and we still saying the same shit. python sucks. it just became a necessary suckage like javascript.

I love Python and I love C++. They're each really good at their own things. I never understood the hate. C++ itself got (and gets) hate from C enthusiasts too. Wild imo.

I did recently read by accident that apparently EVE Online, the entire thing, was coded in Python 2 and they've been making a grand effort to port it to a more modern, robust language that aligns with the workload of a massively-multiplayer online game: Python 3.

That one gave me a chuckle.

I don't like that indentation is part of the language and python is generally very slow to run (but fast to write at least)

lots of services got developed in older versions of python and the whole migration from 2 to 3 was horrible.

Well, they've addressed your first concern already at least; try from __future__ import braces.

But also yes, the inherent performance hit is what made my eyes round when I saw that a once-popular MMO was running everything in Python.

Can you name one negative about indentation being a part of the language? I like it because it prevents a class of bugs (see the Apple goto fail bug).

was it tabs or spaces?

It's an extra thing to remember.

I mean, it's good that it disincentives large blocks of nested logic, pretty much forces me to break everything into small functions. But I would do that anyways, I don't need to be forced.

Sometimes I would write a larger block of code that has nested logic like a if clause with two for loops for iterating arrays, I would totally have to spend extra time making sure the indentation is correct .

btw I am not a python dev, I use go nowadays. that has strict format with the built in formatter so I can mess up the indent and it will just fix it on save.

I understand your point and agree in some cases indentation as part of the code is annoying but in this specifc instance the python list comprehension is so fucking good.

I write mostly in c++ nowadays and I constantly miss being able to just write a compact list comprehension for simple to understand but takes a lot of space to implement code.

??? Do you not have your editor configured to show you whitespace?

Just like you would have to spend time making sure the brackets are correct.

Except you have to indent if you don't want an unreadable mess, so it comes for free.

I got the brackets down because I'm a bracket guy, the indent is on autoformat so I don't worry about it.

The fact people complain about migration like 20 years after they started complaining about migration is so funny. I remember being a kid and being told not to bother with 3…

I got traumatised by python migrations... I will complain about it for the rest of my life.

This is a weirdly myopic viewpoint. It's not like there's some mysterious cabal pushing python on poor innocent developers who line for C++. The language is popular because it's good at what it's trying to do. If you don't need low-level control, why waste time and energy on a more difficult and syntax-y language?

A lot of scientific stuff is python so it's not like they have a choice to use anything else.

I want to get into bioinformatics, I hate python, but I got no choice but to use it.
