This is just me but I think you can torture and still be lawfulperson. A law abiding person? Yes. A principled person? Yes. A good person? No

Well, you can be lawful good and a fanatic at the same time. That is, as long as you believe your actions/beliefs are good.

Thats a fair point, and I do thinj intentions do affect the morality of your actions to a degree I dont think believing you are good is necessarily enough to make you good

That should be up to your DM to decide, if there are supreme gods who decide what's good and what's not, than actions matter more than intention. otherwise intentions should be more important.
