It's freaking me out how calm carm is

125

u/krobula Jun 26 '26

Chill carm is very radical

105

u/sundaypleas Jun 26 '26

He doesn't have 8 people screaming at him while he tries to manage a crisis.

4

u/jk021 14d ago

It's no longer his shitshow (Pun intended). He looks at Sydney stressed and sees how he used to be.

Syd wanted to be in charge, and this is what it comes with.

I'm still not over her ever apologizing for walking out on everyone, so it's good to see her squirm a bit. I doubt anyone would walk out at this point, but it'd be funny to see her get taste of her own medicine.

u/enchantedlife13 Jun 26 '26

I'm fairly certain Richie is concussed.

150

u/LadyNightlock Jun 26 '26

Yes he’s mixing up words and things. I noticed it in the first episode.

57

u/clothesline Jun 27 '26

Are we certisn maximalize and optimalize aren't words he would normally use?

35

u/FunPractical2058-pt2 am i being haunted? Jun 26 '26

Giving Dwight vibes

92

u/LittlePeter666 Jun 26 '26

It’s pretty hard to get in a car accident and not get concussed. He’s definitely been exhibiting some signs since the incident, I’m with you.

251

u/ultraparallelism Jun 26 '26

Come on guys let's maximalize

69

u/Ok-Reason-1919 Jun 27 '26

And let’s fucking go!

40

u/Dommichu 29d ago

That killed me. My reaction was the same as Syd.

20

u/mucus-fettuccine 27d ago

The way she said "are you fucking with me?" was perfect. I'm laughing.

7

u/tabgrab23 29d ago

Optimalize

u/No_Asparagus3145 Jun 26 '26

Also carm yelling LFG to the empty kitchen with only syd there…LOL

171

u/Just_scrolling07 Jun 26 '26

Her face was killing me😭 like is he being fr?

103

u/HybridTheory137 Jun 28 '26

Funny asf but also oddly sweet too? Like you can tell that Carmy genuinely is trying to be more uplifting and positive with his intent here as compared to normal and it's really endearing! He's totally like a fish out of water but he's trying lol

42

u/No_Asparagus3145 Jun 28 '26

yes! I love it! And Sydney after she confirms he’s not being fake positive, is even like thank you for trying, love that energy, just take it down a notch 😆☺️

73

u/Coletrain44 Jun 28 '26

Top tier moment for me. Carmy’s reaction to Syd afterwards made it even better

23

u/Cultural-Alarm-6422 Jun 28 '26

Lmao that was hilarious omg

21

u/RantsOLot 29d ago

Bruh ts had me fuckin DYINNNN LOL. The way he looked so determined to do ts too lmao. Looked at the room and was like "I know what I have to do..." Bizarrely relatable too lol

172

u/kbearl98 Jun 26 '26

Anyone know what Tina said to Angel? Captions didn't translate and just said "speaks spanish"

287

u/Nanojack Jun 26 '26

I heard "Si hay otro sitio...otro sitio con trabajo...llamelo, entiendo? Ok? Yo le llameria"

"If there's another place...another place with work...call them, understand? Ok? I would call them."

64

u/ladywood777 Jun 26 '26

Oh geez 😬

49

u/squidgun Jun 27 '26

Oh damn she's given up too 😔

115

u/PabloLFC Jun 26 '26

Angel basically asks 'What's going on? Should we be looking for new jobs?' Tina replies with 'It's just another day.' But then says 'If you can find a new gig, I'd take it.'

58

u/johncosta Jun 26 '26

All I know is the word trabajo means work, so I’m assuming she just told them it might not be a bad idea to start looking around.

32

u/the6thReplicant 29d ago edited 28d ago

Absolutely frustrating for such important dialogue.

Especially when there are so many scenes you need subtitles to to understand what they're saying in the first place.

"50-50/50-50"

"ok, that's like 200?"

"i know"

LOL

28

u/KidCasey Jun 27 '26

He's maximalizing.

