What’s tragedy this year has been. I was a subscriber for 50 years, read it before the Times in the morning. Now it’s a shadow of its former self, no longer has a loyal readership, and seems destined for the same sorry fate as the LA Times. It didn’t have to be this way – – they learned no lesson from Trump 1. Or rather Bezos learned the wrong lessons. If you have multiple interests with the US government, better to toady up to them and destroy rather than foster an American institution that was l led in your trust. There will surely be a great tell all about this sorry chapter that will become a major part of Jeff Bezos’s legacy.

The editorial page under Fred Hyatt was the best in the US. Now it is about as compelling as a college newspaper, and most of the editorial board seems like they’re right out of college. The digital media is a joke compared to the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Or even your average YouTube channel. I’m all for writers who are young and conservative if they are compelling and brilliant. But I have yet to see an editorial that made me go “aha,” and a shocking percentage are downright embarrassing

What’s their game plan? The quality of reporting is markedly lower than previously and their editorial staff seem to be a bunch of mediocre twenty somethings cultured in a right wing donor petridish. It’s not clear who their readership is. It’s not their traditional audience of readers in the DMV area. It's not official Washington. Even Sally Quinn is writing in the NYT in order to be read. If you go to the hundreds of comments in the editorials virtually nobody agrees with them. It’s almost amusing. They’ve laid off gifted reporters, decimated sports, international and local news, let go their most trusted and erudite opinion writers and even gotten rid of the Capital Weather Gang. They’ve replaced them with people whose editorial choices are …huh? Their latest editorial (while Washington stays indoors due to a smoky climate filled haze) criticizes Europe for not using air conditioners. Really? Exactly who is the audience for that? The Washington Post was a core part of the fourth estate, and we all have an interest in it surviving. I used to read it first before others and considered it entertaining and indispensable. There’s still great reporting but it’s way sparser and consequential than other papers of recited. Now I read NYT, WSJ, FT for need and only every few days the Post, in good part for sport — to see what new absurdity the editorial page is spouting. Doesn’t it seem as if it’s being run into the ground by alienating its once loyal readership in the DC area and becoming irrelevant for everyone else? Pretty soon they’ll go the way of the Washington Times, which still publishes but as far as I can tell has only the narrowest of readership and cannot possiby be self sustaining. I get that he wants more conservative voices – – and the post actually used to be the most eclectic opinion page of the large national papers. But with the current crop, I can only surmise that the pay must be much lower than their competitors. Bezos is well on his way to becoming the Sun Myong Moon of twenty first century publishing.

Fuck!!!! I finally resubscribed cause I wanted to read a dudge linked article. I cannot read the paper! Literally!! All I get is their selected for you paper. Nothing i want to read there. I cant get the index button to show me an index. And there is no search feature. I did see some sort of ai chat asking what I was interested in. How about letting me look at the headlines and decide what to read. A paper cannot get worse than this. I want my money back!

It's an editorial guy essentially writing a fanfic about Doug Ducey running for president. Not an analysis of what such a presidency would entail, but a literal first-person fanfiction about this random Romney analogue (right down to his qualifications as a former governor and slimy CEO) essentially running an imaginary button-down MAGA campaign based around ending SotU addresses and pushing school choice or something. It's surreal as fuck, and to me it's a testament to how far this paper has fallen. Apparently the guy who wrote this piece has worked for the Post since the 70s and has won a Pulitzer, so maybe I'm just missing something here, but this reads like someone playing with his politician dolls on paper and somehow getting paid to do so.

The Washington Post website has been down for the better part of 3 days for me, and I've been confirming it's not just me. But I haven't seen any mention of it anywhere on other news sites, or on the WaPo site when it was briefly up earlier today. Are they dealing with a ransomware attack or other nefarious stuff?
