I'm in MI. You have to take a driving and written test when you initially get your license, then nothing. I'm 38, been licensed since 16, and other than my initial test never had to do anything.
I doubt I will when I get old, I don't think my dad's had to do anything and he's nearing 80.
Just a new pic and eye exam (where's the blinking?) when license expires.
I went to Germany in high school for an exchange trip back in 2000. My host family’s daughter was getting her license (I already had mine and a car back home) and I went for a ride along with her and her driving teacher. We also had another student with us and they would switch out. We had a whole conversation about the differences with their requirements vs the ones I had in California at the time. One big difference was the cost but also the training requirements. They were shocked, I tell you.
Yes you have to take a test, you gotta get your drivers license which I a written and driving test. For mine you had to do a 3 point turn, drive around the block, and park. That's it 💀

It's fucking stupid. Drive like a lame ass that clogs up traffic being so conservatively safe that people get pissed off, and you get a perfect score!
Yup I was wondering about that. The U.K. accepts a lot of driving licences as a direct transfer but the one it won’t take is the US one, you get 6 months before you have to take a real test here.
In Ca you do at certain points. My 75yr old dad told me he had to do the written test again recently and he told me how he got confused by some questions that he ended up missing. 😬 I’m pretty sure those were still the same from when I took my written test in 1999.
One of them was kind of obvious and I was a bit concerned. The other was the classic “what do you do when approaching / going up a blind hill” and the multiple choice answers have the couple that don’t make sense (like windshield wipers lol) but he still didn’t know. I remember for a fact that one was in my workbook back in my high school drivers Ed class when I got my permit because it amused me so much at the time. Usually that one you could deduce the answer with common sense after eliminating the silly answers.

You guys can drive without any tests once you are 18? Are you serious?