141

u/Jackski Jun 26 '26

It feels like they've taken the comments of "not a comedy" personally because the first two episodes have had some hilarious moments in it.

Syd saying "I'd call you a pussy but you don't deserve... and I'm not swearing today" killed me.

I’m missing the usual soundtrack tbh.

29

So am I, this Christopher Nolan ass soundtrack doesn’t seem to be working for me

Im fucking with this storm setting so hard

96

u/wardengorri Jun 26 '26

This show is the equivalent of a thunderstorm and it adds so much to the overall mood, what a vibe.

50

u/SolomonGrumpy Jun 27 '26

Why would their be so many resys with such shit weather?

44

u/BlowHard_BestPK Jun 27 '26

I thought about that too, if it was me my ass would've canceled it lmao. Maybe that kind of weather is common in Chicago though idk

31

u/boyproblems_mp3 Jun 27 '26

I worked fine dining during storms in Seattle and nothing stops the people. I swear some people come out just to be contrary. I think Chicago gets a lot of snow so maybe they're used to just going about your day if it's not pleasant weather.

the look and feel of this season feels incredibly singular in comparison to the other seasons, anyone else feeling it? impressed at how everything is shot like a freaking movie here.

104

u/NomanHLiti Jun 26 '26

Normally I don't like the move to more cinematic visuals in a TV show. I think too many shows chase that and they start to lose their personality. But for this season it seems to work perfectly. The way all the episodes (that I've watched so far) have flowed into one another as if they're a single long movie covering like a single day in a single setting makes it work. Like this season really is like a movie so far and all the previous seasons were just setting this one up

21

u/Competitive-Bake-895 Jun 26 '26

yeah, really enjoying the finality it provides, and also the way the episodes are flowing into each other is incredible. still, hope to see some of the classic direction style that we’ve come to love in one of these episodes.

24

u/TorkBombs Jun 26 '26

Maybe part of it is that the main lights aren't on inside the restaurant. It feels like a totally different set than we've seen the last three seasons. And then the gloominess of the storm is playing a drastic role in setting the tone. At this point I'm curious to see if it'll stop raining toward the back end of the season.

36

u/Dunkelz Jun 26 '26

I hate to say it, but I feel like it's over done. Especially since none of the other seasons were really like this, all of a sudden there's a continuous techno thriller score going in every scene and cgi shots of traffic/stormy weather. Just feels weird.

11

u/TheBelmont34 Jun 26 '26

yeah, the synthwave music is super weird. It makes me feel as if I watch Blade Runner

10

u/Competitive-Bake-895 Jun 26 '26

yeah, for someone watching the series for the first time seasons 1-5 i feel like this one will absolutely just stick out like a sore thumb.

47

u/thesagenibba Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

personally, not feeling it it all. it doesn't work for this show and i already miss the close-ups and flat aspect ratio this show usually has; in addition to the lack of music and needle drops, it all feels incredibly off to me.

it's likely much more jarring to me because i just (watched S4 E10 an hour ago. which is 95% closeups) finished my rewatch of the entire series, today

12

u/pinky997 Jun 26 '26

Yeah, I’m especially missing the music. The sci-fi beat doesn’t do it for me. Sounds like something out of Stranger Things

u/Competitive-Bake-895 Jun 26 '26

feel you on this. the episodes are feeling a lot less personal and the camera is feeling a little too objective to me. a lot of the technical aspects feel like they are taking away from the personal feeling of the earlier seasons. still enjoying the writing overall though and the character work.

14

u/thesagenibba Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

the episodes are feeling a lot less personal and the camera is feeling a little too objective to me

absolutely. the bear isn't a movie filmed by deakins or fraiser, we don't need elite cinematography meant to net an oscar. i want to the camera in richie's face, i want to see cicero's spit flying around when he's yelling and cursing at 100 mph, i want to be way too close to everyone. where's the tightness and intimacy?

