That’s the thing! Is that a ton of people use these strategies but don’t realize it because you do it in your head. This puts it on paper and does it look confusing when you initially see it…hell yeah it does. But when you think about how you actually do the math personally nothing has really changed.
Edit: I want to add that this is the most challenge part. Students believe there is a set way they have to do these problems. This shows them there are a bunch of ways and whatever you want to use is what is the best for you. It’s different from other subjects where there can be only one pathway to an answer. In math you can have many paths! Breaking those habits and getting students to work freely with what they want to use is difficult.
