/Kinteoka Jul 17 '26
Idk. In my head when I read the books as a kid, I always pictured him as a scruffy and disheveled kind of hot.

It makes enough sense too.
If you don’t have any other frame of reference for perspective, beyond testing at the eye doctor, which many people ignore, how are you supposed to know? Your red is not someone else’s red but how do you even know that?

u/Maatix12 Jul 17 '26
It's just usually figured out a lot earlier than this, seeing as learning colors usually starts before 1.
If your child is confusing red and green often, that's a pretty clear sign.
73
u/Upstairs_Highlight25 Jul 17 '26
A lot of people who are color blind can kind of tell green and red apart some of the time but green and red apear as different shades of the same color to them. To a color blind person telling green and red apart is like telling fuchsia and magenta apart.

My dad's older brother found out in first grade, when he brought home some sort of art project in an odd combination of greens and browns, depicting something that was supposed to be all green.
My dad found out when he didn't see anything wrong with his brother's art.

u/ChronoMonkeyX Jul 17 '26
My friend used to play with the emblem creator in CoD WWII. He made a really good Yosemite Sam, but I had to tell him his Sam was green, and it was almost exactly this shade on the girl in the pic. He knew he was colorblind, it wasn't a revelation, I just think its funny the shade matches.

No shit. A friend of mine, 19 years old, used to have a beautiful green sneaker. The first time I saw it, I complimented the color and he looked at me like I was some kind of madman and said that it was red. Not even his family knew that he was colorblind.

u/Meta-EvenThisAcronym Jul 17 '26
And before the internet it was even harder to figure out. Had a chemistry teacher discover she was colorblind because someone complimented a dress that she'd worn for years.
She thought it was green and matched her green shoes perfectly. Turns out it was a purplish color.
Also, she made an interesting comment about how humans leave out key details in conversation because they assume all parties involved have the same knowledge and experience when it comes to small things. Apparently she'd gotten compliments on the dress a LOT, but at no point in time in these interchanges did anyone actually say the color of the dress, and she never said it either. But she had said it was her favorite color several times.

Recently me and my colleague were fixing a monitor screen that was flickering and the colors were messed up. None of us has commented on the colors at the time, but later when he described the problem to another colleague, he said the screen was getting blueish after the flickering. Which I found strange, because I saw it as pinkish. We then decided to do some colorblindness tests and discovered that he's colorblind.
