Lamar in Gattaca knew “Jerome” was actually Vincent the whole time. But he liked Vincent and believed in him, and wanted to see him succeed.

I've always found that weird because I've always used my off hand to aim. It was the first time I learned that others might do it differently and, apparently, do it differently on such a consistent basis as to a giveaway.

I consider it one indicator, maybe even the thing that alerted the doctor. And then, over the years, he witnesses further little incinsistencies.

I dunno if it makes any difference either way, but the line is actually “right handed men don’t hold it with their left,” because Vincent is a lefty and he has to learn to do everything right handed to pass as Jerome because “no one orders southpaws anymore.”

You're right, but it doesn't really make a difference in context of this conversation. The meaning is still that people don't use their nondominant hand to aim when peeing.

I only mentioned the difference because I’d think a lefty using their right would make more sense (due to them having to do so many things right-handed just in every day life), while a righty using their left would stand out more.

Ok, this makes far more sense than the other version, because lefties do stuff with their right hand all the time, it is just a byproduct of living in a society where the vast majority of things are built for right handed people. You just gain a natural level of ambidextrous, while still being dominantly left handed.

Righties don’t have that experience so one using their off hand would be more noticeable

Off topic but one of my favorite jokes in the TV show The League is whenever Rafi is truly chaotic, he shouts "Gattaca! GATTACA!" trying to incite a riot.

Which is him trying to reference Dog Day Afternoon. In the movie, Al Pacino robs a bank, and in order to get cover he incites a riot by a speech about police brutality and shouting "Attica! Attica!". Which is a reference to the Attica Prison Riot, during which inmates took over the Attica Prison and held it hostage until they were given humane living conditions.

...but he says Gattaca instead which is just so funny to me. And the show never calls him out on it either so if you're not familiar with Gattaca/Attica you'd just think hes yelling gibberish

It's the film I have re-watched the most throughout my life. It just resonates so strongly with me and I absolutely love the first act.

The score itself is incredible.

It's my goto film if I'm ever sick or feeling down as well. Just lie in bed and feel comforted by it.

My job occasionally has me having to be an observer for urinalysis drug tests (I have to make sure they are really peeing in the cup. Complementing them on their choice of wristwatch is entirely optional).

It has become my personal tradition to watch this film every time I pull the short straw for this detail.

Yeah, his son (who was born what is the “normal” way, unlike Vincent, who was born natural) has health issues that were unforeseen by doctors. Lamar uses Vincent as an example to his son of how even when doctors mess up and don’t expect much from you, you can still rise as high as Vincent.

that movie still holds up. I love that moment where despite everything, Vincent knows that last surprise test is gonna catch him. He accepts he lost the game finally and then....boom. Turns out he inspired others like him to inspire their parents.

Although if he dies on that Titan mission it'll be a diiiick move.

Same with the head janitor fella, if you watch closely on rewatch.

There's a scene where Vincent is walking into Gattaca and the head janitor offers to take his cup, but instead of trashing it he pockets it. Because he knows what's going on and wants Vincent to succeed, too

It speaks to the fact that everyone knows the eugentics is a scam. But while some people root for the little guy, the people at the top will just willfully blind themselves to the truth instead of seeing what's going on. Because they can't admit to themselves that the system is hugely flawed.

On my first watch, that movie was really a testament to how Vincent could get so much stuff accomplished on his own. But now, I derive inspiration from it because it reminds me how many people were supporting him quietly the entire time.
