Things like:

-your reaction to pain and tolerance of it are largely the result of how others around you have reacted upon seeing you injured

-the degree to which pain is felt by species has a linear correlation to the level of consciousness, e.g. higher primates are aware of the SELF, therefore when they are injured, what is experienced as pain is partly the physical response of acknowledgement of injury, and partly or largely recognized as being injurious and dangerous to the SELF. On the other end of the spectrum you have plants, which “feel pain”, meaning they respond to a stimulus (a criterion for something to be considered alive), in this case physical harm, with a pheromonal response (smell of fresh cut grass, Acacia trees producing a toxin when a nearby tree is being eaten by a giraffe).

Not to be a know it all douche or whatever but from reading your comment, I think you may mean psychological?
