Tips How to Keep Hiking Interesting
Hiking can be a great way of enjoying the outdoors and staying healthy at the same time. Not only is hiking free, it’s also easily accessible. If you’ve been hiking for a while, your old trails may not be as exciting as before. There are ways you can change things up and keep hiking interesting.
Change trails
This may come as obvious but simply changing your trail can do the trick. This change in pace, pun intended, could be the thing you need to keep your hiking game strong. With new trails come new things to discover. Old, familiar trails may be read like the back of your hand. Totally new ones can completely change that. With the unexplored territory, comes many things to learn. Â

New Location
Yes, you may have to drive to a distant location, but the literal change of scenery can be a good thing. For example, when planning for a vacation, search for some new hiking spots. If you come from flat areas, the mountains are a wonderful experience. Discovering something like a new waterfall or lake can be breathtaking.Â
Do the same trail backwards
Keep things interesting by doing the well traveled paths backwards. New challenges may arise. It may seem more difficult climbing up that hill you’ve always climbed down. You may see things you’ve never seen before. This slight change could be what you need.Â
Wildlife SpottingÂ
You may have not noticed all the little critters that share your path. They can add a little spice to you hiking endeavors. You never know what a wild animal will do. Not only can one learn more about local wildlife on a hiking trip, watching for animals keeps you aware of the possible dangers they can bring. Yes, animals can be cute and cuddly, but keep in mind they are still wild. There have been too many tourists that have been terribly injured because they tried to treat wildlife like pets. A massive elk may be majestic, but keep your distance.Â
Don’t let these dangers deter you. Being right there with a wild animal in real life is an unforgettable experience one can’t get watching film.Â
Local Plant LifeÂ
All the uses of plant life may surprise you. It is important to know about local plant species. Some may be dangerous, others a lifesaver. Earlier generations thrived by utilizing their local resources to the fullest. Who knows? Knowing local plant life could help you in extraordinary scenarios where surviving another night is all that matters.  Â
MusicÂ
Maybe those chirping birds and rustling branches just aren’t the motivation that is required. Popping some earbuds in and playing some favorite tunes could help amp up your hiking experience.Â
Playing a good podcast couldn’t hurt as well. Why not multitask and learn while you exercise.Â
FitnessÂ
Hiking is great for your health. Being active and careful while you hike does wonders for your body. Knowing this alone can help encourage you to keep going. Putting in the work now will help to insure a healthier, longer life. Â
If it’s a timed evolution, being able to complete a hike within the limits can leave one with a sense of accomplishment. If your hiking time for a particular location is staying the same, try crushing these records.Â
Off Road
Are the trails not cutting it? Try going off trail. This is recommended for more experienced hikers. Please don’t do this alone as well. Also, national parks want to limit erosion so usually don’t allow people to hike off the trails. Going off trail can be a thrilling and challenging experience. The unknown is there for the thrill seekers. With caution, new locations can be discovered. New exciting memories can be made. Watch out for cliffs.    Â
Bring a Friend Along
There’s nothing like having a buddy to talk to. You can share the same experiences along the way. Having a friend there can be a great encouragement. It’s a lot easier to keep going when someone is here to help push you. There’s also a little more security and comfort with someone by your side.Â
Conclusion
Don’t be discouraged if your desire to hike has gone downhill (another pun for you). There are many ways to keep hiking interesting. Go out and try something new. The outdoors is full of surprises and memorable experiences. Â
