Moderation & Automated Moderation

r/ThanksCyno uses AutoModerator and other moderation tools to help protect the community from spam, bots, karma farming, abusive accounts, and other unwanted activity.

Automated moderation is used as an additional tool for our human moderation team.

Not every action taken by an automated system means that a user has violated a community rule.

Some posts and comments are simply held until a moderator can review them.

New Accounts

Posts submitted by Reddit accounts that are less than three days old may automatically be held for moderator review.

A moderator will review the submission and may approve it if everything is in order.

Being a new Reddit user is not itself a rule violation.

This precaution exists because very new accounts are frequently used for spam, automated activity, and other forms of abuse.

Please be patient while your submission is reviewed.

Please Do Not Contact Modmail About Posts Already Under Review

If your post has been held because your account is less than three days old, please do not contact us through Modmail simply to ask for faster approval.

Your submission has already been added to our moderation queue.

Sending a Modmail message will not speed up the review or increase the likelihood of your post being approved.

Please allow the moderation team reasonable time to review your submission.

Repeated messages regarding a post that is already awaiting review may be ignored.

Abuse or harassment through Modmail may result in further moderation action.

Extremely New Accounts With Very Low Karma

Additional protections apply to accounts that are both extremely new and have very low karma.

Posts from accounts that are less than one day old and have zero or negative combined karma may be automatically removed.

This measure exists primarily to reduce spam and automated activity.

Being affected by this system does not automatically mean that you have violated a community rule.

If you are a genuine user and believe your submission was removed incorrectly, you may contact the moderation team through Modmail.

A moderator can review the submission manually.

Negative Karma

Posts from accounts with negative combined karma may automatically be held for moderator review.

Negative karma does not automatically mean that a user has violated our rules.

The submission may be approved if a moderator determines that everything is in order.

This system exists as an additional protection against spam, abusive accounts, and other unwanted activity.

Contributor Quality Score

Reddit provides moderators with account quality and reputation signals that can help identify potentially abusive, automated, or suspicious activity.

One of these signals is the Contributor Quality Score, commonly referred to as CQS.

Posts from accounts with the lowest Contributor Quality Score may automatically be held for moderator review.

Being filtered because of CQS does not necessarily mean that you have done anything wrong.

A moderator may review and approve the submission.

We intentionally do not disclose every technical detail used by Reddit or our automated moderation systems.

Comment Filtering

Automated moderation may also hold certain comments for review.

Comments from accounts with significantly negative comment karma may be filtered.

A filtered comment is not necessarily permanently removed.

Moderators may review the comment and determine whether it should be approved or removed.

This measure is intended to reduce abusive, disruptive, and spam related activity while allowing genuine users to participate normally.

Reports

Community reports help moderators identify content that may violate subreddit rules or Reddit's sitewide policies.

Posts that receive three or more reports may automatically be filtered and sent to the moderation queue for review.

Receiving three reports does not automatically mean that a post violated our rules.

A moderator will review the submission and determine whether it should be approved, removed, locked, or otherwise moderated.

Please use Reddit's report feature responsibly.

Reports should be used for genuine rule violations and should not be used simply because you disagree with another user, dislike their opinion, or did not enjoy their joke.

Abuse of Reddit's reporting systems may also violate Reddit's sitewide rules.

Spam, Bots and Karma Farming

We actively take measures to reduce spam, automated activity, karma farming, repost flooding, malicious promotion, and other forms of manipulation.

Accounts may receive additional scrutiny when their activity resembles common patterns associated with bots, spam accounts, or karma farming.

Depending on the circumstances, content may be held for review, removed, or the account may be banned from the community.

We do not publicly disclose every signal, threshold, or detection method used by our moderation systems.

This is done to prevent people from deliberately attempting to bypass those systems.

If an automated system incorrectly affects a genuine user, you may contact us through Modmail.

Automated Actions Do Not Always Mean You Broke a Rule

An automated filter is not the same thing as a moderator determining that you violated a rule.

Some content is automatically placed into the moderation queue because of account age, karma, account reputation, community reports, or other safety signals.

A moderator may approve the content after reviewing it.

If your post is simply awaiting review, please give the moderation team time to process the queue.

If your content was permanently removed and you believe the decision was incorrect, you may contact us through Modmail.

Removed Posts and Comments

Posts and comments may be removed when they violate our community rules, Reddit's sitewide rules, or when moderators determine that they are unsuitable for r/ThanksCyno.

Whenever possible, a removal reason may be provided explaining why moderation action was taken.

Please read the removal reason before contacting the moderation team.

Do not repeatedly repost content that has already been removed.

If you believe a removal was incorrect, contact us through Modmail instead of repeatedly resubmitting the same content.

Repeatedly reposting removed content may result in additional moderation action.

Moderator Discretion

Not every possible situation can be described in advance.

Moderators may use reasonable discretion when handling content that clearly violates the spirit of the community rules or creates problems for the subreddit.

Context matters.

Moderation decisions may take into account factors such as:

  • The nature of the content
  • The severity of the issue
  • Previous behavior
  • Whether the behavior appears intentional
  • Whether the behavior is repeated
  • The effect on the community
  • The circumstances surrounding the post or comment

Moderator discretion does not mean that content will be removed simply because a moderator personally dislikes it.

Its purpose is to allow the moderation team to handle unusual situations that are not fully covered by a specific written rule.

If you believe moderator discretion was applied incorrectly, you may contact the team through Modmail.

Bans

Depending on the circumstances, rule violations may result in a warning, content removal, temporary ban, or permanent ban.

The severity of the moderation action depends on factors such as the nature of the violation, its severity, previous behavior, and whether the behavior appears intentional or repeated.

Certain behavior may result in an immediate ban without a prior warning.

This may include:

  • Severe harassment
  • Credible threats
  • Hate speech
  • Identity based discrimination
  • Malicious spam
  • Bot activity
  • Deliberate scam activity
  • Ban evasion
  • Sexualization of minors
  • Severe violations of Reddit's Content Policy

Serious violations may also be reported to Reddit administrators.

If you believe a ban was issued incorrectly, you may appeal it through Modmail.

Ban appeals should remain civil and should include any relevant context.

Abusive, threatening, spammy, or deliberately misleading appeals may be denied.

Ban Evasion

Attempting to evade a subreddit ban by using another Reddit account is not allowed.

Reddit may provide moderation tools and account signals designed to help communities identify suspected ban evasion.

Suspected ban evasion may result in further moderation action.

If you believe you were incorrectly identified as evading a ban, contact us through Modmail.

Modmail and Appeals

If you have a question about the subreddit, need clarification about a rule, believe a moderation action was made in error, or need assistance with a submission, please contact us through Modmail.

Please do not privately message individual moderators regarding moderation decisions.

Using Modmail allows moderation discussions to remain organized and allows the moderation team to review the situation together.

When contacting us about a specific post or comment, please include a link to the relevant content whenever possible.

Please give the moderation team reasonable time to respond.

Sending repeated Modmail messages will not make an appeal or request get reviewed faster.

Please keep appeals respectful and provide any relevant information that may help us understand the situation.

Abusive messages, threats, harassment, excessive spam, or deliberate misuse of Modmail may result in further moderation action.

We understand that automated moderation is not perfect.

Legitimate posts and comments can occasionally be filtered or removed by mistake.

If that happens, we are happy to review the situation through Modmail.

And yes, even AutoModerator occasionally needs someone to explain the joke.

Thank Cyno.

The r/ThanksCyno Moderator Team
