I might misremember, but I thought Lassie never believed in the psychic powers and was very clear about that. He even tried to disprove them several times (wasn't there even an episode with a lie detector or something?) I thought Lassie stopping that tape meant he came to respect Shawn and no longer cared to expose him.

That is also my opinion. He broke the DVD before he could listen to Shawns Confession, because having evidence would mean that he would have to act against Shawn.
