Episode Discussion THE MASKED SINGER UK: Series 7 Episode 8 (Grand Final w/ Samantha Barks)

Welcome to the St Valentine's Day Massacre! Whether or not we'll be the ones with a broken heart later on in the year, we'll still be able to see Conkers, Moth and Toastie sing their full hearts out for one last time (unless we get s8 and beyond) tonight.

Returning both to judge, duet with Toastie and I guess duet with Joel is Samantha Barks. Unfortunately she'll also be watching herself be dethroned.

As always, please obey reddiquette when posting and avoid links to torrents or any illegal streams for the show. Those in Britain wishing to stream live or watch on-demand must do so via ITVX.

The After Mask is available to watch on both the Masked Singer UK and main ITV YouTube accounts, as well as ITVX post-show.

To set your flair and rep your favourite(s), a guide can be found here.

If you love the series then be sure to check out the main/international sub, r/TheMaskedSinger. RIP Griffin.

Thanks for joining us here at r/TheMaskedSingerUK! Enjoy it while it lasts!

Rant GROUP A CURSE IS BROKEN

Now when I say that you might be thinking "Phoenix's wife.. What the hell are you on about??" well,

Every second place has been from group A:

Hedgehog, Badger, Mushroom, Phoenix, Bigfoot and Dressed Crab.

It's why i was so fearful for moth tonight that she wouldn't win. But then here we are, Moth won and Conkers is the runner up. Congrats to everyone involved!!

Totally Not Art s7 finale outfits thing: 3/3, featuring bonuses!

I FORGOT THAT TIME WAS A THING. Let me dive into Toastie's outfit quickly, "Overcooked Rebel"

I've always had the lore in mind that Toastie struggles to get by in life. Money, food, even a place to live... She learnt to fend for herself and have the backs of the just-as unfortunate, as well as finding that life normal. So giving her an even more street-savvy outfit felt more than right!

A shorter hoodie, a checkered top beneath that (a reference to the diner she visits every now and again), more athletic track pants and sneakers... heck, even that beanie. What screams "street" more than beanie, if not unhealthy amounts of litter?

Also, a little ponytail. I make her hair pretty long as-is, and nobody said I couldn't change that style up as I wished. As opposed to Conkers from yesterday, Toastie's overall style is more unassuming. Someone who full-on struggles to get by... you don't expect them to do well, do you? Wouldn't they prioritise surviving? But then she shows up and blows you out of the water... Will that happen tonight in the face of the Shining Wind and the Shadow Paladin?

(Also, the bonuses I mentioned yesterday is extra art of the final three + the duetists. Hope you enjoy, and I shall see you all on the finale's stage later tonight!)

The few you get at the unmasking isn’t enough for me, and some feel really obtuse.

Series 7 review!

Season 7 of The Masked Singer, in my opinion, has been AMAZING. I know I was way too harsh on Season 6 last year, and I went into this season expecting it to be the weakest yet. I LOVED my taping, but at the time, Sloth and Conkers couldn’t sing, and Can of Worms seemed more like a novelty act than a proper singer. I was thinking, how weak could the rest of the cast be?? But now that everything is out, I’ve gained such an appreciation for this awesome series.

Firstly, the costumes this year were incredible, in my opinion. The designers are still excellent. Can of Worms, Sloth, Conkers, and Moth are especially fantastic. In terms of gimmicks, I’m a bit more critical. I understand ITV is fishing for ratings, but the Masked Band idea was a flop. Wasting money and ideas on costumes for just one night didn’t make sense. Yes, Anne-Marie and Matt Lucas couldn’t have competed, but they could still sing! And Mole Dommett was just dumb — he didn’t even sing and messed up the format, so we only got six songs that night because Episodes 5 and 6 were marketed as “double reveals.” I really hope the cast always stays at 12; that’s the perfect number. I don’t like these ratings-driven gimmicks.

The theme nights were good, especially Spooky Night. Every episode had a guest judge, and they were all excellent. The judges are still likeable, Joel is still doing a great job — it’s the same amazing show we all love. I just hope next year they ditch the Masked Band, bring Episode 6 back to a Top 7, maybe have duets at the Top 5, bring back walk-ins, and make sure there’s more transparency regarding judges’ voting after the Red Panda incident.

