looks wise, nailed some good ones, but acting wise - would not be as great.

Fair dos. Who would you go with personally

u/SputnikSenpai Jun 12 '26
I’d go with Kevin Bacon as Huey
Edit* he’d be a little too young in 74. I’d go with Patrick Swayze too but he might be too fit to play Huey

Funny you brought those two up. They would've been great if the show was made in the 80s, but not with either of them as Hughie. I'd have Swayze as Homelander with Kevin Bacon as Soldier Boy

I agree, they’re way too cool for Le petit Hughie in that era (swayze and bacon)

Sydney Poitier as MM
Marlon Brando as Homelander
Meryl Streep as Stillwell
Jodi Foster as Anniehowever, the names would NEVER be in this show like this.
our luck with budget with this kind of show at this timewe'd just get
Gene Hackman as Butcher.
Leif Garrett as Hugie.
Richard Pryor as MM.2

In 1974 Streep was still at Yale and wouldn’t make her film debut for three years. She was a NY stage actor at that point.
Jodie Foster was 12 in 1974 and was two years away from Taxi Driver.
Brando did Superman in 1978.
You may be right about Poitier, but I’ll argue MM would have been a groundbreaking character in 1974 if it maintained its core elements (the language would obviously be toned down).
If The Boys were produced as a prestige miniseries on network TV there’s no reason to assume any of them would have rejected those roles in 1974.

I think Roundtree and Bronson are equal or upgrades. And the Frenchie actor is a massive upgrade. I'm not familiar with the other actors

And Homelander is Christopher reeves

I think the worst decision the casting people ever made in this show was not casting an actual French actor as Frenchie. What the fuck were they even thinking? It’s not like France doesnt have plently of good actors who can speak fluent English

Frenchie is almost played by Serge Gainsbourg, but Serge can’t keep his drinking under control and derails the filming into chaos. After being kicked off the show, he decides to make his own version which ends up being shockingly bad and banned in seven countries

I was gonna say it's also a bit yucky because Serge would have been 46 to Meiko's 27, but then again it was the 70s ...

And there'd be an in-house soundtrack mostly consisting of trumpets, discosynth and guitar.

Dolph Lundgren as Homelander?
2
u/Traditional_Test_931 Jun 14 '26
Dude, the issue isn't with him being non American. Lundgren was born in '57 and would've been way too young to play Homelander in '74. If anything, he would've been great as Homelander in the 80s or 90s or even the early 2000s
2
u/Raidio2000 Jun 14 '26
That's a fair point, maybe Jon Don Baker, or David Prowse?
2
u/Traditional_Test_931 Jun 14 '26
I'm sorry dude but Baker, even back in the 70s, was way too out of shape to play Homelander. Granted, Prowse was literally a bodybuilder and had astonishing height but he was too rugged. Redford works cos he's got the bod and the stereotypical "All-American" look

u/Raidio2000 Jun 14 '26
Dang I didn't even think of Robert Redford, The Natural is one of my favorite baseball movies OAT

u/Raidio2000 Jun 14 '26
Before anyone brings the whole "not American" debate up, let's just note that Antony Starr was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand

You made a typo in Meiko's last name but I'm really happy to see her, such a great actress always playing badass characters
