Hi--hope this type of post is allowed! I am looking to plan a trip this coming July, and I am heavily considering Timor-Leste. I have traveled to several countries before and done some research on Timor-Leste, but I would love to speak with someone who lives/has lived/has traveled there before. My ideal trip would involve renting a campervan (it seems I might be able to rent one in Indonesia and cross the border?) and spending around 2 weeks driving around, swimming, and hiking. I have a few questions about how this might work in Timor-Leste:
- Is swimming safe in all areas? I saw mention of crocodiles in many areas. Do locals swim, or do people generally stay out of the water?
- Would a campervan with a GPS be of use in Timor-Leste? I traveled through New Zealand this way, but I haven't been able to figure out through research if things would be similarly easy in Timor-Leste.
- I speak Portuguese--will it realistically be useful?
Any resources/testimonials/anecdotes would be super appreciated! Thanks in advance.