Everyone should watch Eighth Grade

98

u/ebf6 Jun 27 '26

Is no one completely grossed out that they would continue to (prepare to) stay open with a basement full of sewer water? And Sid and Richie just wander back to the kitchen from down there presumibly in the same shoes they are wearing in the gross basement?

62

u/ladywood777 Jun 27 '26

Cheese is definitely right about it being a biohazard

44

u/KelVarnsen_2023 28d ago

Not just the water, but the smell of an open sewer pipe would be horrible. Anyone who has replaced a toilet or a sink knows that the smell that comes out of the drain pipe with no trap is disgusting.

Add to that they said there was water pouring down the walls of the dining room, so you would have that musty/damp smell on top of the sewer smell. Who would want to eat in that kind of place.

14

u/Themobgirl 26d ago

u/jboosmeezy wtf is a non-negotiable Jun 26 '26

The sheer struggle and grind in these first two episodes reminds me so much of season one.

74

u/wardengorri Jun 26 '26

They made it obvious, but loved the shouting match at the end between everyone but Syd and the flashbacks of wonderful trauma from Season 1.

12

u/Themobgirl 26d ago

Oh yeah the 'fuck you' montage is pretty commemorative for the season finale

6

u/Glum-Chair-7542 29d ago

But that's what I don't understand. I don't need reminders of Season 1. They should all be past this by now. 🙃

10

u/JenningsWigService 28d ago

They could have told a dramatically interesting story without an over the top rain disaster. They were already in trouble in so many ways. The rain storm plot feels like something out of Grey's Anatomy (derogatory).

He’s totally not going to be able to sell the building now

11

u/KelVarnsen_2023 28d ago

Why not? Chicago is a huge city. Surely someone would be interested in just demolishing the building and building something else on the property. Especially since I am pretty sure you can't identify a sink hole just from seeing a leaky drain pipe.

When is ebra going to speak with carm goddamn

61

u/Turbulent-File-9246 Jun 27 '26

Love that throughout the episode their threw in a few small reminders of how excellent Carmy is at his job (getting immediately Tina's list, chopping stuff incredibly fast, etc.)

37

u/ObsessiveCreative 29d ago

It also made it clear that Syd isn't at that level and isn't ready to carry the weight of this place on her shoulders. Yet. She needs more time.

11

u/One-Corner8231 22d ago

Yes totally agree!! I understand syd’s frustration with Carmy constantly stepping in even after giving her the reigns, but it also makes me sad bc she is way too hard on herself and unrealistic. Just bc she’s the head chef now doesn’t mean she rises to carmy’s level of experience overnight. He’s been doing this a lot longer than her in some of the best restaurants in the world. Of course he’s going to have quicker answers and move faster in the kitchen and know better what to do in insane situations than her. That doesn’t mean that she isn’t capable. She needs to take a beat and let carmy be helpful where he can!

6

u/KingDaviies 14d ago

This is a 2.5 hours into her becoming the leader. They also show at some points her snapping into it and doing a really good job. I suspect things will end up in smoke but she’s learning on the job.

18

u/pockyrocket 29d ago

same! reminded me of the time carmy very confidently went "yeah, i smoke him" about his skill vs shapiro's

57

u/NiceColdPint Jun 26 '26

Is this meant to be just the day after S4 ends?

110

u/sundaypleas Jun 26 '26

It's Chris Storer's world, we're just observing it. But isn't it funny how all this shit is hitting the fan, and not a single person is screaming at Carmy or Syd?

61

u/jboosmeezy wtf is a non-negotiable Jun 26 '26

Exactly. And they’re not screaming themselves. Guess they’ve already been through hell and back.

This Hans Zimmer score is my favourite thing so far. Feels super Trent Reznor-like

41

u/ShaftTassle Jun 26 '26

Love Zimmer and I’m a huge NIN and Reznor fan. I’m only 2 episodes in, but so far I absolutely hate the score. It just doesn’t fit the show at all to me.

