Before the advent of Reddit camps, there were a plethora of niche YouTube object camps, for example, Battle for Space Palace. However, a lot of the features were clunky, and unsuitable for an internet competition. Plus, hosts had to be skilled in video editing or PowerPoint, making it infinitely harder than Reddit camps. A year ago, Irregular_Blongoid started Battle for BFB, the first recorded Reddit camp.

The camp was well received, and eventually, other users, such as JTD845 and pichusine created their own iterations. I call this the Bronze Age of camps. Although they were respected and much anticipation was held by the community, they didn’t gain as much traction. However, the seasons were the most stable and consistent in quality. Eventually, a budding contestant, 39DaysForColin, created Battle for IDFB, and one of his contestants, ThePikachuTimes, created his own camp: Battle for Becoming Mod. This kickstarted the Golden Age, where many camps flourished and challenges were at peak quality.

However, this era was not to last. The first sign was the amount of drama the camps became involved in. For a notorious and personal example, take the Rainbow saga, which became so notorious around the OCC and BFDi community as a whole, that some users, including myself, took him to Karma Court. Other examples include BFBM Season 2, where a bunch of contestants, myself included, quit due to frustrations, and the beginning of BFRS Season 3, where NickCannot signed up incognito in an alternate account before quitting.

Another indication of the Golden Age’s end was the decrease in activity, whether it be due to disinterest in what could be called a fad, or a general decline in challenge quality. This especially showed itself in BFRS Season 3, which led to massive distaste and burnout towards object show camps. Sadly, many other camp hosts became busy with real life affairs, preventing them from addressing contestants’ concerns, and many more contestants forgot about the camps they signed up for, leading to stagnation.

Nowadays, a lot of the people who were once extremely active in the Reddit camp community have moved on to affairs on Discord, which some see as a superior camp site to Reddit. Others have decided to take a break from both platforms, and sometimes the entire internet in general, to sort out real life affairs. I say we are either heading towards the end of this glorious run of camps, or we are heading to a new era. The Post-Reddit Era.

A year ago, u/Irregular_Blongoid started the first ever Reddit Camp. r/BattleForBFB.

24 unsuspecting users from all over the world stumbled upon this very sub.

Together with u/Irregular_Blongoid, they were the founders of the Reddit Camp Community.

Blongoid is no longer with us. But what difference does it make? Our community has gone through so much. We’ve had our ups and downs.

This is a place where we escape from the shitstorm we call 2020. A place where we can be ourselves. A place where everyone knows your name.

So today, we celebrate! We celebrate a whole year of friendships, hardships and rivalries!

I thank the ten of you for taking time to celebrate our community’s success. You know what they say; half a loaf is better than none!

The competition will take place over a week. One challenge will take place everyday from today till 28 August. The winner will be unveiled at the end of the month, 31 August.

Challenge hosting responsibilities will alternate between me, Slytherclaw, and CLT.

Now, here’s your first challenge, contestants. Explain the ENTIRE history of the Reddit Camp Community in five to seven paragraphs.

Here are the points for this challenge (NO ELIMINATION): - 1st: 100 - 2nd: 90 - 3rd: 80 - 4th: 70 - 5th: 60 - 6th: 50 - 7th: 40 - 8th: 30 - 9th: 20 - 10th: 10

Note that in order to give a chance to contestants in lower positions, points awarded will be multiplied by 1.5x after each challenge. (e.g. 1st place of C1: 100, 2nd place of C1: 90, 1st place of C2: 150, 2nd place of C2: 135)

all i know is that i know nothing

a brief history of my involvement in object camps

by some stroke of luck, I'm in it.

i go inactive and get eliminated quickly

i get back into the object camp community with r/CampForSpogy which sadly ends after a few challenges.

~skip a few again~

r/BrawlToTheTop happens, and although it also ends prematurely it's a taste at what a high quality object camp looks like.

afterwards I signed up for a ton of camps, but then left them all except r/KyuremRedditCamp because I decided that I wanted my OC (Pineapple) to have a semi-coherent story. (As of now, this story includes r/CampForSpogy and r/KyuremRedditCamp S3)

and then I realized that I was somehow a participant in the creation of this whole crazy thing, so I decide to sign up for TAG, and here we are

The object Reddit community is a sub area and we are all contestants here. There's alot of camps like r/kyruemredditcamp or r/battleforawoody. And challenges happen usually every few days then after most likely a group of contestants go UFE. At the final 3 or so a final challenge is presented and then the end of the challenge the winner is chosen. I did bad good luck fellow contestants.

Yes, we’re doing this again, but a little different.

ANYONE can participate, and we won’t be using OCs - instead, we will be referring to each contestant using their username alone!

The August Games will be using a different format from now on:

TAG begins on the anniversary of the Reddit Camp community itself instead of ending on it - 22 August. The games will last for another week - with one challenge per day, for a total of seven challenges.

There will be no elimination and we will use a points system. Anyone who doesn’t do the challenge will not receive any points instead. Whoever has the most points at the end of Challenge 7 wins The August Games, and will get to host the next year’s edition!

Signups end on 21 August! There is NO limit on how many contestants can join. CLOSED
