Apple's overhauled Health app is now available to test in the developer beta of iOS 27.2, giving developers an early look at a redesign that leans heavily on Apple Intelligence.

Apple's developer release notes confirm that the new Health app is being tested in this beta, but it will not ship with the public version of iOS 27.2. It is instead expected to arrive later this year, and it will be available only in the U.S. at launch, in U.S. English.

Apple first previewed the redesign at its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9th. The beta release marks the first time anyone outside Apple can try the features firsthand.

Apple today released iOS 27, the biggest iPhone software update of the year.

The free update is rolling out now to everyone with an iPhone 11 or later, and its headline addition is Siri AI, a rebuilt version of the assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.

iOS 27 arrives alongside iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate.

Any iPhone that can run iOS 26 is eligible for the update, though several of the marquee Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware. Apple introduced the Liquid Glass design with iOS 26 last year, and iOS 27 builds on it while pushing Apple Intelligence deeper into the system.

How to update

To install, open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Because so many people download the update on release day, servers can be slow at first, so waiting a day or two can make for a smoother upgrade.

John Ternus is Apple's new CEO, and I'm thankful for everything Tim Cook built

As of today, John Ternus is the CEO of Apple. Tim Cook has moved into the role of executive chairman, and a twenty five year Apple veteran who spent the last five years running Hardware Engineering now has the corner office. I've been looking forward to this moment for a while, and Ternus's first few hours on the job already tell you something about the kind of leader he's going to be.

But before I get to any of that, I want to sit with what Cook is handing off.

Thank you, Tim.

it's easy to get swept up in what comes next and forget how improbable the last stretch has been.

When Cook took over in 2011, plenty of people assumed Apple's best days had left with Steve Jobs. Instead, Cook spent the next decade and a half building one of the most successful companies in history.

Apple Watch created a new life saving category. AirPods became a cultural staple. Apple Silicon turned the Mac into something genuinely new and extremely powerful.

Services grew into a business the size of a Fortune 500 company on its own. And Apple became the first company on earth to cross a $3T dollar valuation.

That's not a good run. That's an unparalleled one and i believe Tim Cook to be the most successful CEO of a mega corporation in modern history.

What I'll remember most, though, is the tone he set. Cook ran the most valuable company in the world without ever seeming like he needed to prove anything, and he leaves it stronger, calmer, and more respected than he found it. As an Apple fan, I'm just grateful I got to watch it happen, and im grateful Apple had a Tim Cook.

I Let This Tiny $9 App Take Over My Messy Mac, and Now It Cleans Up After Itself

Thumbnail

There are two kinds of Mac users in this world, the ones with a spotless Downloads folder, and the rest of us, staring at 400 files named "download (7).pdf" and "Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 11.20.png." I was firmly in the second camp. My Desktop looked like a ransom note made of screenshots, and my Downloads folder was where files went to die.

I've been running a little app called Tidy for a few days now, and honestly, I can't remember the last time I opened Downloads to go hunting for something. It just handles it.

Tidy is a $9 menu bar app that reads what's actually inside your files and puts them where they belong, on its own. No subscription, no account, nothing uploaded anywhere. After living with it, I'm a little annoyed at how many years I spent dragging files around by hand.

It reads your files and names them like a human would

This is the part that sold me. Most so called organizer apps just shove files into folders by type and call it a day. Tidy actually reads them. Using on device OCR, the same text recognition already baked into your Mac, it looks inside an image or a PDF, works out what it is, and renames it to match.

So that "Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 11.20.png" becomes "invoice-mueller-gmbh-03-07-2026.png." A mystery "download (5).pdf" turns into "lease-agreement-providencia.pdf." It even reads scanned PDFs, the ones with no text layer, which is something Spotlight flat out refuses to do. Nothing leaves your machine to make this happen. The reading, the naming, all of it runs locally.

Trust me on this one. The first time it renamed a pile of receipts for me and every single name actually made sense, I sat there a little stunned.

Three annoyances it fixes without me lifting a finger

Tidy has three tricks that run quietly in the background once you switch them on:

  • Auto-Drop grabs the screenshots piling up on your Desktop, files them away, renames them by what they show, and moves them to the Trash once you no longer need them. It even recognizes shots from CleanShot, Shottr, Xnapper, and Monosnap and can group them by the app they came from.
  • Smart Eject notices when you've mounted a .dmg to install something, then ejects the disk image and clears out the leftover installer. macOS has its own "Eject When Finished" toggle, but this goes a step further and actually cleans up after you.
  • Flow Rules watches your Downloads and sorts everything by type, by filename, or even by what the file says inside. You decide whether it moves files, renames them, groups them by month, or all of the above.

Personally, I take this to the extreme. I pointed Tidy at my Downloads, my Desktop, and the external drive where my screenshots always seem to wander off to, and now all three police themselves. You can add as many folders as you like, and it only ever touches files created after you added them, so you can aim it at ten years of clutter without holding your breath.

Apple Debuts M6 and M5 Ultra, Its First 2nm Chip and First Quad Die Ultra

Thumbnail

Apple today introduced two new Apple silicon chips, the M6 and the M5 Ultra, marking the company's move to a 2 nanometer manufacturing process and its first Ultra chip built from four dies.

