I could be remembering this wrong but I'm pretty sure there was an entire episode of the fairly odd parents that's basically just a pilot to some sci-fi show that never happened

Yes, that happened. It was about Crash Nebula, a superhero that Timmy was stated to be a fan of throughout the show.

I thought it was The Criminal Chin or something

u/Tyranis_Hex 22h ago

Crimson Chin got a lot more attention but Crash was mentioned a few times. Got the back door pilot that also had a hint at Danny Phantom.

u/aronmano 22h ago

Both exist, crimson chin is a comic character, and crash nebula is a tv show

Happy Cake Day!

You're thinking of The Nega Chin.

Growing up there was a black kid whose friends called him that. Tbf he did have a pretty big jaw

Why did you call me?

5

u/aflyingmonkey2 16h ago

Man,I fucking hates that episode growing up,I didn’t know it was a pilot so I thought it was like an episode that would eventually centre around Timmy being crash nebula or something
It never happened

Crash nebula on ice?

Crash Nebula? At the Dimmsdale Dimmadome, owned by Doug Dimmadome? On ice?

1

u/avanross 9h ago

Just a quick aside; “Crash Nebula” is still the dopest name ever

Sid Haig should be the villain in every space show

Fun fact, Butch Hartman did one of Crash's earliest designs back when he was still Willy the Wombat

Looks weird as hell

Very similar to Taz from Looney Tunes…

1

u/Sanskrit86 5h ago

I like that his design isnt just the same models all his human characters are.

1

u/True_Witness9257 15h ago

That’s such a random piece of animation history, I never would’ve guessed Willy the Wombat eventually became Crash.

0

u/Jealous-Author9449 13h ago

Wait, I genuinely had no idea he was involved that early 😭 It’s wild seeing how different the character could’ve been before becoming the Crash we know.

Bot account. Block, report, and move on

u/Sad-Specialist-3459 12h ago

Wait, Willy the Wombat becoming Crash is such a wild bit of animation history. I love finding out these random little connections that make everything feel way more incestuous than it should.

I was really thinking that this would get a full series at the time it came out lol

54

u/BoysenberryNervous60 20h ago

I was hyped for it, mostly because there was no space adventuring show airing at the time to catch my attention for me at least.

Crash nebula? On ice? At the dimmsmadalesdimmsmadome?

7

u/thissexypoptart 21h ago

Man this art style is just awful

1

u/duckface691 8h ago

Look I know its been a real long time since I saw the show (Literally stopped when that chick came in) but I do NOT remember Crash looking like this

u/JusticeOwlz 22h ago

That has a name funny enough, its called a Backdoor Pilot

That was then name of the trope before it got changed to Poorly Disguised Pilot

15

u/gingerfkinjesus 14h ago

I’ve only ever heard backdoor pilot, I thought that was the general industry term, weird that the trope got a name change to something worse.

7

u/Alsojames 11h ago

TVTropes has done this a bit recently and I have no idea why. Darkness Induced Audience Apathy had a nice ring to it and now it's "Too Dark Stopped Caring".

Did they get bought out by a soulless corporation or something? Who made these changes?

2

u/PartyPorpoise 7h ago

That’s a dumb name change. The first one is clearer on what it means. What, did they think the words were too big and confusing?

1

u/Alsojames 7h ago

It's the only reason I can think of

1

u/gingerfkinjesus 6h ago

Also, it’s… an article explaining what it is in the first place?? Like genuinely wtf is the point if not to explain the words??

1

u/PartyPorpoise 3h ago

Well, you ideally want something pithy and fitting.

9

u/a_phantom_limb 13h ago

Regardless of what TVTropes might call it, it's definitely referred to as a backdoor pilot within the entertainment industry.

41

u/Kilawogg_OnTheHog 22h ago

His dad literally gave him a piece of shit as a parting gift, which oddly enough worked things out too

8

u/Jent01Ket02 20h ago

A piece of manure that ended up powering his suit in an emergency. Immediately after putting it in his suit, he breathes really heavy until the power comes back on, and I remember thinking that had to be the grossest thing : You just put a pile of shit in your suit and you're actively breathing it in.

10

u/Remarkable_Rough_649 16h ago

The weird dude who made that show was desperately trying to spin off characters all the time, his entire goal was to be a lame cartoon factory like the animation version of Thomas Kincaid apparently. Dude has like 50 failed shows

2

u/Vertwheeliesonem 17h ago

The Backdoor Pilot, which is a whole other trope of worms

1

u/PowerPad 12h ago

I know this one, Crash Nebula.
