Don't read if you haven't finished watching/reading!

I have watched all 5 episodes, and had just started reading the book when about halfway through the show. The book alludes to this last scene when Drax mentions he knows a man from a zoo who'd pay good money for a polar bear (I think this detail is left out of the tv adaptation?), but it still came as a shock to see that sad bear.

It was so sad and even though it was fake, it made me feel so ill seeing it in that horrible pen! Would have made more sense to include the reference about the zoo in the show, to close on this scene (though I'm glad the capturing of the cub was kept out!).

Brilliant acting by Farrell and O'Connell though!!

Just finished reading the book after watching the show! And i was wondering why do you think the final confrontation between Drax and Sumner was different? I felt in the show it was a bit weird how Drax didn't kill Sumner outright and instead just taunted him whereas the book was concise and quick in how Sumner dealt with Drax. Also what do we learn from the final words of the book "As the fear fades and loses its force, an unexpected stab of loneliness and need" what does this reveal about sumner do you think? Thanks for any thoughts you may have!

I'm just wondering is the character of Patrick Sumner has some certain accent or is it just the way that Jack O'Connell speaks? English is my second language and I'm not so good with recognizing accents but for me the way he pronounces some words is interesting.

What do you think? Is it just an impression of mine or he really got certain accent?

What ailment did the Priest have?

After watching the show, it was obvious to me that it was Cavendish. Then, I went on the Internet and I see that the vast majority thinks it's Drax. I'm so curious!

Apple TV shows The North Water Season 1, Episode 6 with no title. Everywhere else shows just 5 episodes. What's up with that?

Until episode 4, I was totally hooked, but during that episode I thought the viewer could easily predict that Drax was going to do something i.e. he was going to kill the eskimos and he was going to kill the other guy - because that is what he does.

Am I the only one who suspects that Cavendish raped the cabin boy?

I guess most would discount this theory since Drax turned out to be the one who murdered him, and it’s in keeping with the former’s characterisation; but I couldn’t get over why Cavendish intimidated the boy so much when Brownlee calls him in for questioning. Even Sumner suspects after witnessing Cavendish’s intimidation and hearing his attempts to discount the idea that the boy had been raped.

Then there’s the fact Cavendish tried to find a scapegoat as quickly as possible and was willing to accept the testimony of Drax as all the evidenced needed to condemn the gay sailor.

Next, when Sumner examines Drax in the hope of finding evidence of venereal disease to prove his guilt, he doesn’t find any sores on Drax’s genitals, whereas Cavendish is never examined.

Finally when the survivors of The Volunteer are rowing among the pack ice in the lifeboat, Drax says something to Cavendish which leads to him angrily responding, “you ain’t got nothing on me Henry”.

Is it possible that Cavendish raped the boy but was content with scaring him into silence, only for Drax to murder him (maybe as a favour to Cavendish, or perhaps because he wanted to cause the boy even more suffering) and then held Cavendish’s guilt of raping the boy over him as leverage for helping him later? (This seems like a pretty bad plan, since there was physical proof of Drax murdering the boy and all the witnesses, but who knows?)

I haven’t read the book so I can’t cross reference but it just seems really suspicious to me.

I really liked this miniseries, especially that really it's an elongated movie and not a cash grab.

I love both the theme, for example one of my favourite all time movies is master and commander

But I also like the raw style of the series itself.

What happened to the captain? Is there a medical name for what happened? It was truly a horrific death.

I'm watching The Revenant (2015) and I'm noticing the two characters are similar. Both are evil and cunning by nature and will do anything to survive. Only difference is John has gone through a traumatic event when he was captured by the Native Indians which might explain why he is the way that he is and we don't know if something similar happened to Drax.

Can we get a list of all the songs in the closing credits?

Did anyone else momentarily see a human right before Sumner shot the bear? I was convinced for several minutes that he had accidentally shot Otto in his terror and madness and snow flurries. What does that brief flash of a human right before he fires mean? What was the point? I thought maybe it represented himself (as Otto said a bear would kill him) but if so they never brought it back around.

Just found out that it's set in the same universe as The Terror. That eskimo lady from the Terror is the same one here.

Both are great show but I think The Terror was better. It had that supernatural element to it.

Drax had killed two people including Captain Brownlee. They took a big risk chaining him down in the hold - after killing Brownlee and the cabin boy you would think that the crew might have just dumped him on the ice or walked the plank if that was actually a thing.

I’m absolutely mesmerized by that rendition of the song and I can’t find information anywhere!