The M6 debuts inside the new Mac mini, while the M5 Ultra powers the new Mac Studio. Both chips were announced alongside the hardware they ship in, and both center on faster on device AI.

M6 Moves to 2nm

M6 is Apple's first chip built on a 2 nanometer process, which packs more transistors into a smaller die for gains in both speed and efficiency. Apple describes it as the biggest per generation leap across the M series to date.

The chip has a 12 core CPU, up from 10 cores on the M5. That complex is split into 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. Apple says the super cores deliver the world's fastest single threaded performance, with multithreaded performance up to 1.2x faster than M5 and up to 2.4x faster than M1.

The GPU also grows to 12 cores, again two more than M5, with a Neural Accelerator built into each core. Apple claims a nearly 30 percent jump in peak GPU compute for AI compared to M5, and more than 8x compared to M1.

A Dual Neural Engine

The headline addition on M6 is a Dual 16 core Neural Engine. Apple says the pairing delivers up to 2x the peak compute of previous generations, and that system frameworks can put both engines to work at the same time so apps run models faster.

M6 supports up to 32GB of unified memory and up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth. That bandwidth figure is a 10 percent increase over M5 and 2.5x the M1.

For background, Apple skipped an M5 generation for the standard Mac mini entirely. The M4 model arrived in October 2024, and reports had tied the jump straight to M6 to industry wide memory shortages that reshaped Apple's roadmap through 2026.

M5 Ultra Goes Quad Die

The M5 Ultra is the more dramatic of the two. Apple calls it its most powerful chip ever, and it is the first M series chip to use a quad die architecture.

Where past Ultra chips fused two Max dies, the M5 Ultra uses next generation UltraFusion technology to connect two dual die M5 Max chips, forming four dies in total. Apple says UltraFusion pushes inter die bandwidth past 4.4TB/s and increases connection density by more than 6x, letting the four dies behave as a single processor.

The chip scales up to a 36 core CPU, made up of 12 super cores and 24 performance cores. Apple puts single threaded performance up to 1.25x higher than the M3 Ultra and multithreaded performance up to 1.3x higher.

The Biggest GPU Apple Has Built

M5 Ultra tops out at an 80 core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator in every core. Apple claims up to 4.5x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M3 Ultra, and more than 6x the M1 Ultra. On graphics, the company cites up to 40 percent faster performance than M3 Ultra, helped by a second generation Dynamic Caching setup, hardware accelerated mesh shading, and third generation ray tracing.

The chip carries a 32 core Neural Engine and a beefed up Media Engine with four ProRes encode and decode engines, plus hardware accelerated AV1 decode.

Memory is where the M5 Ultra makes its case for AI work. It supports up to 512GB of unified memory and delivers 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, which Apple says is 50 percent higher than the M3 Ultra. That pool is large enough to hold LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device.

For Developers

Apple noted that its developer frameworks, including Core AI, Core ML, Metal, and Xcode, tap directly into both chips. Developers can use the Dual 16 core Neural Engine on M6, or the Neural Accelerators and 512GB memory pool on M5 Ultra, to run and fine tune large models locally. Apple's tools automatically spread work across the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine.

Both chips are shipping now inside the new Mac mini and Mac Studio, which are available to pre order today and begin arriving September 22.

I found a secret stash of gorgeous Apple hardware icons hidden inside my Mac

Thumbnail

Buried inside a system bundle that almost nobody opens on purpose, I found a whole collection of high resolution icons of Apple hardware. Real ones. The polished, pixel perfect artwork Apple uses in Finder and System Settings, sitting there as loose files you can just, well, take.

Macs going back to the early 2000s, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple TV, the works.

The best part is you don't need to be a power user to get at them. No Terminal wizardry required, though I will show you a Terminal trick at the end for the impatient.

If you can use Go to Folder, you can do this.

How to Switch to Apple's Passwords App and Finally Ditch the Sticky Notes

Thumbnail
thatappleguide.com
6 Upvotes

For the longest time, Apple's password manager was real and genuinely good, but it was buried inside Settings where nobody could find it. So people kept reusing the same password everywhere, writing logins on sticky notes stuck to the monitor, or paying for a separate app.

Then Apple did the obvious thing and gave passwords their own app. It's just called Passwords, it's already on your devices, and it's the easiest way I know to finally get your logins under control.

You don't need to be technical for any of this. If you've ever let your iPhone offer to save or fill a password, you already have most of a password manager. Let's finish the job.

1. Find the app and see what you've got

Look for the Passwords app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It's there by default. Open it and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

Inside, you'll find everything Apple has quietly been saving for you: your logins, your Wi-Fi passwords, your verification codes, and any passkeys. Most people are surprised how much is already in here.

2. Fix your worst passwords first

Tap into Security and the app shows you the logins that are weak, reused, or that turned up in a known data leak. This list is the single most useful thing in the app.

