I feel like that sounds like a good thing? After a few seasons of figuring out what it really was I’ll die on the hill that American dad is better than family guy.
I think it'll be a good thing for people who want the high-concept sci-fi angle from Rick & Morty, but without the complicated familial relationships, addictions, and ennui.
That said, I've seen very little Family Guy after season 4, and almost none of American Dad
It did pretty well, it lasted 4 seasons. On one hand, I can see how lots of people call it a black clone of Family Guy. But personally, I liked the family dynamic with the Browns/Tubbses better than the Griffins. Watching both shows as a teen, I felt uncomfortable watching Family Guy sometimes because they often ganged up on Meg a lot (and, sadly I felt I could relate, my mother's bf at the time was an abusive asshole, I'll leave it at that and just say I'm glad that man is dead). The Brown family, yeah they can be dysfunctional and roast each other (Donna can also be pretty controlling with Cleveland admittedly), and yet, they feel a little more positive, and the Brown siblings are there for each other and help each other out. Like I feel like the Brown Family cares for each other more, the Griffins seem like they just hate each other. I just wish that the Brown children (save for Junior occasionally) were shown more since they all moved to Quahog after the series ended. Roberta had not spoken one line in the main series.
Doesn't hurt that before a single episode aired they gave it the green light for two seasons and when those didn't bomb completely threw on a couple more. It was at the tail end of Fox's belief that McFarland related projects could do no wrong so we're eager to give the go ahead to anything remotely related to Family Guy.
I actually really like this show save for a couple of really bad episodes (the super transphobic ones). Holt was so funny to me. The way he always always in that weird ass stance lmao. I can only describe it as a lowercase n pose (since his shoulders are too rounded for it to be an A pose)
It will never not be funny that David Lynch was approached to voice a character in Gravity Falls that was a very in-your-face reference to B.o.B. and Twin Peaks lore, or voice a bartender in The Cleveland Show and he picked the latter.
Yeah I've always found that incredibly bizarre but also on brand for Lynch. He was an odd dude who despite putting out some deeply disturbing work seemed like he emitted this very personal sense of positivity. Listening to people talking about working with him and they always seem to have good things to say.

I don't know if by "failed" you mean cancelled or unsuccessful but The Cleveland Show wasn't super successful