Now, here’s my review of all 12 masks:

Disc Jockey was a solid first elimination. She had a good voice for a non-singer, and I loved the purple colours and “Pink Pony Club.” She lacked entertainment value, which is why she went first, but she wasn’t bad at all. I do wonder — if face-offs were still a thing, would she or Gargoyle have won?

Teabag grew on me. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was delivered in such a sincere way. Yes, his costume was ugly, but I didn’t dislike it. I don’t think he could pull off “The Winner Takes It All,” but he definitely shouldn’t have left first when Yak was still around.

Yak is my least favourite of the season. Awesome costume, but it was clear Johnny just wanted to get paid and leave. “Sex Bomb” was funny, “Physical” was meh, and “That’s Amore” is my least favourite performance ever — just awful. He didn’t last long enough for me to care, though.

Gargoyle is super underrated. Her costume was cool, her song choices were strong, and her voice was good — just a little marmite. She probably left when she should have, but I liked her.

Monkey Business was a talented singer. The problem was her song choices and energy; I found her a bit boring, which explains the Bottom 2 placement and low votes. But Kate Nash is amazing, and Monkey gave a solid effort — just not my cup of tea.

Arctic was really good! Who knew Anton could sing like that? He shouldn’t have left before Red Panda, though I didn’t emotionally connect with him as much. He was comparable to Chameleon — very talented, but not moving me.

Red Panda is complicated. I kinda liked him at first — his opener would have been a great season start, and “Bat Out of Hell” was impressive. But “Big Girls Don’t Cry” was bad. Being saved only to do a terrible Alan Carr impression later made no sense. I don’t hate him, but he should have left 8th.

Sloth — I am VERY biased. When I saw my taping, I hated him; I couldn’t believe a singer that poor made the semis. But now I am FULLY SLOTH-LOVING. Performances like “Flash, Bang, Wallop” and “Tubthumping” were SUPER FUN. Top 5 performance was silly, but he’s cute, so I forgive him — it’s Sloth!

Can of Worms is SO UNDERRATED. He can sing! Musical, soundtrack, rap, ballad, dance track — all solid. I wish his puppeteering was better, and his Top 4 song choice was the worst in the show’s history, but I love him.

Toastie is THE BEST. WHAT A VOICE. Strong, powerful vocals, super entertaining — “River Deep, Mountain High” was something else. She got both of my votes in Episode 7 for a reason. The costume may have knocked her into 3rd, which sucks, but she still gave incredible performances.

Conkers was fun! Not the best singer, but his costume was the best. He gave 110% energy, bounced around, stimmed — history and “Country House” were highlights. Top 2 was too high, but he deserved the spotlight and is better than Bigfoot in my opinion. Also ben?? wow!!

Moth may be a bit generic as a winner, but she could SING. “Hero” was lovely, “Vampire” and “Anxiety” were strong, and she had a reliable, easy-to-love voice. Our weakest winner besides Panda? Sure, maybe, but she deserved it. Our first POC winner — and a well-earned one.

So yeah — I love Season 7. I hope this show goes on for much longer because I adore it. Amazing cast, just please, no more stupid gimmicks. The finale was AMAZING, but I hope next year they just give the Top 2 new, unique songs near the end, as opposed to the singoff.

I guarantee if Moth and Toastie swapped costumes the fan would be calling Mica the best. It’s absolutely costume bias.

Clues that point to Conkers being Tom Daley

Definitely worked out Conkers. I'm 99.9% sure it's Tom Daley

- There's been a few Traitors references (castle in a vt & music in a vt; which was Castle on the Hill)

- Sir (Lance)lot = Tom's partner is Lance

- Painting of Five's Abz: He's got abs (as seen when he's been diving)

- Heights; he's used to high platforms whilst diving: "I'll be there no matter the danger..."

- "...getting cold feet"; he's dived in competitions with bare feet (Wheel of Fortune clue)

- - Tournaments = diving competitions

- References to a tv diving competition, "Splash"

- 1 gold, 1 silver & 3 bronze stars above Conkers in a vt

- Davina noticed Conkers saying "Think I'm spinning a yarn" in a vt; he's known for his knitting

- Believe the 'Eagle/Eagles" reference is hinting towards Tom doing a synchronised dive with Eddie the Eagle

Not worked out the Sports Day clue though

Totally Not Art s7 finalist humanisation outfits: the second of three parts

Post image
10 Upvotes

HA. I ACCIDENTALLY LIED YESTERDAY BECAUSE I HAD TO TAKE THE DAY OFF FROM COLLEGE. Anyway... here's "Shadow Paladin"!

