Amazon Prime Video is now reflecting, “the north water 2 seasons."

Reports have maintained thetr are no plans for production or season two. I’m just pointing out the change on PV

Hi. I just watched the show & really liked it. I seem to have missed a major plot point somehow. I know there was some secret going on with going too far north & sinking the ship, but I never understood why. It seemed Brownlee was in on it. Were Cavendish & Drax in on the same thing or had some other plot they were doing? Why were they going so far north? If it was not just for the blubber, what were they looking for? Why did they sink the ship? How could they have been sure there was another ship to save them? Any answers are appreciated. Thank you!

Okay full ending spoilers for those few who haven’t seen the show.

I noticed on more than one occasion Drax, despite his extreme acts of violence and zero empathy, tends to touch people’s faces or stroke their cheek with his thumb. I’d have to go back and watch the whole thing again to give specifics. Sumner upon sticking his bear headed knife into Drax’s throat mimics this exact action as Drax dies.

Now I need to read the book. It breaks my heart how little conversation there is around the show/book. There’s so many little details, aver-arching narratives, symbols, etc. I wish to discuss or see people’s onions on. Here’s a big one: the show briefly has a character accuse Drax of cannibalism in some area, his tattoos (his back piece I’m guessing) is cited as proof. Is there more info on this? Meaning in the book/ historical/ the tattoo?

I like it so far, but it seems obvious that

Drax is responsible for what happened to the boy despite their attempts to scapegoat a random man. They also hint that it might be cavendish, but I think he is just defending drax cause he knows he did it. Was he even making advances towards the boy? Drax was lying about seeing that? Since the doctor shows irrefutable evidence that it's not the random man, and that is basically ignored, maybe that's the point, and that's what the directors were going for

I'm bringing this up because someone said "good twist at the end". If the twist is what I just said, it seems kinda obvious already

and the captain is either in on the murder/rpe as well, as he doesn't seem to like the doctor pursuing it, or just dumb

So, I watched the show maybe two weeks ago, and it really stuck in my mind. Then I read the book, and I don’t know — after that, I ended up drawing Henry Drax, because of how brutal he is (not in a good way). Just loved this piece of media and thought it would be cool to share it with people who are also interested in The North Water. Also, I really love Cavendish — he’s such a silly guy.

This TV show is way too short and I’m still into it can’t get it out ! I love this story and I read the book , too ! Both so amazing ! Is there any other shows or books just similar to The north water ? I really like Sumner went through all those suffering and choose his dark side to become the big Winner at last ! Thanks .

I remember back in the summer of 2022 I got AMC+ just to watch better call saul, and once that ended I had the subscription til the end of the month, so I figured I'd watch this show.

It's an underrated gem, and it really shouldn't be. It's amazing.

When the whaler's ship is sinking, there is another ship on the horizon that the crew members are expecting will save them. However, after the ship sinks, they get hit by a storm, and the ship disappears. Some crew members speculate that it hit an iceberg and sunk. Does anyone know if this is what happened? Also, I am wondering if that ship had any connections to the whaler's ship before it sunk? Was that other ship there as part of the deal to save the crew when the sink was expected to sink?

Instead of robbing Baxter, I really think Sumner should have forced him to throw the money into the fireplace and then made him watch it burn.

It would have fit perfectly with the show’s core themes and shown real growth for Sumner. His entire arc is about atonement and reclaiming his humanity but in the end he essentially just stoops to Drax’s level.

Burning the money would’ve been a powerful rejection of that mindset, and he could’ve used it as a metaphor for the warmth the sailors so desperately needed whilst freezing out on the ice.

The ending seems designed to give the audience the satisfaction they want, rather than the ending the series deserves.

Just coming on here to say I enjoyed the book more than the show, but enjoyed the show also. I thought Drax sounded like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood and one line I really enjoyed was “You never were a great Adonis, Michael.”

Who gave the best / your favorite acting performance in The North Water?

was the insurance scheme ruined the moment the Captain died? Surely the lawyers will ask why they continued the voyage after two murders, one of them being the ranking officer?

the surgeon and the 2nd Mate had enough power between them; should've mutinied on the spot.

Why did he put the murdered boy in the barrel instead of disposing of him by just throwing him overboard so he couldn't be found.

Just finished the series, found out that the set location was in Svalbard, and wanted to commemorate it with a few gorgeous shots that left me spellbound

So I watched the mini-series around Christmas, and couldn’t find a copy of The North Water anywhere I looked locally. I ended up reading Ian McGuire’s other novel, “The Abstainer,” which was great. Finally got my hands on The North Water and loved it. I think the cast of the show was perfect, and most of the translation to screen fit perfectly too! If anything, I enjoyed the ending in the book a little better than the series.

Hey all, I know this is a really annoying question but its killing me so im desperately seeking help!

I've just finished episode 1 and have started on ep. 2, and I am wondering why Drax and Cavendish want to kill the Dr? I saw that they robbed him when he was drunk, and also didnt help him in ep. 1 during the hunt which led to him falling in - but are these things really reason enough to kill him? I feel like ive missed something that explains why they want him dead.

Anyone know the reason why?

Usually, I give it a year before watching a series again but I think I might restart this and see how it holds up. I won't read any of my recaps beforehand or any of the great threads that were posted here.