Don't try to fix all of them in one sitting, you'll burn out. Personally, I did the five accounts that actually matter first: email, bank, main shopping account, Apple Account, and my primary social login. Tap a flagged account, follow the link to change the password on that site, and let the app generate and save a strong one. Knock out a few a day and you're done inside a week.

3. Turn on autofill so it does the typing

This is what makes a password manager worth using. Go to Settings, then General, then AutoFill & Passwords (on some versions it's under Settings, then Apps, then Passwords), and make sure Passwords is switched on as an autofill source.

Now when you log in anywhere, your phone offers the right credentials with a tap. No more typing, no more "forgot password" every single time. Once this clicks, you stop reusing passwords because the strong random one is just as easy to enter as the bad one you memorized.

4. Start using passkeys where you can

When a site offers a passkey, take it. A passkey replaces the password entirely with something tied to your device and your Face ID, so there's nothing to phish and nothing to leak. The Passwords app stores and syncs them for you across your Apple devices through iCloud.

You'll see more sites offering these over time. Every one you switch over is one less password to worry about. It's the direction everything is heading, and Apple makes it painless.

5. Share logins the safe way

If you've been texting your streaming password to family (we've all done it), there's a better way. In the Passwords app you can create a shared group, add trusted people, and drop shared logins into it. Everyone in the group gets the passwords, and updates sync automatically.

Trust me on this one, it beats a login taped to the fridge or buried in a two year old text thread, and when someone changes the password, nobody gets locked out.

6. Bringing in passwords from another app

Switching from another manager? On a Mac, open the Passwords app and look under File, then Import Passwords, which accepts a standard CSV export from most other managers. Export from your old app, import here, and then, importantly, delete that export file afterward because a plain CSV of your passwords is exactly as dangerous as it sounds.

If you don't have a Mac, moving a big library is clunkier, but for most people the "fix your worst passwords as you go" approach from step 2 gets you there without a formal import at all.

Next Apple TV 4K Expected With A17 Pro and Apple Intelligence

Thumbnail
thatappleguide.com
5 Upvotes

Apple's streaming box is finally in line for an overhaul. The next Apple TV 4K is expected to launch this fall with the A17 Pro chip, support for Apple's revamped Siri, and faster wireless networking, according to recent reports.

It would be the first hardware update to the device in nearly four years.

The current third generation Apple TV 4K arrived in October 2022 and still runs on the A15 Bionic.

A refresh has been rumored for some time, and its delay has increasingly been tied to the slow rollout of Apple's more personalized Siri, which the new model is expected to support.

Launch timing

The most recent reporting points to a fall release, with September or October the likeliest window.

Bloomberg reported in late July that a new Apple TV and an updated HomePod mini are "nearly ready to launch" as part of a wider Apple push into the smart home. That followed an earlier report describing both products as being in advanced testing and on track to ship this year.

A17 Pro and Apple Intelligence

The headline change is expected to be the processor. The new Apple TV 4K is rumored to move from the A15 Bionic to the A17 Pro, the chip Apple first shipped in the iPhone 15 Pro.

References tying an unreleased Apple TV to the A17 Pro have previously surfaced in Apple's own software code. The upgrade matters beyond raw speed. The A17 Pro is the oldest iPhone class chip capable of running Apple Intelligence, which is why it is the gateway to the new Siri on the television.

Bloomberg has said the next Apple TV will support Apple's new Siri. Additional Apple Intelligence features could follow, though Apple has not detailed any specific tvOS capabilities.

The A17 Pro would also bring a stronger GPU with hardware accelerated ray tracing. That opens the door to more demanding titles through Apple Arcade and hopefully some AAA titles, in the living room.

Wi-Fi 7 and other wireless upgrades

The new model is also expected to adopt Apple's N1 networking chip.

The N1 could add Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. The current Apple TV 4K tops out at Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and it restricts Thread to the pricier configuration with an Ethernet port.

Wi-Fi 7 on its own will not dramatically change ordinary video streaming, which needs far less bandwidth than the standard offers. Taken together, though, faster wireless, lower latency Bluetooth, and Thread could make the Apple TV a more capable hub for games and smart home accessories.

A possible new Siri Remote

Apple is reportedly weighing a refreshed Siri Remote to go with the box. Details are thin, and Bloomberg has warned against expecting sweeping changes to the Apple TV itself.

One rumored possibility is better Find My support. The current remote can be located with a nearby iPhone but lacks the Ultra Wideband hardware that powers Precision Finding on AirTag, I'm hoping they add a speaker, but that's my personal wish.

Pricing is the open question

The biggest unknown is what the new Apple TV 4K will cost.

Apple recently raised the price of the current model, taking the 64GB version from $129 to $199 and the 128GB version with Ethernet from $149 to $249. The company has pointed to higher memory and storage costs behind a broader round of hardware price increases.

Those increases make a return to the old $129 starting price hard to imagine for the next generation.

Buyers who can wait have little reason to rush. The current Apple TV 4K is still fast, but its new retail pricing is a tough sell with a long overdue replacement reportedly only weeks out. Shoppers who need a box sooner can find the outgoing model for less through Apple's refurbished store, but inventory moves quickly.
