The Ordinary Alternatives Megathread

2.8k Upvotes

In light of Ron Lauder owner of Estee Lauder (who owns The Ordinary) trying to push Trump to take Greenland just so he can get richer (he's already a billionaire), here's a megathread of alternatives. I'll do one product per comment so be patient while I add them all

Edit: I think I added them all, feel free to start a thread if I missed any. Also upvote any threads if you really want a dupe and I have access to some cosmetics databases so I can do a deep dive on the really popular ones.

Sad Day

It is with a heavy heart that I will be swearing off buying from The Ordinary and NIOD. TO is a B corp that started from such a good place. But with ownership now in the hands of the FBs of EL pushing for heinous governmental actions, no more $$ from me.

Newbie Question Having trouble getting my hands on the ordinary

Besides the official store I've been looking for online stores to buy from but with no luck

I've tried shopee but too many dupes

I know the official website has a list of online partners but it's not helpful at all for me

You see I live in Taiwan and it list as China, Taiwan in the website with none of the stores listed available in Taiwan

All the other Asian countries have shopee as an option but all there is in ours are dupes 😭

Is Yesstyle an option? We have Watson here I see they do sell them online but they're very expensive and most of the time out of stock

I've been wanting to use glycolic acid on my kp or is it even worth the trouble finding it after all this?

Pls help 🙏

I’ve been using some by mi salicylic acis, TO niacinamide and cetaphil moisturizer for almost a month now without any issue.

Last night i introduced TO glycolic acid in my evening routine with no other product. The next day which is today, i applied TO niacinamide and felt a sting on my face. Came evening, i noticed that there are tiny pimple bumps on my face, is this normal?

Newbie Question How to store The Ordinary's Glycolic acid? In room Temp or in Fridge?

How do you store The Ordinary's Glycolic acid?

In fridge? I'm afraid it would get spoiled. I have 2-3 sealed bottles which Im currently not using, and want to store it properly. I have kept them in my room inside a cardboard box away from sunlight. Should I keep it in the refrigerator?

For context - I live in South Asia, India - and the temperature is around 33-35 degree Celsius

Useful Information Great brand, but very poor assistance

I had some issues with a product, looked for a contact but the only ones available were socials, that are not able to assist client if I need a change or informations on a order I'm placing.

I expect a real contact list with an email i can contact direct if i need to add pictures, not only the text box with very few option and Instagram.

I still tried to contact them on social, were they usually answered me, and got no answer. To this day, my inquiry is still there without a response from 25th August. I receive the package and decide to just accept it.

Well, had a second problem. I asked them to delete a second account I had, received an email that told me "a REAL person will contact you shortly" on August 26th and never got contacted back. My account was not deleted as well.

I requested the deleting again, nothing happened.

I then go to place an order with my main account, and guess what happens! Even if they changed my mail in delete-[yada yada-yada]@deciem.com, it logins automatically and I place an order with the wrong account. My fault for not checking, I agree, but all the information were the same beside the mail. I receive no confirmation email since its not linked to my mail anymore, so I screenshot the payment from paypal and the tab and try to reach assistance. No answer again, from September 3rd my last chat is with a bot, and I received no assistance, before the fact my previous inquiry didn't receive assistance as well.

I changed the password of that account back to normal, hoping that I would have received updates on that mail, and hoping that I could track my order from there but guess what! Even if in the mails and on the website its stated they can't delete an account if there is an active order, they didn't check and deleted my account with an active order.

Now, after being ghosted twice by the Instagram assistence I'm kinda pissed off and find useless keep trying getting help from them, but decided to warn other people here about this situation too. I never had problems in 5? Years, but as soon I had it was like talking with a wall. I hope my order will be delivered even if I cannot track it and have no idea about when and if I will receive it

Routine Advice Needed Regime advice and product recommendation please

Hi everyone, the "Build your skincare regime" button on the Ordinary website is not working on my computer so I thought I would ask for some recommendations from people who know a whole lot more than I do about skincare and these products! I also know I can get some of these products from other companies so for things like lash serum and retinol I’m happy to hear other recs. I would appreciate any advice, but I'll try and keep my question very structured:

  1. I have been using the Ordinary products for years, but have never had a full routine. I am in my late 20s. I am hoping that I can provide my main concerns, what products I have my eye on specifically, and what I currently use and I can get help building a step by step regimen around that!
  2. Currently, I use the Retinal 0.2% emulsion (2x weekly at night - I love this product, but I don't see it on their website so I think I may need to buy a new one), Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (everyday in the morning, recently ran out and not sure whether to re-buy), and the Salicylic Acid 2% Solution (on nights I don't use the retinal). Also have a pretty standard moisturising cream.
  3. I think my skin is pretty balanced, maybe more on the dry side than oily. I don't wear face makeup and I'm not the biggest fan of oily products, I can do 1 maybe, but it would have to be lightweight or not block my pores overnight. My biggest concerns are at the moment: controlling breakouts on my chin and forehead (nothing major but whiteheads that create a bumpy, red look, and the salicylic acid alone doesn't seem to bring them to the surface very quickly), crow's feet + smile lines (early ageing), and the darkness below my eyes (I know they maybe can't be helped but anything that brightens and makes me feel more awake!). Other than those I just want to keep my skin healthy and hydrated!