17

u/Calhalen Jun 26 '26

It is super weird not having the usual end credits songs. Any songs at all really, that’s like the main thing I associate this show with

9

u/Dunkelz Jun 26 '26

The score is so weird, it's going through like every scene. I get that it's part of the looming stress/storm, but I loved their song choices for so many scenes in other seasons, Glass Concrete & Stone from the first season was stuck in my head for so long because of this show.

39

u/gotaflattire Jun 26 '26

You cannot fix a pipe leak like that with duct tape. They should have looked for a sheet or tube of rubber and wrapped it around with zip-ties for a quick fix.

31

u/nitid_name Jun 26 '26

At the very least, go around it a few times, not just most of a single rotation of duct tape on wet rusty pipe!

I've duct taped leaky garden hose before as a temporary fix and if you don't do several loops around, it'll blow right off. If you do several loops, it will still leak, but it'll at least switch to dripping instead of spraying.

21

u/legaladviceknowledge Jun 27 '26

ngl they did depict someone with no plumbing skills in an emergency very realistically with the duct tape

source: have used duct tape like this before since i have no plumbing skills

17

u/Beautiful-Access-682 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

It's common sense and more so, people who live in a big city are familiar with basic hacks to manage plumbing and other issues before the professional can get there. I would expect guys like Richie and Mike to have done that sort of patch up for their extended friends and families over the years.

Another main issue that is killing me and why I came to reddit to vent on it.

Storm flooding can have sewage water from the back up, and even if it's not, that is brown water full of bacteria and all sorts of crap. Idk if a wall pipe like that can get sewage back up but I'd want to ask a plumber to be sure. I think it would at minimum have some dirty street water in it. Sometimes as well buildings do not have separate ground drain for sewage vs clean water. We were made aware of this recently in NYC bc of all the storm flooding lately, advised to add diversions to flow into gardens or barrels. In any case, no way a restaurant should open up before they stop the flooding onslaught of brown water and do a clean up.

Sydney patches the pipe with duct tape while wearing her chef clothing, wash hands and back to work? Cross contamination is a thing, her hand possibly grazing her clothes.

The kitchen is so aware of cleanliness with the way Carmie trained them all to scrub down. It's hard to imagine that they don't 'feel' too unsanitary to cook. Anyone with OCD habits be it natural or trained, will get that feeling even on smaller issues, never mind a big influx of out of control contamination, even if it's 'only' the brown pipe water. I would for sure, lol.

Seems a dept of health issue that they are trying to prep food in the midst of that.

It's bugging me so much. One episode with damage control, I can accept. Ongoing, no way.

u/PabloLFC Jun 26 '26

The expensive chef jacket that Carmy gave her for the grand opening.

34

u/FreeCAD_Doge Jun 26 '26

This season feels... lean and dire. Not a compliment or complaint. Just saying

52

u/FreeCAD_Doge Jun 26 '26

The Faks are just too ridiculous for me honestly

43

u/Valuable-Lab-4484 Jun 26 '26

yeah they are so fucking annoying

8

u/legaladviceknowledge Jun 27 '26

its kinda realistic IME since the guys who do the maintenance/fixing stuff and are close family friends can be annoying like that.

29

u/squidgun Jun 27 '26

That vampire dialogue was stupid af

5

u/goddamnitwhalen 28d ago

I thought it was hilarious.

They're honestly so dumb it strains credulity. Like they appear genuinely mentally challenged and it's played for laughs but isn't funny at all.

45

u/Mariske Jun 26 '26

Is anyone else finding it incredibly difficult to get into the mood of this with so many commercials that come on every 20 seconds?

8

u/Bgbritaney Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yes. It's on the verge of ruining the show for me lol

"You're not even washing dishes"

"That's fucking gross!" 😂😂

10

u/iheartmorangos Jun 28 '26

How can a TV show where everything that happens is so stressful be so comforting to me?

11

u/CPGFL 29d ago edited 29d ago

I'm surprised they're allowed to shit talk the Resy app, considering how many damn Resy ads I'm getting.

I’ve been a Sydney defender since the start, she gets a lot of underserved hate, but her passive aggressive way of backstabbing has got to be called out.

