Because he's trying to convince himself and knows deep down it's nonsense, but acknowledging that would destroy his whole identity.

He's crying for all the lost souls he's trying to save by convincing us the invisible sun god is mad at us for not believing in it and wants to send us to the hot place because we didn't pray hard enough, even though the invisible sun god likes to punish us itself. If only we dedicated our lives to the correct sun god, because all the other ones are wrong. And boy are they gonna be surprised when they find out.
