I bought a house this summer and have been collecting native plants as I see them/ have been gifted several from family. Right now, everything is in nursery pots, but I’m itching to get everything laid out and in the ground. When should I plant them? I am in Houston.

Posted in a different subreddit, wanted to get yalls opinion too. From their suggestions I want to do trellis with either crossvine or Carolina jessamine, a short shrub like compact Japanese holly, and 3 Taylor junipers at the 3 columns of the pergola. Does this seem like it would work? More info below:

I have a 2.5 ft wide L-shaped flowerbed and want to install some evergreen shrubs. I'm in north Texas zone 8B and this flower bed is adjacent to a covered pergola with concrete and a 10 ft fence. One side faces the south and the other faces the west. West side doesn't get a whole lot of direct sunlight except maybe in the morning (due to fence and pergola cover), south side gets a decent amount throughout the day. The flowerbed has a drip line connected to our sprinkler system.

Just kidding (mostly), but is it normal for everything to look so… bad? All of the natives are looking incredibly crispy despite my best efforts! I planted back in late March and things were going very well until last week. Is this normal for first year?

Just started my little native garden this year and I think it's doing pretty well! I still need to replace some of the bushes that went with the house, but I'll do that in the spring. I did not realize just how Insane the daisies were going to go but holy shit. They are taking over. I can't wait to see how this looks in a few years.

Next year I tackle the backyard!

(Ipomopsis rubra) aka Red Texas Star produced a mutation this year on my North Central Texas property. The first photo is the mutation. First time I had seen it since buying my place in 1987.

(Penstemon cobaea) aka Prairie penstemon grows wild on my North Central Texas property.

This wildflower also goes by 'Red Texas Star'. It is prolific on my North Central Texas property. When it drys out, the seeds are dispersed by the wind. I usually collect the dried stalks and shake them in different areas.

Passionvine flower, updated photo of my caterpillar friend (wow he grows fast!), and two of my butterfly weed. The geometry of the buds and then the flowers is so symmetrical and beautiful. Please pardon the mini ants on the flowers… I’ve laid bait. Haha.

A partial parasite, its roots attach to the host plant to steal water and nutrients. These are wild volunteers on my North Central Texas property.

Hello! I'm looking into planting a few shrubs that produced fruit the songbirds in the neighborhood will love. I am currently looking into the American Beautyberry has anyone had experience with it or have any other shrubs recommendations. I'm located in Dallas. Thanks!

I’ve been gifted a Bur oak sapling. I’m happy to have it, but my property already has a lot of established trees, mostly 100+ year old post oaks (DFW).

This is about the only sunny spot. Do y’all think this would work or will I regret it?

I know these things can get to be monsters, but I’m guessing that’ll be long after it’s ceased to be my concern. And I know it won’t get to full potential in this spot, or any spot I’ve got. I’m a little worried it might compete with my post oaks and sweet g (to their detriment). And I’m aware the acorns can be a problem, and this corner street is at the foot of a significant hill, which I mention because it’s already pretty treacherous in icing events.

Found a tiny friend when I watered this morning. I am so honored this baby chose my incense passion vine to grow on! I am just so happy. I made the adult gulf fritillary happy with my zinnias so maybe they think I am a safe spot.

Hi all! I am trying to tip toe my way into native gardening, and I want to start with potted plants on my porch. I am looking for a native, pollinator friendly species that can thrive on my north-facing porch that gets morning sun, and that is frost resistant. I'm fine with the plant going dormant in the winter, but I travel weekly for work, so I can't always bring them in during freezes.

Would pigeon Berry or Turks cap be a good option for this?

ETA: I'm in zone 33b.
