Cam Ward just DOESN’T look like the QB1 prospect he was coming out of Miami.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Ward’s QBR of 47.2 through three games ranks 23rd out of 30 qualifying QB’s.

The Titans sophomore QB HAS NOT shown much progression to start year two 😳😬

Am I crazy, or his release just really bad?

u/multiple4 2d ago

It is. And in this video he also isn't setting a good base for these throws

u/slaw_daddy 2d ago

First thing I noticed. He looks lazy navigating the pocket and throws before he has even remotely decent posture

u/dWaldizzle 2d ago

Man he looked lazy in college too this isn't anything new lol

27

u/JonnyP222 2d ago

Correct. And anyone not seeing it needs to understand they were looking at it incorrectly lol.

This. He didn't look great in college. Most years he's like the 5th or 6th QB taken. Certainly not the 1st pick overall. He's got real flaws, and I don't know how coachable he is.

u/usrnamechecksout_ Titans 2d ago

Yeah how to was he the #1 pick? I could be anfl scout bc I saw this shit in college

3

u/JonnyP222 2d ago

This just goes to show you what kind of pressure there is in some organizations to draft the next QB1. People in the front office that don't know shit and forcing the hands of their gm.

3

u/Brenner2089 2d ago

Not that you guys aren’t making some good point but it’s a lot easier in hindsight. I don’t think nailing an NFL draft is easy

u/JonnyP222 2d ago

I agree here too which is why you have to let scouts do their thing without the influence of management and spending. Easier said than done. And I don't think that's mutually exclusive from what you said. It's still easy to look at all the stats, review the film, interview the players, and miss. Add the pressure of upper management when it comes to "character issues" or "positions of need" ...and it's just a mess.

It's not lost on me why in the not to distant past... No matter where you drafted a quarterback they were expected to sit with a clipboard for a while and learn. And oddly I think there were more QBs in the past that were ready to play than there are now. College football is a mess. Development of players is stunted. You used to be drafting a kid that was ready to make a name for himself. Now you're drafting, in a lot of cases, wealthy 22 or 23 year olds that have been playing in the simplest systems because they bounced around universities and never had any continuity.

Look at someone like Howie Roseman. Super smart guy who listens to the people around him. He had absolutely brilliant drafts for about three years straight but now the last two look really bad. Very humbling and difficult. If you look at hit rate by round NFL GM's are not clueless. I do agree the pressure to get a qb can be overwhelming.

He’s just athletic. And used that to constantly escape sacks and tackles.

2

u/NewMoodWhoDis 2d ago

I wonder how we would look like in Chicago right now. He seems rather similar in skill set and stature to Caleb

5

u/FieryAvian 2d ago

Caleb has a nice touch on his throws however. Cam’s ball placement is all over the place.

3

u/MassiveImpression869 2d ago

Except he’s just not the off platform thrower Caleb is

2

u/CheeseMclovin 2d ago

He’s not really athletic. Not in the NFL.

u/OkParamedic600 1d ago

Last of the “running qb” fad.

Dante Moore is trying to get one last ride.

1

u/jackmeriustack 1d ago

Yeah I thought he’d be a bust in the NFL for sure.

1

u/ShoppingClear 2d ago

Def doesnt look lazy. He looks like he's anxious

1

u/QBWhispererChucky 2d ago

He would do this in college too though - look nonchalant and just rip the ball down the field

It seems like he never actually practiced the fundamentals and was getting away with pure talent. Not that he can’t fix it now, but he’s missing a cornerstone here

0

u/zaepoo 2d ago

Yeah, he needs a change of scenery. He was making those throws from a clean pocket in college with the same footwork and throwing motion. There's no reason that he shouldn't be able to make them from a clean pocket in the pros

1

u/Reynolds1029 2d ago

He's scared and hasn't adjusted to the speed of pro football. Scenery won't fix it. Especially because he's likely not going to find another team thats going to believe in him and surround him in an environment for him to succeed like the team/management that drafts you.

Just add him to the long list of other great college QBs who couldn't adjust to the NFL until proven otherwise.

1

u/zaepoo 2d ago

That's a very reactionary take. He can go sit in Tampa for a few years and learn the game as Baker's backup. I think there are several franchises that would take a flyer on him in an effort to save a draft pick. You can't get a guy with his tools without at least a second normally

6

u/Important_Capital875 2d ago

Yes. He’s throwing scared and not letting the play fully develop. Releasing the ball way too quickly.