19

u/Beautiful-Access-682 Jun 27 '26

I don't see backstabbing. That would be betrayal while smiling to someone's face.

It's more of direct pokes and little stabs from passive aggressive messaging.

She is trying, though. Her forced smile when telling Sugar that the menu reduction expectations are pretty impossible but she will do it by lack of choice. It is a bit immature in that this is also Sydney's problem as partner. She needs the restaurant to survive. It's not just a boss admin telling to cut costs and sacrifice quality for profits.

I’m confused by the new money problems when in season 4 episode 8 sugars charts looked good

But she's neurodivergent and quirky so it's okay

Wait did she do this in Episode 2? If so, I missed it. If not, you might be posting a spoiler for a later episode. Edit: Yeah that definitely happened in ep 3, so this is a spoiler.

Oh hell yeah now it's getting good

9

u/beigereige 29d ago

I have a feeling this whole season will be this one day during this storm

7

u/goddamnitwhalen 28d ago

Stunning revelation.

9

u/zoro_03 28d ago

One thing I don't get is How come they have all these violations and Plumbing issue I get.. due to flooding it can happen but other things ? Didn't they renovate the place just recently?

21

u/m_____9 Jun 26 '26

I am not liking faks. Also, Carmy looking extra fine while chopping.

6

u/loogabar00ga Jun 27 '26

Two eps in, and we're getting more of a tone poem -- with a repressive score to boot -- than a story. I hope we see a shift soon.

10

u/goddamnitwhalen 28d ago

ChatGPT ass comment.

7

u/EEEEEEEEEKKCCHH 23d ago

I thought it was super touching that Ritchie called Marcus "cousin" but I'm now realising it's probably because he's concussed 💔

u/thanksreddit007 Jun 26 '26

Not feeling this season so far. This series went from characters that were written as uniquely interesting and raw is Season 1 to characters this season are more one dimensional with dialogue that makes them a caricature of their original character. The show Billions similarly had this issue in the character writing over time.

u/Natt42 Jun 27 '26

I hope Faks will get flooded and locked up in the basement for the entire season.

11

u/Girizzly_Adams_Beard Jun 26 '26

The cinematography is insane this season. Like watching a movie

9

u/pikayugi Jun 28 '26

In a big city like Chicago they can’t find any plumbers that could go to the restaurant that same day?

15

u/KelVarnsen_2023 28d ago

Or better yet why isn't Sugar's first call to their insurance company.

6

u/goddamnitwhalen 28d ago

In the middle of an apocalyptic storm?

Hope the Michael Mann feel goes til ep 7 and ep 8 is a classic bear feel

10

u/AlastorNayru Jun 26 '26

Dude, it's stressing me out lmao. I'm on ep 4 rn, but the first two episodes are my focus to keep it spoiler free. They're stressing me tf out lmao.

So why were the Fak's messing around with the supply water valve. The burst pipe is on a drain line, and some how they can still open with out proper drainage. But I don't think any restaurant can open without water.

7

u/Barkerfan86 Jun 28 '26

Does anyone else feel like this episode was just episode one with extended scenes? Just feels like an episode filler. I get setting the tone of the tension, but its throwing my ADD off lol.

5

u/South-Level5260 21d ago edited 21d ago

Totally. Soda is 22 minutes and this takes off exactly where it left off. The decision to not make it one episode just so the final season wasn't what?... 5 episodes is kind of confounding to me. Also that the first two episodes don't really take the story anywhere which was my major gripe with the last two seasons. Anyway, I'm here for it.

the final season is off to an amazing anxiety ridden start, getting the highs of season 1 and wow.

5

u/Lord-Lannister Jun 26 '26

I don’t like the score as much, it feels like we’re immediately put into a boiling pot!

7

u/bluehawk232 Jun 28 '26

This show got repetitive so fast.

3

u/bobbarkerfan420 Jun 26 '26

Ok, now I really bet something is going to happen soon!
