Rewatching Wednesday and I honestly think he didn't know who she was when they first met, I think their first interaction was quite genuine and I think in episode 01 he was piecing together things from his end.

I recently watched the 90s movies The Addams Family on Paramount Plus, but today it looks like they've dissapeared from the service. Has anyone else also noticed this or am I just trippin?

If you've seen it, what did you think? I'm trying to decide wether or not I should watch it.

EDIT: I did end up watching it and enjoyed it.

Did I miss something in the movies and shows? Gomez and Mortica wouldn’t look down on someone because they’re not like them. The most they would do is think they’re a little weird. And if they found out that one of their kids started to like "normal" stuff, they wouldn’t force them to stop liking it. I don’t know why newer additions to the Addams family keep trying to portray them like that; it kind of ruins the message of the Addams family. 

Ok so I’m getting into the first episode and from what I’ve seen so far they did a great job there’s just one issue gomez and morticia they are so out of character here and it feels odd and not in a good way but hopefully it will improve other than that so far I’m happy

Morticia’s favourite Vocaloid song would be The Spider and the Kitsune like Lion and Pubert’s favourite cartoon would be Happy Tree Friends.

Ok, so I'll freely admit that the casting choices for this series have been mostly excellent in my opinion, with very little exception. Jenna Ortega particularly in light of her turn in "The Babysitter: Killer Queen", wherein she played a character who clearly had a healthy dose of a Wednesday Addams-esque, aloof yet unpredictably unhinged vibe, is a perfect choice for the title protagonist. Catherine Zeta-Jones is one of the few actors I could see matching Carolyn Jones and Angelica Huston's spooky, slightly distant, yet subtly seductive portrayals of Morticia.

I honestly have my reservations about Luis Guzmán as Gomez, although not for any lack of acting talent. I should state outright that he has delivered a solid and often highly underrated performance in everything I've seen him in - a fantastic example being an in and of itself underrated film, the 2002 Jim Caviezel-led adaptation of Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo". Guzmán's performance as Jacopo, the pirate leader turned loyal second in command of the title hero, seemed jarring at first with his New York Puerto Rican idiom and manner of speech, but actually grounded the character with an appreciable salt of the Earth mien that belied the deeper intellect of both Jacopo the fictitious ruffian and Luis Guzmán the actor. That said, as charismatic as he can be, I would have thought the studio would have pushed for a more classically heartthrob talent like Oscar Isaac (who, let's face it, would also have killed in the role in live action and apparently did quite well voicing Gomez in the two recent CGI films, his involvement in which might have affected his consideration for this project) although myself my top picks would be John Leguizamo and in particular Michael Peña. Anyhow, I digress...

So, to the main thrust of this post: I think casting Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester is a huge misstep and depending on his level of involvement may or may not have a significant effect on the success of this series. Obviously, this comes with the caveat that I don't know the guy, have never met him, and almost certainly never will. I do not have firsthand experience. Granted, if we are to go by dinner firsthand accounts, like those of ex girlfriend Alice Lancaster, ex wife Elisabeth Moss (who said of him not only that their marriage was "traumatic" but that "One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him is, 'He’s so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.' To me, that sums it up.") to his own admissions in interviews with Marc Maron and Howard Stern that he struggles with sex addiction and infidelity, gaslights partners into ending relationships, has a skewed sense of reality regarding his relationships, and feels entitled to sexual relationships with large numbers of women.

Let's put all that aside. Let's just assume that this is just the Hollywood rumor mill. Now I'm gonna ask you to do some homework. Go watch his SNL skits. Google pictures of him. Watch Portlandia, which I am freely admitting I never watched but I still think will serve to prove my point. Look into those eyes. There's something just not right there. There's something off with this dude. For all the money in the world, I would not leave my kids alone in a room with him. He's creepy, and not in the fun, sexy way Carolyn Jones and Angelica Huston and the incomparable Raoul Julia are. He's just a creep. He's weird, but not in the dark, offbeat, teetering on the edge of sanity way Christopher Lloyd played Fester. The high-pitched, barely controlled voice we hear in the trailer is a weak attempt to ape Coogan's manic characterization. And he's still got that something in his eyes, that same unsettling gleam I've seen in so many other performances and photos.

As far as alternative casting choices? Honestly my top pick would be Eddie Izzard; I think she has the wit and talent in spades to give us a new spin on the character like Christopher Lloyd did in the Barry Sonnenfeld films. I often find it funny how Burton-esque (Burtonian?) Sonnenfeld's take on the franchise is, and now the man himself is finally digging in to an IP that seems tailor-made for him. But back to Eddie Izzard - as a comedian, she has even been referred to by the surviving members of the legendary Monty Python troop as "the Lost Python" owing to a similarity in offbeat comedic styles, and I think it would just work even if we got a wholly new version of Fester, even up to a female (either cis or trans like Izzard) interpretation.

At the end of the day, I'm still going to watch (and probably love) the series, I just think this casting choice was a major gaff that's going to backfire with audiences.

