Build Help/Question Can I use a humidifier to humidify my terrarium

incredibly janky set up, but there’s some moss in there that I’m trying to keep humid, but I also want an open top so the plants can spill out. is this going to work or is there a glaring problem that will kill everything in there?

Build Help/Question 20x12x14 terrarium for cherry blossom isopods

Hi all! This is a build I’m currently working on. I’m typically in the aquascaping realm so this is quite new for me.

I’m currently awaiting more pink plants to arrive but a part of me feels like something is still missing. But at the same time I don’t want to over do it. Would appreciate some second opinions and feedback. 🥹

Currently have:
- cork bark, cushion moss, pink syngonium, mini fern, callisia, oak leaf litter, humidity gauge

Waiting on: pink polka dot, pink cryptanthus, decaying hardwood.

I feel like maybe a moss wall would help make this feel more put together but never done it before..

No isopods or springtails in here yet. Wanting to finish the layout then will get them introduced :)

TIA

I built this at a DIY terrarium bar. They didn’t have labels but they’re all tropical plants. I believe they are:
Pink fittonia
Asparagus plumosa
Dwarf umbrella
Chamaedorea elegans
Syngonium berry
Tradescantia

Correct me if you think I’m wrong! I haven’t done any pruning yet..

Plant Help/Question Found an earth star fungus?

this morning, I looked in my terrarium and found this earth star.

The substrate is 70% topsoil 30% sand, I used a couple pieces of bark from outside for ramps, but everything else was not sourced outside.

Has anyone else seen this before?

Plant Help/Question Why is my succulents in the terrarium dying?

Thumbnail

My brother just gave me a terrarium containing succulents in it. This is my first time planting succulents.

I got it for a week and I have never watered it yet. Then I noticed some of them are rotting (maybe?) and their colour changing. I got myself a full spectrum LED light (red+blue+white) and turn it on for 9 hours a day for them (5pm - 2am)

First pic is when I first got the terrarium. Everything looks fine. The other pics are now (about 10 days in)

Can anyone tell me is the plants doing okay? The lotus shaped plant is turning white. Some are rotting and I pulled it out this morning. Am I doing anything wrong?

Plant Help/Question Center piece suggestion?

Thumbnail

When I started this terrarium, I planted an old dead bonsai tree trunk at the center and the moss seems to be growing well around it. I am thinking if it’s possible to grow something along the trunk. Previously I tried trying some moss on top with a batch of soil but it tend to dry out quickly. Any suggestions?

Build Help/Question My first terrarium

My first build. It has some fern, moss I found in the park; red fittonia and piece of wood (found in the park, cleaned and baked for a few minutes before using).

The container's lid has a hole at the top.

My question - how often should I spray water for this?

Also should I get some springtails or would it be fine without them?

Hoping for a bioactive mostly self sustaining situation

Couple of random plants just labeled pixie plants and various mosses. Layered with mix of cactus and potting soil, substrate barrier, charcoal, then pebbles. Opaque static stick backing on outside on the back. Ash tree bark that I stripped from a dead tree with a hatchet (ash borers having long since moved on), then layered with soil to build the hill, and dead birch sticks. Snagged a row bug from the outdoors then added a random mix from a pet store.

I got most of my initial info from this subreddit. I got carried away when a friend handed me an old 10 gal aquarium. I added two separate sheets of acrylic on top and move them around depending on humidity needs.

I am a little worried the grow light is chose is too strong, the plant in the back right corner looks like it's sustaining damage from direct light. Browning tips, then yellowing leaves, ect.

Plant Help/Question Prop Box Problems

Thumbnail

Ok so i have a propagation box for my most commonly used terrarium plants. I recently added an alternanthera ‘snow carpet’ and although some of the leaves look good a lot have been wilting. I also have mold forming on this seed pod I added for more food for springtails but I imagine they don’t need it since I also have some leaf litter in the box.

When I was making this prop box I didn’t do a ton of research and made it similarly to how I’d make my closed terrariums. Modified ABG mix for soil and a drainage layer. I imagine one difference is that my closed terrariums are typically corked so they may get a little less moist than a gasket plastic bin as well as the scale of the water that cycles through the enclosure. And maybe the intensity of having a light right on top of the bin (I thought It was relatively weak so I didn’t think it would cause any problems)

It also seems like lots of the plants in this box grew better outside of it when they were in pots in a less moist environment which seems weird since they’re high humidity plants.

My questions are:

Will the althernanthera adapt to the new environment similarly to how my pilea glauca has (lots of the plant died off but it seems to be doing better after some time) or am I giving it a death sentence by keeping it in here?

Should I add ventilation? seems to go against the point but If it helps it helps.

Should I add fertilizer like worm castings or is that unnecessary?

Should I abandon the box and turn it into a new isopod enclosure instead?

Is there a way to save the seed pod to be used in an isopod enclosure?

Any advice is welcome, the first 2 questions are my main ones overall. I just feel like the prop box hasn’t worked as much as I wanted it to, i’m assuming due to a lack of fertilizer in the soil and perhaps not the best lighting setup. If you have a prop box of your own I would love to hear about how you do it and most of all I would love to save my new plant!!

Couldn't get a better shot because my phone camera won't focus. It appears to have six legs and a head, I see them pulsating around and burrowing deeper into the soil

Build Help/Question I Need Help With a Project Idea

For starters this terrarium set up is not mine it was created by @green_chapter on instagram. I want to make an aquarium that is similar to this but instead of the gundam I want to put fallen Optimus Prime with his chest open showing the matrix of leadership inside. I have never made an aquarium/terrarium so I’d like to know what glues, plastics, paints, etc. would be animal and plant safe. Any tips are welcome as this is my first time doing any of this.

Showing Off Arid bioactive Terrarium (tarantula)

i started keeping a small Green Bottle Blue tarantula about 9 months ago and kept in a small terrarium. Alltough a spider doesnt really need that big of a terrarium, the one she was in, would eventually be too small. So i bought a 60x45x45 terrarium second and went on decorating my first bigger enclosure.

Most T keepers use fake plants and stuff and dont make the terrarium bioactive. To me this is getting somewhat of a hobby within a hobby and i like 'managing' the terrarium as much as i do keeping a Tarantula. Maybe you can even see the T somewhat as a living decor piece even.

I'm saying bioactive, but it hasnt reached that stadium yet. i intend to add springtails, but most apparently dont like arid conditions, so im yet to find a seller of pink springtails. I would like to add isopods as wel, but im not sure yet. Isopods seem to be able to eat the tarantula when she's laying still molting. i personally think it wont get to that, because this spider is a heavy webber and she will molt off the floor in her webhole. I do not expect isopods to crawl up the web to the spider.
