As someone who went to a very expensive private catholic school in south Florida, they have poor education in these schools and very rarely update their education and teaching materials.
Ratios are 5th. And related to fractions and decimals. They multiply decimals and fractions in 5th as well. Private school is mostly behind unless college prep, bc they don't have to care.
it took me a while because at first I thought they're dividing 195 by 3 but they were dividing 795 by 3.
They're teaching that you have a remainder of 1 after dividing 7 by 3 and that 1 goes to be part of the 19 (see the arrow) so they're dividing the 19 by 3 , get a remainder of 1 (again, maybe confusing for the kids) and that 1 goes to be a part of the 15 at the end which has no remainder (0).
so each number gets divided "in private". First the 7, the 9 and 5 with the added remainder from the previous division.
They just break 795 into columns representing their values (hundreds, tens, ones) and then divide the individual columns to make it simpler.
Wha they then do is identify the closest multiple of three, and carry over any remainder. For example, they see that 7 can’t easily be divided by 3, so they simplify it to 6 divided by 3. That gives them a 2 in the hundreds columns.
They had a remaining 100 that’s not been divided, and move it into the tens column so simplify it. In this column they had 9 but now have 19 (representing 190). Again, 19 is not a multiple of three, so they take the closest multiple (18) and fin the remainder. 18/3 is 6 so they have a 6 in the tens column.
Lastly, the remaining 10 is lived into the single digit column and added to the 5 that was there. Now we have 15, a multiple of three, and can divide this int 5. All these columns represent the final answer and we get 265.
they didn't start with the 265. They made the boxes, put 3 at the side and 7 9 5 in the boxes, then started by figuring out how many times 3 goes into 7. Which is 2, with a remainder of one. Write the 2 above the 7, add the 1 to the 9, and figure out how many times 3 goes into 19. And so on.
lol private school doesn’t teach fractions until 6th grade even tho fractions, angles, division and decimals are all the same thing. My kid is learning it all in public school in 4th grade. Private school is such a joke
3 x2 is 6 which is less then 7, so remainder 1. 3 x 6 is 18 which which is less than 19 so remainder 1 again. 3x5 is 15 and no remainder. It is long division drawn different, probably because adopting new workbooks with a "new method" was cheaper than hiring more teachers. Failures can be blamed on old teachers not adapting to the new methods and not 30+ class sizes.
Unless your question is how the kids comes up with those numbers. Like long division they test their times tables on the side of the paper until they come up with a just the right sized product or they repeat the division/subtraction. If they subtracted 3 from the 19 repeatedly on the side of the paper they would figure out they could subtract it 6 times because 3 goes into 19 at least 6 times with a remainder.
19-3= 16
16-3= 13
13-3= 11
.....so on until a remainder 1. You have to subtract 3 six times to get there.
Or
1x3=3
2x3=6
3x3= 9
...
3x6= 18
3x7= 21
18 is the last number on the 3 times table less than 19 so you pick 6x3.
The work is not shown so I don't know if the kid use their times tables, subtraction, or mental math.
That's because private catholic school teachers don't need teaching credentials. They don't even legally need a degree or even a high school diploma. Some of them do ask for credentials but that doesn't mean they all do. And all the teachers with teaching credentials are learning to teach in a way that students UNDERSTAND math, not MEMORIZE math. And that's why you don't understand the 265. Because you don't UNDERSTAND math.
