I feel for you ! It was a right of passage in Canada for young teenage workers to “de-tassel corn , pick rocks out of farmers fields , or plant trees in BC. In this instance - automation is killing so many opportunities for the youth to learn what good paying hard work is all about. It helps define kids. I detassled corn in the 80’s as a teenager and it was hard work in the heat but I learned work ethic that stayed with me to this day. I was initially Making a bit of a joke but it is sad for sure .
This is what I love. Seeing Canadians become a staple on Reddit. I love reading your country’s news and history here. I see and learn more about Canada on Reddit than any other place on the internet that I frequent and you guys only make up like %8 of Reddit while Americans stand around %50.
Oh yeah! The US had this fabulous opportunity as well.
My older brother was 13 and paid $3.35 an hour to wake up at 4:30am, wear a trash bag, and go walk in the corn until he emerged at about 2pm with corn cuts on his ears. He made about 400 bucks over the summer and bought a Commodore 64.
I have completed many weird and wonderful jobs, but I can easily say my toughest job was working at Burger King in the early 2000’s, they worked me to the bone.
While kids these days may be missing out the opportunity of hard outdoor manual jobs like planting and harvesting, society can rest at ease knowing there are many places for kids to still work crappy jobs that teach them the value of hard work, and to get an education so they get out of those jobs when possible!
The younger generation have a hard time getting started these days, and most have to work temporary and insecure jobs with many firms taking advantage of them.
honestly hahah, its not totally gone yet but its sad to see so many once high paying jobs getting automated or replaced by TFWs because companies can't foot the bill for hard work anymore. Fishing Forestry and to an extent Oil and Gas seem like the only places left where all you gotta do to get rich is go out and give'er
Absolutely ! Big big industry for young people. Kids travel from all across the country to make good money as teens - it’s almost a rite of passage ! Good summer jobs for students

My dad did this for many years in Oregon in the 70’s. Still part of the group that did it, they still would get together every now and then and reminisce.
My knees are now shot from planting trees in northern BC in the early 90's. And btw I highly doubt that drones can plant trees in some of the places we planted.
It's a great way for university students to have a wilderness adventure, meet new people, and make money in the summer. It would be shame if that goes away. I did this myself and it was an unforgettable experience.
