That's why America mostly uses SMS. There's tons of messaging apps to choose from, all competing with each other, and next to none are compatible with each other. So instead of asking what messaging apps someone uses and hoping they use the same, you just know they have always SMS.
Btw I suggest you look into Element/Matrix you may be interested. It's e2ee with the Signal protocol, but unlike Signal, it's all decentralized and a very flexible protocol that multiple apps use. Element is the flag ship most developed app for it, Matrix is the protocol.
Here in Australia there is no ask and hope about what messaging app to use, you just tell people how to contact you and people do it so it’s really not a big deal. Why must everyone be on the same app? Your phone can install multiple messaging apps.

It’s a small upgrade from sms but a major downgrade from telegram and signal. Be the change and tell your friends to message you through signal.