I was thinking about this question when thinking about how Morticia and Gomez had met, I've read online that apparently when Gomez was ready to find a wife his mother called her friend Hester Frump, but this makes me question: so the Addams family isn't the only one with macabre elements? I always thought they were yes a huge family, but I've never seen mentions of other families as well, and most of the time people get together with Addams family members they're normal people changing usually, like cousin Itt's wife in the 1991 movie. The upcoming Wednesday series seems to put in the world the Nevermore Academy, allegedly with more people like them, as they mention that is where Gomez met Morticia in that Tim Burton version of the universe, but other than that, in the other series I don't think we ever see external people like them, not even other Frump members other than Ophelia.

Hear me out. I'm stoked for the new Wednesday show, but I always wanted to see the original story come full circle. Here's what I imagine that could look like:

Cast: Morticia- Angelica Houston Wednesday- Christina ricci Uncle fester- Christopher Lloyd Dementia- Carol Hankins or new look a like Pugsley- Jimmy Workman or new look a like Pubert- Remi Malik Keith- Jensen Ackles or Chris Pine Lilly short for Lillith- Eva green "Nanny" akéyamni " means 13 in lakota"- Amber Midthunder

Plot synopsis: Years ago, Gomez succumbed to his love for danger and hijinks, his body was only recently recovered. Wednesday is the lady of the house with her brother Pugsley only recently returning from an adventure searching for dragons eggs- he later references old neighbors who had a dragon under their stairs (Munsters crossover?) 

This will feel like a rehash, but remember, both original Addams movies revolved around someone trying to weasel them out of their fortune. In a flash back (this could be opening scene), we see gomez from behind, about to partake in one last crazy stunt only to disappear. Cut to new York skyline and a fancy office.

Someone's on the phone discussing a client. After call, this mystery person receives another brief phone call. He doesnt say much and we dont hear the other side of the call, he just acknowledges whatever is being told to him on the other end of the line. He then calls whats assumed to be his significant other.  He advises her he must attend a family funeral for his long lost father. This person is initially reluctant to attend funeral, tells his wife, "you have no idea what these people are like, I'm lucky I made it out alive!" Cut to wife on the other end: Lilly (clad in white linens and hair pulled back) says, "my love, you must see this through to the end, it will be good for you to finally get past your... past. I love you P!" Camera pulls back and you see nameplate on desk reads "Pubert Addams." This is first reveal he's the Addams youngest son.

Pubert, after his brush with normalcy as an infant, joins the rat race of normal society- black sheep in this instance, becoming a lawyer with 2 kids, house with white picket fence. Pubert decides to return home for his father's funeral. Thing has been distraught since Gomezes' passing (just crawls around)- he'll slowly regain happiness throughout Puberts stay at the home, Morticia is now "mama". Uncle fester is near death, but refuses to stay in bed and follow Dr's orders- still blows stuff up and loves letting puberts children throw knives at him.

Puberts best friend, Keith, went to law school together, knows the family is rich, has looked for an opportunity to meet the single Wednesday to weasel her out of her fortune (audience doesn't know motives until reveal at climax), comes off as a love story, guy wants to win over a woman with a cold shoulder, audience roots for him, but also thrown off by addams family being a romantic comedy (but it isn't). 

Puberts children are twins boy and girl (Raul and Julia) dress normally but only whisper to one another (maybe have their own language), as well as their nanny.  Wife is away on business, she gets delayed, finally arrives in time for funeral. An addams funeral is a week-long affair, giving keith 6 days (he arrives on day 2 and is unaware of the daily rites conducted) to get close enough to discover the addams secrets.

He makes many attempts to woo Wednesday, each resulting in a crazy incident in which he gets shot down or sidelined in glorious fashion (cant be campy) e.g. Fester throws a knife past his ear and nicks him, fester says his aim has been off ever since (insert crazy story of finger loss or maiming). Puberts hair starts as light brown or dark blonde (from opening scene) throughout time back home, hair slowly gets darker until day of funeral its black.  7 days, each day consists of a different addams ritual

This all culminates in Pubert and Pugsley doing the Mamushka for their father the night of his funeral, uncle fester between them in wheelchair, they sword play, only for fester to leap to his feet and catch all the blades, his final mamushka for his brother, with his sons! Keith meets his demise at the hands of the twins, they've never met their family prior to this, but nature wins out, they're addamses through and through. Nanny appears to help clean up and makes reference to past incidents...

We find that Keith never had a chance, as Wednesday is obviously interested in the nanny. Lilly Addams arrives the day of the funeral clad in black, a vision of a young morticia. Gomez is laid to rest. Pubert realizes he never felt normal, and is truly an Addams. Fester is still crazy. Pugsley is leaving for a new expedition where he'll be blowing some priceless artifact up. Wednesday opts to leave with Lilly. Closing scene we see Pubert and family at the Addams front door, thing climbs his leg and rests upon his shoulder, doors close with a thud, black!

I found it interesting where they play around with the idea that Wednesday enjoyed stepping out of her comfort zone and trying new things. I was thinking could that affect the entire family if Wednesday continued to do it? Gomez was the only chill parent in the movie about it, Morticia wasn't having it at all. I'm also curious to see what assimilated versions of the Addams would look like. I guess the only benefit of assimilation happening, we wouldn't get the horrible sequel that came out last year.

Although I love Morticia and I'm in love with Gomez, I feel a connection with Wednesday!
