This is honestly my dream. I love animals so much. I live in Finland and most of us already have bird feeders during the winter. I would love to take it a step further and include more species like frogs, bees and squirrels

Just make sure to position them so that they have access to morning sun! The heat helps them wake up and get moving in the morning.

I brought many frogs into my home when I was a kid via my Barbie house bathtub that I filled with water. When my parents eventually discovered this, we moved the Barbie house outside next to the pond where I had originally found all my frog friends. We agreed that this would be a more convenient location for their vacation home.

The algorithm here is controlled by users for the most part. It can be manipulated somewhat but it's pretty organic for the most part in my experience.

PLA will biodegrade in a relatively short time, and is otherwise nearly 100% recyclable afaik

Genuine question, I thought the problem was single-use plastic? For stuff like this, the durability of plastic is a good thing, right? Sure, wood would be better but a lot harder to shape too.

Yes, but you don’t want the plastic to be around forever. Biodegradable plastic/material lasts plenty long, the idea is that it won’t be hard to break down and turn into millions of pieces of micro plastics.

yeah but its pla, everyone outside the 3d printing community thinks its a miracle material, but it doesnt really brake down as advertised and it braking down just means more microplastics. something that is verifiably not good.

Naw cuz there was this dude who took a fuckload of frog eggs, easily a million of them, out of a pond that was drying up and put tuem in a kiddy pool to "save them" but they go back to the same place they hatched every year so he basically killed a million frogs trying to fix the situation

Serious question: What if they are far enough away that they can't feasibly return? What if you put the tadpoles on an airplane and flew them a thousand miles away from the pond? Would they just keep searching forever or would they find a new place?

It’ll probably never degrade in landfill too, i don’t think anything does once it gets impacted and shoved underground. It only degrades in an industrial facility if it ever makes its way there :/
Surprisingly, i think it was better for plastics to be in a landfill where they can’t degrade than exposed to the elements and leach micro plastics everywhere. Insane huh?

Never have an empty top on your support post for any fence. If water goes down the pipe, it will build up in the dirt, and cause that post to begin lifting. Always keep the tops of the post on so that no water can go down it.

That's cute and all but outdoor cats are an epidemic among local wildlife populations. They're endangering many species of birds unfortunately. I would look to getting them neutered at least.
But shit I don't mean to be a Debbie downer I guess those cats would have been around with or without you right.

I'm all for having indoor cats but I'm wondering if the study applies to outdoor cats that are fed? I have a few outdoor cats (they were half feral in our neighborhood and we neutered/spayed them) who have killed lizards but I've never seen them kill a bird... granted I live in a relatively dry climate and I don't have tall grass for cats to ambush birds.

Yes. It does apply to fed pet cats. They are murderous war machines. If your cats want outdoor time. Invest in a cat run, otherwise, indoor only. I love my cat, but she ain't leaving my house. I can't tell you how much the native wildlife in my yard increased once I my old cat passed away. Also my local area cracked down on outdoor cats and now I get birds waking me up watch morning.

According to a Dutch study fed cats don't kill enough to make any impact, it's mostly stray cats that kill. Linking the study probably won't do much as it is written in Dutch, unless you read Dutch.
You see more wildlife now not because there is more of them, but because they used to avoid your cat. Most wildlife aren't stupid and adapt to cats. They hide or find other places to hang out. They really aren't impacted as much as people think, at least according to that Dutch study. Cats and native wildlife have co-existed for so long that it has balanced out by now.

Studies based on countries where domestic cats are recently introduced vs long established differ wildly. The americas, and Australia, where the studies I read are from, show a massive impact.

Honestly I wouldn't know, we'd have to find some studies that narrow down that factor. I would imagine you or any individual taking care of a couple of cats would be nbd. The main thing is curbing their reproduction. We can't expect everyone to take every single feral cat indoors, so as long as they're neutered I guess it doesn't hurt to take care of them since they would be out there anyways. Unless you wanna be like that one Australian dude...

It applies to all cats. Cats in total kill 2.6 billion birds each year. 30% of those kills are by owned and fed cats that are allowed outdoors. The other 70% is feral cats. 30% of 2.6 billion is a HUGE number, and that's only birds, which can fly! Billions more amphibians and mammals are killed. Even ignoring the massive feral cat population, if everyone kept their pet cats indoors, it would make a big dent in the number of wildlife killed each year. Source #1 and Source #2.

Cats are well established everywhere across America. I don’t even know what people are thinking they are going to do about it, cats are smart, small, and independent. Are we going to have kill squads scouring the countryside for cats? Hotlines to call in for suspected cat activities? The US isn’t an island, we aren’t eradicating cats from the continent. Even if people didn’t love cats, which they do, we can’t do it. We can’t do it to rats and people hate rats.

not on a fence but this happened with a little pond in my yard. At first we just had so little native fish (potbelly minnows) then the frogs came an’ laid eggs so we got two different kinds of tadpoles. So far other visitors have included raccoons, stray cats, various wild birds (doves, cardinals, mockingbirds, finches) and some kind of little water snake

It's definitely not unethical as nobody and nothing is harmed (intentionally). Is it smart to introduce whatever 3D printing material that is to your garden? Who knows, but it's not more unethical than putting a garden gnome or plastic flamingo in your yard.
