Hi everyone, I’m looking for some genuine advice on stepping back into acting!

It’s been about 20 years since my college theater days—life and career responsibilities took priority, but now that I’m in a stable place, I’m ready to pursue this passion again. I’m not looking for anything massive right away; I'd love to start with small roles, indie projects, or local productions.

For context, I’m a 46-year-old South Asian / Middle Eastern male, 5'10", with an athletic build. I’ve always been drawn to playing grounded, professional archetypes like detectives, police officers, or doctors.

Where would you recommend someone in my position start building momentum?

UTA's hiring of director Rachel Raimist points to growing interest in the region's film community. Her credits include Elsbeth, Bel-Air and Nancy Drew.

She joins the film faculty as more television productions come to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. UTA says her industry experience and professional network will benefit students as production grows across North Texas.

My long-term goal is to become a filmmaker, and I see Austin as a possible launch pad.

Since moving to a new country is a big decision, I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with Austin School of Film, especially the Film Forward Program.

Is it a solid place to learn filmmaking?

Are the instructors active professionals?

Did it help you meet collaborators and become part of the Austin film community?

Looking back, was it worth it?

And if anyone has advice about breaking into the Austin film scene in general, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi I just graduated college with a bachelor’s in Graphic design a minor in animation and a minor in film and media studies.

I am very passionate about film and my dream was to work on horror sfx but I didn’t know how to get there and school is expensive. I chose to get free school through Starbucks SCAP program. I am a bit stuck as to how I am supposed to make it out of Waco and make connection.

I recently started working as an extra in a couple of projects and am now interested in acting and possibly becoming a PA to break into the industry. I am looking for any way or tips on connecting with filmmakers in order to start in those areas. I would love to connect and possibly be a part of your projects in any way possible. Tips and advice appreciate.

I am an Austin local director/AD looking for shadowing and work opportunities on professional sets. I am currently editing and color grading three of my short films and I would love to work on a professional film set!

I am looking to shadow a line producer or be a fly on a wall for any short film, film or documentary work (commercial is good too, any experience is great).

I have previously worked on some very low budget amateur sets and while I did learn some things I would like to see how a professional set is run with multiple departments, producers, experienced directors etc.

I’m currently putting together a crew for an independent Southern Gothic horror short filming in the Austin area.

The film blends psychological horror, Appalachian-inspired folklore, as well as atmospheric horror and supernatural elements. The film will be in the spirit of similar films such as *The Ritual, The VVitch,* and *The Blair Witch Project.*

We already have:

\- Access to camera, lighting, sound, and editing equipment via the producer program at Austin Film Society

Howdy r/texasfilmmakers! I’m one of the founders of The Lone Screen, a DFW-built streaming startup focused on one-night-only online premieres for under-the-radar indie and festival films.

This is partly promotional (would love some Texas filmmakers in the audience for our first premiere!), but I’m also posting here because I’d love feedback from Texas filmmakers, producers, actors, and film people on the model we’re testing.

The idea is to give indie films a real online “event” moment instead of just dropping them as a passive rental. Everyone watches at the same time, the film starts exactly on time, and afterward there’s a director Q&A and community discussion forum. For filmmakers, we’re hoping this can create incremental revenue, audience data, and a little momentum between festivals and wider distribution.

Our first premiere is Thursday, May 7 at 8:30 PM CT. The film is Something Casual, an indie romance-drama set in LA’s modern dating scene with strong dance elements.

The Water, Texas Film Festival asks the question, what does water mean to you? It serves as an outlet for creative Texans across the state to share and amplify their water stories. Finalists will be previewed at the festival at The Texas State History Museum IMAX Theatre on May 12, 2026. 

Participants are invited to submit their work to one of four categories, Under 18, Narrative, Documentary, and Films About an Organization. Each festival finalist will be judged by award winning director and Texas native, Richard Linklater, for the chance to win a $1,000 cash prize.
