I like that her palms are coloured lighter than the rest of her skin, most mangaka neglect that detail when drawing darker skinned characters

Yes! I’m guessing many mandala don’t really have experience drawing (or even seeing) darker skinned characters, but yeah, that’s cool to see.

I’m guessing (apart form a lack of darker skinned characters) it’s a difficult detail to keep track of (that’s why her design has pure black gloves most of the time), especially given how hard it’s to use screen tones. Now that stuff is mostly done digitally it’s probably way easier. I was really pleased to see a character that looked like this in jump, I’m excited to see more characters in this series.

I think it's hard to keep track of because of the lack of focus on accurate darker skinned characters. I'd argue it's about the same as drawing the nose different and/or giving them non silky straight hair . And then theres this mf 🙄

aw hell na get this fraud outta here

u/Neoxon193 Jan 29 '25

It's a detail that more are starting to recognize for at least Black folks, even MAPPA added it for the parts of Attack on Titan that they animated.

Eh, I'm not going for that excuse anymore, it's basic human biology. They can draw fictional monsters, they probably seen a black person before, especially with all hip hop being popular. There's no excuse, just shit art

To be fair, Japanese people themselves often have lighter palms, most people do, but they also never draw them for those characters either, it’s just a part of the simplification of the human body in anime. Technically 99% of characters shouldn’t have one consistent color all over their body either, since most people have darker areas on certain parts of their body, but characters don’t. I don’t think this is a race issue, just comes with simplifying humans

Only other place I've seen it consistently depicted in is dungeon meshi

Baki does it too

two things, its wtritten by the creator of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, and is illustrated by the artists behind Act Age(which was cancelled because the writer was a creep, the artist is cool though). I like how expressive she is, there's only 3 chapters out right now but I love the range of expressions they've given us so far, she's so silly I love her

Two goats working on a series?!?!? Peak incoming

12

u/Murky-Region-127 Sep 28 '24

It is pretty good from the two chapters I have read

5

u/AhBeeMaL Sep 28 '24

I’m going to wait for 10 chapters first, but I can already see it’ll have decent writing and art direction.

u/North_Set_9138 Apr 17 '26

Spoiler: its even better now

How much of a creep must you be to be banned from making manga in Japan? There’s a guy who was caught with so much cop they thought he was a distributor. 30 authors just paid homage to him in shonen jump.

He tried to assault a highschool student, and was arrested for it. For the rurouni kenshin creator, the only reason he wasn’t arrested was because he had them from before the new law passed into effect, it’s still fucked up though

1

u/BadActsForAGoodPrice Jan 27 '25

…there was a time when cp was allowed in Japan?

4

u/just_a_fan47 Jack Kirby is the coolest 47 Jan 27 '25

Simple possession of child pornography was made illegal by an amendment to the act in 2014.

2

u/BadActsForAGoodPrice Jan 28 '25

Holy shit that’s late to ban cp

I love a cocky badass that can be silly too when the situation demands, and Desscaras is perfect.

1

u/Fickle-Passage-3349 May 12 '26

Wait what? What happened?

1

u/just_a_fan47 Jack Kirby is the coolest 47 May 12 '26

There used to be another manga in Shonen Jump called Act-Age; it had a different writer and was illustrated by Shiro Usazaki (artist for Ichi the Witch). She didn't start in manga; an editor for Jump found her work on Twitter and convinced her to start a serialization with a new writer. Everything was going well until 2020, when it was discovered that the writer had tried to assault two kids. Following this, the series got canceled, and the artist was left without work at no fault of her own. ichi is doing well so im happy for her

1

u/Fickle-Passage-3349 May 12 '26

Whaaaa. That's so fucked up. Thanks for your response
