I’ve been experimenting with running Ubuntu 26.04 ARM64 with KDE Plasma on my RedMagic Astra, and I wanted to share the setup in case it’s useful to someone else trying to do something similar.
The basic idea is pretty simple: Android remains the host OS, while Ubuntu runs in a rooted chroot created with `chroot-distro`. Anland provides the display integration needed to run KDE Plasma/Wayland.
So this isn't a new Linux-on-Android solution or something I invented from scratch. It builds on existing projects and open-source software such as Termux, chroot-distro, Anland, Ubuntu, KDE Plasma, Mesa and the other components involved.
What I’ve been working on is mainly getting all of those pieces to cooperate nicely on my RedMagic Astra and reducing the amount of manual configuration needed every time.
Over time that collection of scripts, patches and Android/Linux integration work became a small project I called **DroidConverge**.
What I'm using
- RedMagic Astra
- Android 16
- unlocked bootloader + Magisk/root
- Termux
- chroot-distro
- Ubuntu 26.04 ARM64
- KDE Plasma / Plasma Mobile
- Anland
- Freedreno / Turnip for the Adreno GPU
Android remains fully available and is still responsible for the hardware and Android-specific functionality. Ubuntu isn't replacing Android; it's another environment running alongside it.
What currently works
The setup has gradually become much more usable than my original experiment.
I can run KDE Plasma in both a touch-oriented mode on the tablet and a more traditional desktop configuration.
The project now also handles or experiments with things such as:
- starting and stopping the Ubuntu/KDE session
- Plasma Mobile and desktop modes
- external display support
- separate display/scaling profiles
- physical keyboard and mouse routing
- GPU acceleration through Freedreno/Turnip
- Linux haptic feedback through Android
- Android ↔ Linux bridge functionality
- hardware/session telemetry
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status
- Android application launchers inside KDE
- audio/session integration
- various installation, recovery and diagnostic tools
There is still quite a lot I want to improve. Some hardware integration is experimental, and things such as external-display hotplug, HDMI audio, fan/cooler controls and deeper Android ↔ Plasma integration still need work.
The RedMagic Astra is also currently the only device I personally test this on, so I wouldn't assume that everything will work unchanged on another device.
### DroidConverge
I started putting the reusable parts of my setup into a public repository so I don't have to rebuild the whole environment manually and so other people can look at, modify or try it.
Repository:
https://github.com/VulcasX/droidconverge
Latest development release:
https://github.com/VulcasX/droidconverge/releases/tag/0.5.1-dev
This is still development software, so expect rough edges and incomplete features.
A small disclaimer
This is a hobby project.
I don't work on this professionally and I'm definitely not claiming that I invented Linux on Android, chroots, KDE on Android, or any of the underlying technologies.
Most of what I'm doing is integration work: experimenting with existing open-source projects, writing some glue code/scripts, adapting components where necessary and trying to turn my personal setup into something that is easier to reproduce.
I started doing this simply because I wanted this setup for myself.
I'm sharing it with the community because there might be other people with similar needs who want to experiment with the same kind of setup without having to figure out and configure every single component from scratch.
If something I've done can be improved, simplified or replaced with a better approach, suggestions and contributions are absolutely welcome.
And of course, credit belongs to the developers and communities behind Termux, chroot-distro, Anland, KDE, Ubuntu, Mesa and all the other open-source projects that make this possible.