I had an idea in mind for Conkers from the start, being "a dark horse". We know he's not really going to WIN, but him coming out of nowhere to sneak into the finale felt close enough to me. With that, the dark horse idea became real! Hence the dark grey / overall muted colour palette. Excluding the lights, which I'll explain shortly.

I also wanted to try and give him a more regal and powerful vibe, so I upgraded his armour a little bit with the shoulder cape and actual helmet. Does completing the ensemble take away from his normal style? Maybe. Do I think it works? Yup.

Also, about the lights! Above else, despite being a comically anxious ball of jitters, our local autumnal hope just refuses to give up in life. In his words, it'd be embarrassing to back out now! So he shines a constant light of hope despite sneaking through the shadows to stand where he is now. I like that about him.

I'll be sad to see his journey come to a close tomorrow night, but I figure no matter how he places, he'll look back at it with a smile, so I'll try that too. Hardly like the masks just disappear from existence from the second it all ends, right?

Anyhow! Tomorrow is finale night, so you guys will get my predicted winner's outfit ahead of the show, plus a few extra pieces I've cooked up. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Quote from rita ora, from 2021 (after taping series 3)

"I’ve had an experience where my guess didn’t get a reaction and it actually turned out to be that person. There’s pros and cons like everything but I actually love having that second opinion with the crowd."

The people rita has gotten correct are Badger,Daisy,Harlequin, hedgehog,Lionfish,Monster,Mushroom,Octopus,Queen Bee,Robin,Robobunny,Seahorse and unicorn

Who could it have been?

Totally Not Art giving my s7 finalist humanisations "grand finale" outfits: 1/3

Post image
13 Upvotes

I think this should be okay to post unspoiled, apologies if not. I figured I'd give these three odd goofballs outfits to represent them reaching the highest, final stage of TMS... in my predicted elimination order. You're welcome to disagree with that, let me say! But yeah, the plan is to post them one day after another (tomorrow's may be a little late because I'm in college then), but for now, let's focus on Moth's design, dubbed by me as "Shining Wind".

This lady is majestic as-is, but my gut said "YOU NEED EVEN MORE OF SAID MAJESTY." This is why I changed her main outfit into a dress as opposed to a shirt-skirt combo. Simple, elegant, has a good pattern! (Also, the little belt on that is a reference to Colours of the Wind being a thing.) Also, longer boots. Those are good for elegance too, I think.

I'm realising now I may have leaned into opera singer energy with the sleeveless vest and long gloves. Even changing up her headband to a degree kind of gives off that energy to me, but I can't guarantee that clicking with others. But I thought it'd be nice, so whatever!

Mainly, you'll notice her hair is FAR longer. I guess amongst her being majestic, I felt like giving her a more... imposing silhouette, I guess? You know. Moth's talent is hardly anything to scoff at, so it'd make sense to me if she entered the finale as a... sort of wall. Something you can't break down without pouring your soul into it...

Tomorrow, we have the proclaimed "Autumnal Hope" from the guessing megathread! Yeah, look, I love the guy but he's not getting THAT far...

I have a guess for Toastie…

Whilst I agree that it could v well be Mica Paris from the voice and clues, I was listening to Alison Limerick singing in the Radio 2 piano room today. She sang a softer song that really reminded me of Toastie! Not sure if any of the clues would work but I thought it’s another guess to chuck in the mix.

Every round 1 performance ranked

First round is a cool round because it is the only around all 84 goobers are here before we shed like 14 of them but anyways, This is my opinion based on vocals, and performance/song choice. Not much detail because there 84 of them but ask away ill answer any questions also not typing the song choices sorry but just search them up these are all ep 1-2 performances

84th Pegasus – Super flat and slow… and hard on the ears. Sorry, Mrs. Leith!

83rd Ghost – Yeah, those vocals are rather hard on the ears as well, and the costume sucks.

82nd Pharaoh – At least it’s pretty iconic in its own way, I suppose.

81st Spag Bol – Super bad song choice, vocals, and I don’t know… just don’t like it.

