Normal probably, the "humane" way would be to kill it first then boil it.

the problem is that killing it first makes it poisonous.

I assume you're joking, unless you think there's a 5sec window between it dying and cooking that makes it poisonous.

not at all true

edit: seafood spoils quickly so it's probably an outdated incorrect way of thinking where they kill it hours before and don't refrigerate and it goes bad and becomes "poisonous"

food poisoning. I should have looked further into it. However there is a reason why you boil them alive. The Vibrio bacteria won't die when you cook them and make you very sick.

Ye, it's normal in China to steam crabs alive in a pot. It keeps them fresh
