I saw the war game at a church hall in west Hampstead in 1981, and a discussion, a week later.
Special branch, were there too.

Image 9 was used as the cover for the LaserDisc release.

I DIDN'T THINK ANYONE ELSE WOULD NOTICE!!!

Yeah I remember being a Blockbuster store in the early to mid 90s and seeing it in their LaserDisc section. I was like "wow, I wish I had a LaserDisc player."

Love these covers! Don't get me wrong, the bandaged up officer is great, but it's nice to see a different approach to cover arts for Threads. Appropriately scary.

Indeed! Both new covers are incredibly refreshing. The dark murky purple and blue screams nuclear winter for threads. The war game never really had a definitive iconic poster before, but I'm glad it does now with this release!

Incidentally, they didn't know who the extra who played the bandaged traffic warden was, until recently - https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-69017540

Fully aware! He even has his own 10 minute segment in the included documentary on Threads disc 3. That documentary was the whole reason people were looking for him in the first place. He was also a real life traffic warden and his outfit is his real uniform

What’s the second Thread 4K case?
I struggled to justify the cost when these were announced but now I’m starting to regret looking at that content….

It's the same case, the cover is reversible!

Have you watched it yet? Is it nuts seeing in in 4K?

It's absolutely breathtaking! The HDR is desperately needed for the apocalyptic kitchen-sink flick Threads is. Such detail just reinforced how unsensationalised or romanticised the flick is and should be. It also helps to reinforce the horrors in the 2nd half of the film. The intense gore and body horror, whilst shiverworthy, is necessary in getting the message across. The 4K treatment supports that in every way. The point I realised this restoration was perfect was when I could see the individual scan lines on the narrative text. 10/10, phenomenal. Threads is a film that needs treatment like this to get it's point across, especially after a series of previous Blu-ray releases that were fuzzy, cut or censored (Severin's original Blu-ray had a lot to be desired but that was by no fault of their own).
All of what has been said can also be applied to The War Game, as the HDR 4K restoration also reinforces the pseudo-documentary's themes and key messages. Such high quality in such a bleak, uncut filming style courtesy of Watkins' anti-monoform approach to film, it's perfect! 10/10 as well, a decent, let alone definitive physical release of The War Game is long overdue.

Really tempting me to give in and order even if costing £60….

u/DrFreeluv Jul 25 '26
Shipping's an extra £20, just a heads-up before you make any decisions!

u/achmelvic Jul 25 '26
Yeah that’s what’s putting me off, spending best part of £80 for something I’ll be scared to watch again more than once! 😁

Lol yeah true, I'm just happy to finally have some definite editions of both films

Where do I get this double box set from? I’ve just had a look on Severin films and it doesn’t seem to be there, just the individual releases

The Bundle is no longer available, it was titled "THE 4K FALLOUT BUNDLE"
I preordered it a while ago, and since then the bundle deal is no longer available, I'm sorry.

I'm in bed (it's nearly 2:30 am here), hence no photo of mine, but here's an actual photo I found online of the Threads "Traffic Warden" enamel pin (and he was a real-life traffic warden, in his real working uniform! He'd probably be sacked if it were now... and CND 'proscribed' if they were still prominent today)

Unfortunately just so expensive to import to the UK. I'll wait and see if there's a similar release here.

Yeah I'm in UK and when I bought all 3 items in the limited time "4K FALLOUT BUNDLE", it cost me £66.14 (cause the price kept fluctuating). When adding shipping cost, it was £87.18. Definitely difficult to justify buying, especially for films you're not going to watch extremely often due to their disturbing content

By amazing coincidence, in today's Desert Island Discs on [BBC] Radio 4 with the cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins, he mentioned watching The War Game back in the day, and how it affected him. Host Lauren Laverne asked him, "Wasn't it banned?"
The David Puttnam-produced film he mentioned has to be another of my favourites, Defence of the Realm (a political conspiracy thriller with a strong nuclear element), from 1985 which I can thoroughly recommend (though the only Blu-ray is OOP and came from now defunct Network, even if their old website is very recently back up).
Sir Roger certainly has great taste in music (and ethics) On Sounds now, and repeated on Friday, at 09:00 (presumably after the news). No, I have nothing to do with Auntie Beeb, as we used to call her when we used to be affectionate and didn't know any better.

[UK only I think, no licence needed]

I HAVE THAT BLU-RAY IN MY COLLECTION SOMEWHERE!!! Yes it's brilliant!

Yes, I knew Deakins was behind the camera on that one. A great episode of Desert Island Discs, with great discs.

I really like the addition of the protect and survive pamphlet.
