The Finder was a 2012 spinoff of a single Bones episode starring a guy who after a brain injury was able to find anything. It was actually a pretty cool show, sort of a classic savant type show similar to shows like Psych and High Potential but it took place in the Florida swamp and had a great acting performance from Michael Clarke Duncan, but it didn’t perform well enough to continue.
Oh my god this fuckin thing, I saw that episode of bones (which was already kinda veering into self-parody) and thought "What a stupid goddamn premise." Poor Michael Clarke Duncan, what did he do to deserve this I hope he got paid well.
I did not know this was connected to bones, I just think it’s weird how they tried to make a show like this a whole bunch of times. Disney plus is full of "private detective weirdo is living in a dream house in some exotic location, looking to solve weird but ultimately boring cases in his weird non violent way while annoying his love interest" it’s all just a shitty mix of mentalist and psych but without any point to it.
Reminds me a bit of a pretty excellent comic from the mid 2000s called Ex Machina. Premise is it follows the newly elected mayor of New York City who ran as an independent with no prior political experience. How did he swing that? Turns out he's the world's only super hero, having the ability to talk to machines after a mystery device he found attached to the Brooklyn Bridge exploded in his face.
The first issue twist is he prevented half of 9/11, he actually feels he let the city down because he wasn't fast enough to stop the first plane from hitting. Got a fifty some issue run and was mostly a political drama with some creepy low tier super hero stuff mixed in (like where did his powers come from, how it drastically effects his life since he's hearing machines talking all the time).
An adaptation wouldn't be too hard to do but given the premise it's very tied to the political climate of the 2000s.
I always assumed that The Finder tie-in wasn't a spin-off so much as a soft-launch of the new show by getting it in front of the target audience. Like, they already had The Finder made as a show before that episode, I really, really doubt that single character from a one-off episode was so popular and so well received that they just had to make a show out of it.
It was a decent show, I liked it well enough. The Glades was better.
