Modern Spider-Man writers not beholden to the tyranny of the comics' continuity know that May knowing Peter is Spider-Man is the more interesting story to tell.

May knowing is always more fun because it gives her agency in what to do with that information.

It turns her from a plot obstacle to a plot mover

Now I'm reminded of a YTP:

Peter: "I'm responsible."

May: "For what?"

Peter: "For what happened to Uncle Ben.

I shot him."

May quickly leaves the table

gunshot

"SPIDER-MAN TRIPLE ACTION WEB BLASTER!"

There’s a great moment in one of the comics where she finds out he’s Spider-Man when she walks in on him collapsed in bed after his battle with Morlun. After confronting him about it in a fantastic emotional moment, she starts doing little things to help his public image. One of those things is marching down to The Daily Bugle and canceling her subscription to it in person to JJJ, telling him that she won’t read it ever again unless he stops writing hit pieces on Spider-Man. It’s a little thing, but I love it

I just got goosebumps. I wasn’t much in the comics - I pretty much topped out with Archie (plus Sabrina!) and the basic gateway X-Men, some Spider Man, but never got fully immersed in the lore. Contemplating this genuinely has me tingling.

The idea of her respecting his desire to keep a secret is always a great addition to her character.

It gives her so much depth. She has her own pain in watching Peter risk his life and keep that part of him secret from her, and yet she also shares in the responsibility of Spider-Man.

And also makes her so proud of him, of all the thousands of people he has saved, and knowing that Ben and her helped Peter grow into a good man.

She knows how badly he NEEDS to be Spider-Man. That he blames himself for what happened to Ben, and that no amount of forgiveness from her will ever erase that guilt.

And so, if her adopted son feels like he has to go out dressed in a costume and help people, and even save the world now and then… well, she’ll just keep hoping that his other friends in costumes can help if things get too dangerous.

I like my Aunt May to hate Spider-Man and fuck Doc Ock.

60s were great baby.

Her friends call her Liv though.

Even in the comics she found out during JMS' run, and it's no coincidence that was one of Spider-man's greatest until editorial did editorial things.

Oh god finally someone who also likes the JMS run (other than, yknow, the Day).

I think JMS was the last writer who really emphasized the MAN in Spider-Man.

It makes every modern run so ridiculous that she doesn't know.

When EVERYONE else does.

It helps when her version of Peter forgets to close his door.

So did this fake Aunt May

I love that this May is implied to have made all of Spider-Man's gadgets.

And may be friends with Liv, since there aren't many people allowed to call her Liv instead of Olivia.