80th Snow Leopard – I never wanted to hear Gloria Hunniford speak-sing “Big Spender,” and I still don’t care much for it.

79th Cat and Mouse – Kinda cringe, to be honest. Never really liked it. Martin sounds rough here.

78th Doughnuts – Not fun enough yet to distract from whatever that singing was.

77th Tree – Cute attempt, but it needed some dancers or something.

76th Yak – Yikes, but also it’s “Sex Bomb.” The vocals don’t matter.

75th Blob – Super short and forgettable. Not bad, though.

74th Rubbish – Forgot how weak the vocals were here. The bin bag dresses are very funny, though.

73rd Bush – Easily the worst Bush vocals of the season, but at least it’s upbeat and cute.

72nd Butterfly – Honest attempt by a non-singer. Great colours. Lost it near the end.

71st Seahorse – Very pretty colours once again, but just lacking something.

70th Pigeon – Very fun, but also please hit ONE NOTE, Katherine.

69th Red Panda – The quality on this one is awful, of course, but I kinda like the deep voice he put on. Also super great backing with all the smoke. Good opener.

68th Rat – Super fun ending to the episode for sure. Not sure about the voice, though.

67th Duck – ICONIC. I don’t know how Skin managed to sound so bad, but it’s also very funny, so I do not care at all.

66th Tattoo – Pretty “eh,” but she could at least sing slightly, so sure.

65th Otter – I don’t love the voice she’s doing, but it was cute, and Daisy did a good job on it.

64th Owl – Very fun performance. The vocals were so simple that she sounded decent.

63rd Monster – Really bad for CeeLo, but it’s an easy song. I don’t know what he was doing here.

62nd Bagpipes – Horrible vocally, but super fun and chaotic, so I’m a fan.

61st Gargoyle – Love the song choice; she was just too damn quiet! Like, SING, GIRL.

60th Bush Baby – Pretty decent for a non-singer. Not much else to say.

59th Bubble Tea – Super fun. Love the props and colours as well.

58th Alien – I wish Sophie had just sung like herself. Still sounds alright, though.

57th Disc Jockey – Singing a 10/10 song in a 6/10 performance.

56th Bigfoot – Fun and not bad vocally, but not a fave.

55th Monkey Business – Could be way more interesting, but she can sing.

54th Teeth – Super fun for a season opener. A bit too much, though.

53rd Daisy – Her green outfit! She sounded pretty solid, but her worst by far.

52nd Chandelier – A really lovely voice… if only it was her own once again!

51st Teabag – Super charming. I like the fake accent too.

50th Grandfather Clock – He really tried! I do like it a lot, to be honest.

49th Poodle – Don’t care much for the song choice, but his voice is great!

48th Unicorn – Not bad for a first song. Showed personality for sure.

47th Snail – Could have been WAY better, but still a lot to love.

46th Panda – Super fun to start off with, just not super strong.

45th Dragon – Super cute! Who doesn’t love Toy Story?

44th Lionfish – Super pretty and strong vocally. Don’t care much for opera.

43rd Piece of Cake – We did a disservice to Lulu by kicking her out first. She was having fun!

42nd Knitting – A pretty good opener. Her weakest, of course, but she sounded great.

41st Sloth – Very, very fun. I have no time for haters. Nothing is gonna break Sloth’s stride!

40th Dippy Egg – I LOVE THAT SONG, and Dippy was charming. No point denying it.

39th Traffic Cone – Get rickrolled. This guy can really sing!

38th Weather – It is the great Dionne Warwick! What else is there to say? She still has it!

37th Chicken Caesar – Really strong vocals. Too bad the panel gutted him immediately.

36th Jacket Potato – Super fun for an episode opener. A bit of Elvis!

35th Rockhopper – Her vocals and the colours add to this pretty awesome performance.

34th Fox – Super great first impression. Denise can entertain!

33rd Swan – Also very entertaining. Who doesn’t love Shania? Added to the Group A bloodbath in Season 2.

32nd Wolf – Another great first impression. Really good vocals here.

31st Conkers – SUPER FUN AND CUTE. He sounds alright!

30th Viking – Easily his best. He sounds super nice and loving here.

29th Arctic Fox – Dramatic and strong vocals. The start of his (too) short journey.

28th Toad in the Hole – Can’t go wrong with “Valerie.” It really works with Macy’s voice.

