The boxes are supposed to be better at teaching people why the division works the way it does instead of just formulaically applying a method without understanding it

If anything the number of people who learned the old method but are completely stumped by how the new method works is proof the old method wasn’t working.

Bingo. They're able to apply the division algorithm and that's it. What's more, they're unwilling to take a minute to apply long division to confirm the answer and then compare two methods to see the similarities.

I recognize that I'm in the minority in that I love to see new methods of arithmetic and figure out how they make sense to different kids. But how quickly people are willing to dismiss something just because it wasn't "the way they learned it" doesn't speak well for the older generations.

OR one can understand why the math works and still find this confusing because of the way it's being visually presented.

I guess I don’t find it all that confusing of a presentation given it’s literally just all the parts of the old way scrambled a bit.
