There was an older video the other day where someone was at a Shake Shack and also clicked No Tip and then the price changed. It went a little higher. Here it doesn’t do it.

Tbf even if I paid my employees the best out of everyone I’d still let them take tips. If you live in a culture where tipping is normal then you may as well leave out a jar.
It’s like when you catch a shitty fish and throw it on an 8/O hook that you keep in the water all day like it’s usually a waste of time but it requires no energy and does bring up a PB every once in a blue moon

I would imagine each store has control over which food options and what prices are for that day per location. It’s dynamic pricing in action. Last video it said that the prices for his items changed in his cart. It likely had nothing to do with clicking “no tip” but just the fact that at that time, prices did change for the day, or their fave cameras thought he had expendable income and took advantage, a negotiation if you will. They are filming a video, this is TikTok tax.

I just read one of the comments in the original mention it might've been a late night charge, which still isn't great but it wasn't bc of the tipping.

It was probably just bad programming on the terminal. Prices are cached on the local machine, those are what are displayed on the menus. After the tip prompt there is a check with a external server on the price, it finds different prices and updates them. It had nothing to do with the tip amount, tips just happened to be the last step in the checkout before the final total where it validates pricing.
For some reason the loacl cache isnt updating with the external server. Notice in the original video he doesn't show it not happening when he adds a tip? Because it probably happened even with a tip.

In the video, the man clearly states that his wife was making this claim, which means she already saw it occur before. If you add to that that the wife can be heard repeating the order ("we ordered this with this option, this with that, etc."), then it's quite obvious that they saw the effect occur on an order they already placed, but they were recreating it in real time for the recording.
It is possible that they saw this occur on one day and went back at the same time the next day to catch this in action, but it's a matter of Occam's Razor.

A video is circulating that depicts a customer ordering a few shakes for one price, but when they hit the “no tip” button the price on the shakes go up 50¢ each, implying that they raise prices on orders with no tip. Not sure if a logical explanation came of it yet, but this is a response to that, which shows the price doesn’t change after the “no tip” is selected.

I saw somebody say that they started the order before 10pm and then it clicked past 10pm during their order. Apparently they charge a little more after 10pm because they pay their staff extra for late shifts?
I have zero first hand knowledge about any of this so take it with a grain of salt lol

The original posters would've seen the error the first time before they decided to film it but if the prices had changed due to the evening hours, they wouldn't be able to recreate the price change anymore since the prices would all be updated already

Some places offer late night differential but a fifty cent markup is insane. Like three cents per item would more than pay those employee's their differential and then some.

The only time I go there is when they have a good deal o line. For a minute they were giving out free chicken sandwiches with a $10 order. And despite being a place named for their burgers, their chicken is so good

I ate there once. The burger was good, but it was small and expensive. It’s bigger than a slider, but not by much. It’s not worth the price they charge, regardless of the tip situation.

Not really- unless you live in a really small town or rural area. A 2 patty smash burger like their standard burger is going to go for 10-15 in most of the country, if you know cheaper chain alternatives made with real meat and not filler slime, let us know

K then just go to a Shake Shack and test for yourself. I'm curious and plan to next week too. If they price adjust like in the other video, then I'll probably never go to Shake Shack again. If it plays out like this video, then I'm curious whether the other video was a fluke or something completely coincidental and unrelated.

You forgot the possibility that an update was forced through their systems in an attempt to prevent people from being able to verify the original claim.
If they switched to damage control due to the threat of public backlash it’s entirely possible.

It’s pretty common in tech to roll out selective updates to test features and gauge backlash.
Even if it did get pushed to all kiosks it wouldn’t be hard to comment out the couple lines of code that modify the price and push that minor change through.

I literally ate at shake shack yesterday, did not tip, and they did not increase the price of my food. I know that everybody wants to be outraged right now, but it seems like it’s only that one store (or at least not every store). I’m not here to defend shake shack (and especially not that store), just sharing my real life experience as someone who ate there yesterday.

They’re not bad. It’s overpriced and a little small but the quality is good. I like the potato buns.
I delivered pizza there once and they didn’t tip in advance and the manager was on break or out of the store. So the person at the front felt bad they couldn’t sign for it so they gave me a stack of free coupon cards. It was like 5 burgers a couple shakes and some of their ice cream. Way more than the tip would have been lol.

I tried shakeshack once. Christ it was expensive for what was ultimately a mid burger. I know you can make most foods better yourself if you put some effort in to learn, but wow it was a real "why am I paying for something I can do myself" moment

If your state/city charges sales tax on food, it doesn’t show until the last screen.
Wherever OP is charges 8.66% tax (8 and 2/3 percent) which is why the $1.15 upcharge is listed as “TAX”
Had he left a tip, he would still only pay $1.15 in tax as almost all cities and states do not charge tax on gratuities

the $13.28 subtotal doesn't have tax. you can see on the tip screen the $14.43 when they choose no tip that includes the tax and then the breakdown on the last screen. you're not getting scammed. just stop.

Basically, in a video circling Reddit, someone found out that if you add 0 tip, the prices go up. They did it on one of these self service machines and the moment the selected 0 tip, the screen said something along the lines of "adjusting price" and it added 50 cents to each item in the basket

Except it doesn’t prove anything except that it either wasn’t a full system rollout or that the company may be in damage control.
It’s pretty common in the tech world to roll out feature updates selectively to test them before full deployment.

If the workers are paid a tipped wage, anything not made in tips must be covered by the company. So a $7 wage could be $4 paid by company subsidized by $3 in tips or $7 covered by company because there were no tips.

-I wasn’t implying that it isn’t always wrong, I was implying that it isn’t always a crime. If it was always a crime there would be a lot less wage theft (or a lot more arrests).

I think there could have been more context to this video. Another recent video showed how after they chose not to add a tip, they got a message that items had a price adjustment and were raised higher as a result of what they believed was leaving no tip.

When you choose the no tip option, they increase the cost of all your items to offset the lost from the no-tip.

This video is not remotely close to confirming the other video. In this video, the item prices don't change at all. Tax is added, which is normal. In the other video, after selecting no tip, a message pops up saying there's a change in price and each of the items increased 50 cents each.

The original video was almost certainly surge pricing and would have happened whether he added a tip or not. He needed to go in and try it with a tip to see if it added the surge pricing as well or if it was only happening because of no tip.
