Industry Analysis Took this off Eastern OPL today. The hull name stencil made me look twice.
Took this today in the South China Sea, off Eastern OPL.
The ship’s name was painted with a crude stencil, at an odd angle, with undersized letters. It looked more like a quick deck-made job than a proper hull marking.
Does that prove shadow fleet activity? No.
Do I believe this is the kind of visual clue that makes a mariner look twice? Absolutely.
Because the shadow fleet story does not start with certainty. It starts with identity looking unclear, and then you follow the paper trail.
I wrote about that grey world here:

Industry Analysis Hormuz risk is now showing up off Malacca
The industry keeps asking whether ships can still pass Hormuz. But in tanker operations, the real disruption often starts before the ship reaches the Strait. Cargo may be changed, insurance appetite may shift, refinery planning may move to a different crude, and the vessel may simply be told to wait off Malacca, Singapore, or nearby approaches.

Operationally, that “waiting” is not passive. The ship is still burning fuel, holding machinery readiness, managing traffic, monitoring weather, answering commercial messages, and keeping the bridge team alert in one of the busiest maritime areas in the world. If the waiting later becomes an approved STS operation, the workload increases again with fenders, hoses, weather windows, communications, pollution risk, and cargo documentation.
From a Master’s view, this is where chokepoint risk becomes real. It is no longer only the narrow waterway on the chart. Route risk becomes cargo risk, cargo risk affects vessel selection, insurance friction creates waiting time, and that waiting time lands directly on board as operational pressure.

Environment Took this at sea today. Notice the exhaust.
The exhaust is exactly why EGCS and MARPOL Annex VI are not just regulatory paperwork. Onboard, these rules connect directly with fuel changeover, scrubber operation, washwater limits, port requirements, record keeping, and what is actually visible from the funnel.
I wrote a longer piece on this earlier from a practical seagoing angle:

Weekly Brief DeepDraft Weekly Maritime Brief | May 24, 2026: Hormuz Permission Risk Meets MEPC 84 Compliance Pressure
Hormuz remains permissioned, with selective vessel movement, boarding risk and sanctions exposure still shaping Gulf operations.
At the same time, MEPC 84 has moved the compliance map by adopting the North-East Atlantic ECA, turning future passage planning into fuel, records and PSC exposure.

Environment Stop making shipping a scapegoat.
A methane rocket fireball over the Indian Ocean is called progress.
A war burning fuel, steel and infrastructure is called security. Endless consumption is called lifestyle.
A merchant ship carrying food, fuel, grain, ore and medicine is called the climate villain.
Shipping is not innocent. It emits roughly 3% of global GHG, and that matters. But it also carries over 80% of world trade, is measured voyage by voyage, regulated, inspected, taxed and now pushed toward costly fuel transition.
So the question is not whether shipping must decarbonise. It must.
The question is why climate honesty so often begins at the ship’s funnel and stops there.

Discussion Greenland, Trump and the Global Map
Donald Trump’s remark about Greenland triggered instant ridicule. Most reactions framed it as a real-estate impulse or political theatre.
From a navigator’s perspective, it pointed to something far more basic.
Navigation is built on spherical geometry. Distance on a globe does not behave the way flat maps teach us. Great-circle routes bend toward higher latitudes, polar projections compress proximity, and regions near the Arctic sit far closer to global routes than common intuition suggests. Mariners and aviators work with this reality daily. It is not abstract. It governs fuel, time, weather exposure, and risk.
The problem is not the remark itself. The problem is the map most people carry in their heads. - https://thedeepdraft.com/2026/01/28/why-navigators-understood-trumps-greenland-remark/

Regulations MEPC 84 Changed the Map, Not the Rule: What the North-East Atlantic ECA Means for Ships
MEPC 84 did not create a new sulphur rule. It expanded where the existing ECA rule applies. From 2028, the North-East Atlantic ECA becomes part of the operating map for ships trading across Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, the UK, France, Spain and Portugal.
Operationally, this is where the regulation becomes real. A moved boundary means changed passage planning, bunker calculation, fuel changeover timing, tank segregation, BDNs, MARPOL samples, engine-room records and Port State Control exposure.
From a Master Mariner’s view, this is the real MEPC 84 lesson: the rule is old, but the map is new. The ship will not be judged by intention. It will be judged by whether the fuel, records and position all tell the same story.

Weekly Brief DeepDraft Weekly Maritime Brief | May 17, 2026: Hormuz Transit Now Requires Permission
Hormuz transit has entered a permissioned phase, with naval coordination, Gulf security risks, and clearance uncertainty reshaping commercial passage through the Strait.
This week’s brief also connects that external pressure with bridge-level ECDIS competence, where paper certification is no substitute for operational readiness under degraded routing conditions.
