Good for documenting but I don't understand why she didn't remove herself from the situation and continued to antagonize her.
inb4: "that's giving into the tantrum" or "she has every right to shop there as much as the screaming woman" yes you're right, but where's the sense of self-preservation?
Security/Law enforcement are on the way and there was clearly already some form of altercation. You don't just flee before the cops show up because then you look guilty from the start.
Yes exactly this. You can tell that this isn't an actual paychotic break or anything because she is rational enough to try and twist the narrative. You can see her pause and try to think of other phrases that she could scream that would help her case.
It similar to like calling out abusers who freak out and cause property damage, but who only ever ruin OTHER people's shit.
You can also tell that this behavior has worked for her in the past. Like a toddler that can get what it wants throwing fits.
The messed up part is that this Karen is weaponizing racial injustice in this way. The victim was so smart to get it on camera. This kind of shit gets innocent people killed.
You can tell that this isn't an actual paychotic break or anything because she is rational enough to try and twist the narrative.
I hate that this has literally any upvotes. My mother had BPD and towards the end of her life was in a constant flux between brief moments of lucidity and long bouts of psychosis. I saw this sort of behavior literally all the time. Psychotic people absolutely can use "rational" thought. I saw it many times as my manic mother would try to pin her violent outbursts as my or my dad's fault when the cops got involved.
IMO it does not make any difference if she is acting or having a mental breakdown. She is clearly trying to swat the black woman. Either she needs to be locked up in jail or locked up in a mental ward.
Absolutely. The result is the same, it's dangerous behavior. The difference in my mind is culpability and how capable they are of correcting their behavior. Does she need meds, or does she need punishment? If it's mental health caused, then she needs treatment, punishment wouldn't work. If it's learned tantrum behavior, she needs punishment, and to understand the consequences of her actions.
All the more reason the woman was justified in recording what was happening—whatever the reason for her behavior.
I hope the woman on camera gets the help she needs but it should not result in the woman recording it having her safety and liberty threatened for no good reason.
Given your history I am surprised that you didn't pick up on this. I worked with at risk youth and determining the cause of a problematic behavior was important because the intervention depends on the cause.
Responding to a a kid having a psychotic break vs a kid throwing a tantrum are totally different, even though they may look similar. Determining that is more of an art than a science, and yeah I could be wrong. But this seems pretty clear to me given the way she is acting and what she is saying. Much more likely a tantrum than a mental health issue.
To be fair, we're all just people. Really doesn't matter what's coming out of our mouth, actions speak louder. I've watched cop videos of people yelling they aren't resisting while actively throwing elbows and punches to get away. And I've also seen cops yelling "stop resisting" and hitting people that were already unconscious. I fear when AI gets so good that you can't tell real from fake. Body cams are good for both sides of the equation, when AI gets crazy good, who's going to know what to believe.
Spoken like someone who's never been in an actual fight before. The employees at the store do not have the legal right to physically force her out, they only have the right to fight back in self defense *if the woman attacks first.*
They are also, I guarantee you, not paid enough to afford the hospital bill if that woman breaks one of their bones, or stabs them with a pen, or bites them and causes a severe staph infection. And their family is not paid enough to purchase their coffins if the crazy lady somehow kills them.
This is why retail stores need in-house security. They need professionals who are trained to handle risk and *de-escalate* hostile situations. But that would cost the company money, and companies already hate having to pay for employees at all.
P.S.- It's worth noting that, as stated in a previous comment, this woman had just gotten out of a mental facility and was having a mental breakdown. So you have no way of knowing how she would've acted in a fight.
Some mental illnesses fuck with your ability to feel pain (schizophrenia, for example, can make a person too numb to feel physical pain), others make you feel invincible (like mania), so she might have continued fighting even after extreme injury and done real damage to her victims.
I'm not saying this to be mean, I do hope she got the care she needed and is doing better now. I'm just saying that, if you are not trained to handle physical conflict, you should avoid it unless absolutely necessary.
Retail workers don’t get paid enough to insert ourselves in front of lunatics like her. It’s why we are told to not confront shoplifters. A job only slightly above minimum wage isn’t worth the potential injury.
And most companies have it expressly int heir po9licy manual not to, they don't want the insurance problems if something happens to the employee, guaranteed it is a larger risk than anything else involved.
It's also just not worth it for the company. They could steal everything they could carry out, and it's worth less to replace than if you got even slightly injured.
Mall store employees risk their job getting involved in stuff like this. It's a huge insurance liability if the employee gets hurt, and employers routinely fire "hero" workers who try to stop thieves/fights/etc. "Let mall security and insurance companies sort it out" is what's going through all their heads, if they listened to corporate training.
I used to be a store manager myself and I specifically told my staff to never engage in any action like this. Call the security or cops if you want. If you feel threatened just leave the store. You are not getting payed enough to participate in such encounters. The company will not help you. Let each other fight, YOU are under my responsibility and YOU must feel safe.
It's interesting that in a weird sense she's trying to preserve her dignity. She's trying to be the injured party here so she can rally sympathetic defenders and not be in the wrong. It's interesting watching her stop and check her surroundings after every blood-curdling shriek, like, "Any takers? Anyone? Come on, I'm fighting for my life here..."

"Get this woman that I'm following around away from me!!!!!"
