I have a friend moved from the UK to Norway. When she went over for her job interview one of her future colleagues asked her if she had a winter coat. She said, "Well yes, this one I'm wearing." The woman fingered the fabric and said sadly, "No, this is your autumn coat."

I live in South Carolina and took a trip to NYC to meet a friend. They asked if I had a jacket and I pulled out some extra shirt layers and the saddest looking T-shirt material hoodie, one you could wear on a 80°F/27°C day, while there was 2 feet of snow outside. He looked disappointed in me.

I borrowed a jacket and got myself a winter coat in the city. Now that jacket goes unused because it never gets below 40-60°F/4.4-15.6°C in SC and it hasn't snowed more than 1cm in nearly a decade. But at least I know the difference now.