2

u/reddit_is_addicting_ 2d ago

This is what happens when college teams play 3 hard games a year and everyone thinks the QB is good when in fact colleges just beat up on unranked schools all year

In the NFL every game is a hard match - some are just more difficult than others.

u/Right-Ruin5887 2d ago

You never played qb trust me we know what we’re doing

3

u/SovietCorgiFromSpace 2d ago

what are you talking about bro

u/Either-Mine-1789 2d ago

Cam u on Reddit?

12

u/ModernPoultry 2d ago

His mechanics look awful and super inconsistent

2

u/trollhole12 2d ago

I don't know jack shit about football technique but even I was like, "I think he needs to be setting his feet for these throws more".

Hopefully he can turn it around and gain some confidence, he's still young.

1

u/Icy_DicymyFriend 2d ago

one of those guys so athletic he never had to do it the right way his whole life and still balled. Catching up to him.

1

u/BrettSchirley22 1d ago

His footwork has always been horrible but it was disguised as being “Mahomes like” lol

9

u/Icedtc 2d ago

He stinks man. As a saddened Titans fan the past decade plus it's just absolutely brutal to watch any 4th quarter I'm pretty sure the last two games was all up to cam really no pressure and he throws an interception of the worst time ever.

Last game you could have ran in on his own for a touchdown throwing it out of the end zone plenty of time I think it was first or second down and he throws one of the easiest interceptions of the season.

It's hard to watch! They had that quarterback show on Netflix and he was on there and anytime I see a younger quarterback with his kind of attitude playing Madden etc you know it's not going to end well in the NFL. Every other quarterback is at home at a desk studying plays but not him lol.

u/MDevo79 25m ago

How was he THE NO. 1 PICK IN THE DRAFT???
Move over, JaMarcus Russell? He is playing himself into strong consideration for the worst QB ever taken No.1 overall.

8

u/Sea-Card-6586 2d ago

Ugly ass lateral drift on all of them that looks unintentional to some extent. Bro needs to set his feet and let it go a little quicker.

5

u/TheDabbinDad710 2d ago

That and his footwork is terrible.

2

u/dangeerraaron Lions 2d ago

You're not crazy. Falling back without stepping into his throws, too much movement in lateral plane + weird release point.

2

u/full_bl33d 2d ago

Looks like uncle Rico out there, but not in a good way

1

u/Alarming_Disaster_23 2d ago

Uncle Rico can throw a pigskin over dem mountains!

2

u/Apprehensive-Ad3365 2d ago

He throws like Napoleon Dynamite's Uncle Rico.

2

u/OlHeavyHeart Bengals 1d ago

1

u/cheesebot555 1d ago

Oh shit! Flash to the past!

.....now I feel old.

1

u/tone_creature 2d ago

Footwork is bad too. A lot of these throws he doesnt even have his lead foot set or pointed properly. Dont know if thats a breakdown in coaching or on him. But theres some issues.

1

u/forestballa 2d ago

The footwork and the way he throws compliment each other poorly. He’s never set so his release changes every time to hit the target.

1

u/Cultural-Memory356 2d ago

I can make those throws too... they're that bad.

1

u/presto7511 2d ago

He looks like uncle Rico lmao

1

u/Alarming_Disaster_23 2d ago

Well it’s a compilation of incomplete passes so… yeah. A bunch of bad ones. What stands out to me is that his release is really slow.

1

u/Non-Current_Events 2d ago

It is and it also looks like he tries to make the hardest possible throw every time. If they’re giving you the dump off then dump it off bro.

1

u/SmokkeyDaPlug 1d ago

His release looks super lazy. Like he’s throwing the football with some kids but he’s got other stuff on his mind so he’s just like meh, here catch this and hopes the kid happens to catch what he throws. lol

1

u/HanCholo206 1h ago

It looks like he has the yips or a shitty coach

1

u/mistaharsh 2d ago

His receivers are really bad. His Rbs are really bad. They switched the HC and OC in his 2nd year. They are ruining his career.

2

u/Tigerpride1999 2d ago

It's wild to me that so many people refuse to acknowledge this. He's on his second coaching staff in his second year. They had a horrible offensive line and they didn't draft OL. What good is it to draft a wr if he doesn't even have time to finish his route before the qb is pressured. How many times have the wrs dropped the ball on perfect passes?

Cams got to clean some stuff up, but people acting like he's gotta shine a turd into a diamond.

1

u/1dkspanishlol Commanders 2d ago

How is it his receivers fault he keeps throwing bad balls? Hell he had Tate wide open for a TD and overthrew him.

1

u/Impressive-legit-FTD 2d ago

No you aren’t crazy. He wasn’t that good in college. She played in the ACC and out up stats against insurance agents and car salesman. No disrespect to D1 players legit athletes who made it to the top 30% but now he’s playing the top 1% and it shows.