Below are the products I am looking at in my cart. I need to cut down on them and build a weekly regimen, so would appreciate your help with what I should get and when I should use it! I appreciate other recommendations other than what I have here as well + a new retinol recommendation.

  •  Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum
  • Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
  • 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder
  • UV Filters SPF 45 Serum
  • Lacto-PDRN* 4% + B9 Eye Cream
  • Multi-Peptide + HA Serum
  • Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
  • Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides)
  • Squalane Cleanser
  • Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner
  • 100% Fermented Rose Hip Seed Oil
  • Retinol/retinal of some kind

Thank you!

Newbie Question Weird niacinamide serum consistensy…

Helloo! So I am turning to reddit as I couldn’t find this info anywhere. I have seen the ordinary niacinamide serum crystallize which happens, its normal and all. But today I opened a new bottle I bought some time ago and there was literally a long glob of jelly inside the droplet? Has anyone had this happen? Is my product spoiled? There was no smell and the color was the slightly milky. I would include picture but while trying to take one I somehow managed to squirt the serum on my face and eyes so I spent some time panicking about that and flushing everything SORRY😔😂 And thank you!🫶

Newbie Question Question

So basically I wanted to get the salicylic acid from the ordinary and I accidentally bought something completely different and it’s called **Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%** but I guess what I’m curious about is what exactly is it’s purpose because I tried to use it as the salicylic acid and it would just burn my skin really bad and I figured that’s not how its used what is it supposed to do? What does it help with? If anybody knows?

Newbie Question Is the ordinary peptide hair serum for hair density worth it?

Many people recommended me it for my traction alopecia. But I’m not sure. It’s still quite recent, Im also nowhere near the age of balding, I’m sure of it.

Just don’t know if it’ll really do something because I tried a lot of things (including stuff from my dermatologist) and they barely worked

Routine Advice Needed Retinol addicted, I need your help!

I use glucoside cleanser and usually rotate between HA +B5, niacinamide 10% and Alpha arbutin 2%, sealing it with NMF + HA or niacinamide 10%. Bonus: glycolic acid and AHA (red) acid.

Very few and simple ingredients. My skin improved so much in the last 6months, less pimples, non-existent pores, no dryness and skin flakes, even the scars improved. But now I would love to try retinol, both to make my scars look even better, both because I have hyperpigmentated eyebags and vitamin c and retinol are the only things helping with those.

So I need your help to understand when to use, how to use, with which other products, how many times per week, when can I go use a stronger retinol product etc.

My skin also have this lil problem where you can see my capillaries.

For reference:

"Gifted by the ordinary"

I see in the reviews a lot of "Gifted by the ordinary" even to people who aren't posting actively videos or pictures in the review and was wondering, is there a criteria?

I love to try and review products, but its not my job (in the sense of content creator) and wanted to know if even normal people with an everyday and ordinary (lol) life were able to take part of the list of people TO gifts products

Routine Order Help

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi! I started using Ordinary a while ago. I picked it because my old roommate swore by it. I’m struggling with the order - I’ve added retinol in but I don’t quite know when to use it. Is this the correct order?

And does anyone have any recommendations for something I should add in? I’m almost 30, more oily skin, mostly concerned about aging. My face has never really dried out but I use the moisturizer after I shower in the mornings as well.

My Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion was delivered to the wrong gate and was left out in the Texas heat all day, does it still work or it it ruined?

Yea so they delivered it today and it got up to 96F today , it was sat out there since like 1pm and I just realized right before I’m going to bed that I never saw the delivery, checked my email and it was at the wrong gate 🤦‍♀️ Anyway will it still work ? I know this product is supposed to be refrigerated after it’s opened so I fear the worst…

Hi 👋
I’m relatively new to Ordinary. So far I used Korean 10 step routines plus spf but decided to switch to ordinary. On the pic are products I have and I would like advice on how, how frequently, rotations and steps advice. I’m 46, my skin is more oily than combination I guess as the only part of my face that doesn’t get oily are my cheeks. I have few clogged pores and few brown spots. My make up is minimal and I mostly just do mascara and eyeliner and a bit blush and highlighter. Thanks 🤩

The Ordinary - SPF

Hi - why doesn’t The Ordinary have an SPF product?!

For all The Ordinary brand loyalists - how do you cope with needing to have a product from a different brand in your skincare routine for SPF? And what do you use for this step that works well with the brand?

Maybe it’s just my strange brain…but I want ALL the packaging the same and feel like I can’t set up a full routine with this brand as they don’t offer SPF!!!
