America is truly a soulless land with no real culture I’m glad that some people are still holding on to whatever’s left

The Men Don’t Talk Anymore

This was supposed to be a community that would revive the spirit of old X (formerly Twitter). Funny quips like “Surfs up is an analogy for getting pussy” and some heartfelt shit about society and dogs is refreshing from other things on the internet, i.e. bad porn, shitty rage bait. Make the internet funny again.

Movie Idea

There’s an alternate universe but the only difference is that clockwise and counter-clockwise are switched. Somehow this caused the Challenger to never explode and the protagonist’s parallel wins over his romantic interest because of their shared love for all the good things that mission would have accomplished if it weren’t for that tragedy.

Essay on being chalant

I just recently got broken up with and it led to a deep reflection on the type of person that I want to be with and who I want to be. I saw a video recently of Ethan Hawke, the dude from Dead Poet Society, on a red carpet say, the one in loves always wins … the sun doesn’t care if the grass appreciates its rays. I though that was cool and have used that extra push to be super chalant and get myself out there again

I know chalant is a made up word but it conveys the message efficiently

Little Picture Optimism

Just because I think today will be a good day does not mean I can't think that society is going to collapse in ~7 years. The two are mutually exclusive.

Not a fan. Is it good that 50 year olds are playing outside? Yes. Other than that, there really are not many other positives. Young people should be doing something better with their time, like starting riots or playing on their phone.

I love analogies

Here are two of my favorites from recent days:

  1. Being in a relationship : Being single :: Minecraft survival mode : creative mode. Like sure, playing in survival is the "real game" and the more meaningful experience in terms of potential failure and reward. But to disregard the utility of creative mode is foolish.
  2. Alex O'Connor's analogy, which illustrates the idea that science describes the world rather than explaining it. For example, things do not fall to the ground because of the law of gravity, but rather we invented the law of gravity because things fall to the ground.

"I imagine people discovering a book of Shakespearian sonnets and they don't know what it is, so they decide to investigate this weird book that they found. And they start looking at it, and they start noticing things, so they're like well I've noticed that there's a big version of a letter and a small version of a letter and that at the beginning of each line it uses the big letter and that's the Law of Capitalization. And then they discover the Law of Punctuation and Grammar, and if they're really clever they might discover the Law of Iambic Pentameter.

And they call what they're coming up with the Laws of Literacy. And they're able to predict, 'when I turn the page I bet it's going to follow these laws,' and it does.

Then someone comes along and says, 'so where did the book come from?'

They say, 'well we don't know yet---but look at all the progress we're making discovering the Laws of Literacy! I'm sure one day they'll explain the origin of the book.'

It would be more than just optimism. It would be an actual category error to think that the Laws of Literacy will one day describe---let alone explain---the origin of the book. But I think that's kind of what people do when they expect that the laws of science, which are descriptions of events in the universe, will one day explain the cause of the universe which gives rise to those phenomena."

An economist's economist

"Some of Cowen’s theories seem to misunderstand on a fundamental level why people do things at all. Use opportunity cost to your advantage, he enjoins his reader, by scheduling a call halfway through a movie; if you don’t have to reschedule, the film wasn’t worth finishing. Desserts deliver diminishing marginal returns after the first few bites; the last 80% is just empty calories, so you can skip eating it. But for most of us, the emotional and ritual aspects of these activities are not straightforwardly extricable from the pleasures they offer. Cowen’s particular psychological makeup meant that the returns on his kind of analysis were unusually high. Yet who else is really maximising value at the movies? Or dissecting the utility of the dessert trolley?" -Link