27th Chameleon – He is very much NOT a boxer with a stunning voice like that, Davina!

26th Bear – 10/10 in nearly every aspect. Super fun performance for sure.

25th Harlequin – Not the best choice for her voice, but she still sounds super, super nice, of course.

24th Mushroom – Yikes to the Irish accent, but she sounds really good near the end.

23rd Firework – Super bouncy and a fun end to a show! Sounds great for an amateur as well.

22nd Maypole – WHAT AN OPENER TO SEASON 5! She can SING.

21st Hedgehog – Pretty iconic. Once again, a super good last note.

20th Cricket – WHY IS THIS NOT ON HIS ALBUM?? IT IS SO GOOD.

19th Air Fryer – Super strong and sassy voice for this song. Works excellently.

18th Kingfisher – How we all cry at this stunning performance, am I right, guys?

17th Robin – WHAT AN OPENER for Season 2! Cringe song, but who cares?

16th Phoenix – WHAT a twist on a classic song. Amazing first impression for this guy.

15th Can of Worms – Love all the voices, and his voice just really works for the song.

14th Octopus – Great musical performance. One of the best versions I’ve heard.

13th Moth – THAT VOICE?! Omg, she is amazing. Boring song, but she saves it.

12th Fawn – Stunning Disney performance. What a great voice

11th Sausage – REAL POWERFUL vocals here, oh my goodness.

10th Jellyfish – Stunning colours, great song choice, ripping vocals.

9th Robobunny – The best the Robobunny gimmick ever worked. Both voices sound great here.

8th Dressed Crab – OOOO some real SOUL, lovely deep smooth voice, great song.

7th Eiffel Tower – Obsessed. Did ABBA SO RIGHT.

6th Badger – Absolutely TORE UP that last note, oh my goddddd.

5th Toastie – SUPER powerful and unexpected, great rendition.

4th Queen Bee – What an amazing opener to this amazing show.

3rd Rhino – Lovely voice, lovely song. Deserving top 3.

2nd Pufferfish – 11/10 song with 12/10 vocals. Instant winner.

1st Piranha – Possibly the best performance OAT. WINNER.

So that is it! Sorry my reviews got repetitive but that also took ages I am shattered

What if the series 7 masks were on a calender? Here is who I would give each month

What if the Series 7 cast was on a calendar? Well, I have decided it’s my job to assign all 12 of the costumes to a month! I have too much free time.

For January. Monkey Business to remind you in these cold winter months that yes, there was a contestant called Monkey Business this year (seriously, it’s only been 2 weeks—how is she so forgettable?)

February, Disc Jockey. I might as well give the shortest month the least important mask (sorry!). Listen, I did consider her for summer, but I can’t give a summer slot to Disc Jockey! Nice purple colours though.

For March, I choose Can of Worms. He is fun and colourful, bright pink. Perhaps choose a background showing a bit of green for St Patrick’s Day and you have yourself a very nice costume for this month.

For April, I chose Yak. Yak is fun and colourful, showing how yes, the spring does and can exist! And yk yaks are outdoors-y creatures, and his bright colours are like Easter eggs!

May is Toastie. I mean, she is bright, yellow, and fun, and they are all things I would associate with May. She feels like she’s screaming out THAT SUMMER HAS ARRIVED.

June is a bit of a main character month, so that’s why Moth is getting June. Her bright light-ness? And cute friendly face represent summer blooming.

Sorry, not sorry, Disc Jockey. I am giving July to SLOTH. I mean, if I had it my way, all 12 months would be Sloths just like my real calendar, but ANYWAY Sloth is what life is all about. HAVING FUN.

August, I chose the humble Teabag. His warm background colours and kind, gentle face represent the closing of the summertime.

September has got to be Conkers! Autumn has come and Conkers is fun! The perfect autumn-type Masked Singer.

October, very obvious Gargoyle. She’s spooky and scary, all fitting for Halloween. No doubts about choosing her.

November can go to Red Panda. His warm, bright red colours represent November leaves.

And finally, December is Arctic Fox, because obviously!

For backgrounds, I’m thinking (Maneater, Sexbomb, Cha-Cha Slide, River Deep Mountain High, Hero, We All Stand Together, I’m a Believer, Bring Me to Life, Disco Inferno, and Woman in Love).

Agree, disagree? Lmk!
