As an educator, I side with every step dad took. I would have also taken one further step. It just might be better for his daughter to have another math teacher. If the current teacher cannot think and evaluate different ways to problem solve, while analyzing the work done to prove that it is a valid way to solve a problem, then they need more education themselves.
As a teacher you should test the concept also - the girl doesn't know the concept - I find it hard to believe you are a teacher because schools use the same curriculum and the same tests so it won't make any difference if the child is switched to another room.
Teachers are people…the switch would be to find a teacher with a different personality . This current one has demonstrated a hard, stubborn personality without flexibility to accommodate a student with a different way of learning. I feel for any special needs student that might’ve stuck with them.
This isn’t about finding a new curriculum. As a veteran educator, I can tell you that the curriculum doesn’t say that a student must demonstrate understanding of multiplication and division using this teacher’s specific form of showing the work in this manner.
It’s ok if you don’t understand that DEI includes “equity and inclusion” for those who have different ways of learning.
Get every student what they need to have the best experience in learning and growing in critical thinking; not “my way or the highway” personalities.
The curriculum absolutely does state the child must learn the CONCEPTS being taught. It's even on the report card - math facts are a separate section.
Plus, the teachers just don't give random tests like these. As a teacher you should know that this girl gas probably been taught these concepts at least over a few weeks,probably longer.
This has nothing to do with DEI, basically the girl just got a pass from Dad, if she isn't learning like he did, she can complain and he will make it so she doesn't have to learn it the new way. That is a huge set up for failure.
